Legia Warszawa players open the 2023/24 Conference League with a home match against Aston Villa on Thursday. Legia eliminated Danish club Midtjylland in the final qualifying round on penalties. However, Birmingham easily handled Scottish side Hibernian, winning on aggregate 8-0.

In the English Premier League, Aston Villa suffered heavy defeats against Newcastle United (1:5) and Liverpool (0:3), but easily defeated theoretically weaker teams – Everton 4:0, Burnley 3:1 and Crystal Palace 3:1.
The Villans’ recent progress is largely down to coach Unai Emery, who was appointed in October last year. The 51-year-old Spanish coach is a true specialist in playing in European cups. He led Sevilla to win the Europa League for three consecutive years (2014-16).
However, it is difficult to predict how seriously the English will take playing in the Conference League. The tough competition in the Premier League often leads to the use of substitutes in the cups. It is certain that Argentine world champion Emiliano Martinez will not guard Aston Villa’s goal.
Aston Villa previously played in the European Cups in 2010, when they lost to Rapid Vienna in the final round of the Europa League qualifiers.
In the fifth group, in addition to Legia and Aston Villa, there are also Dutch AZ Alkmaar and Bosnian Zrinjski Mostar.
The Conference League is UEFA’s third-ranking competition in terms of prestige and financial rewards, after the Champions League and Europa League.
There will be 32 teams in the group stage, divided into eight groups. The winners will qualify directly to the 1/8 Finals, and the second-placed teams will meet in a play-off – on February 15 and 22 – with the eight clubs that will finish third in the Europa League groups.
The final will be held on May 29, 2024 in Athens – at AEK Stadium.
The winner of the competition will earn the right to play in the group stage of the Europa League next season.
