Anneliese Michel’s Original Diagnosis

After the second expedition, Anneliese visited a neurologist who diagnosed her with temporal lobe epilepsy, a disease that causes seizures, memory loss, and visual and auditory hallucinations.

Temporal lobe epilepsy can also cause Geschwind syndrome, a disorder marked by extreme religiosity.

Anneliese began taking medication for her epilepsy following her diagnosis and enrolled at the University of Würzburg in 1973.

However, the drugs given to her did not help her, and as the year progressed, her condition began to worsen. Although Anneliese was still taking her meds, she began to believe she was possessed by a demon and needed to find a solution other than medicine.

She began to see the face of the devil wherever she went, and she said she heard the demons whisper in her ears. When she heard demons say she was “cursed” and “rotten in hell” while she was praying, she concluded that the devil must have her.

Strange Behavior of Girl “Taken by a Demon”

Anneliese sought priests to help her with her demonic possession, but all the clergy she approached refused their request, saying she needed medical attention and still needed a bishop’s permission.

At this point Anneliese’s delusions had become extreme.

Believing she was possessed, She ripped off her clothes, did up to 400 squats a day, crawled under a table for two days, and barked like a dog.

She also ate spiders and coal, bit off the head of a dead bird, and licked her own urine from the ground.

Eventually, she and her mother found a priest, Ernst Alt, who believed she had him. In later court documents, she stated that she “doesn’t appear to be epileptic.”
