Over and over we keep hearing rumors of Robin appearing in the final chapter of Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight franchise. This despite the fact that Mr Nolan has said on many occassions that ROBIN will not appear in his films. Some feel that the time line is right to introduce Robin and with the casting of Joseph Gordon-Levitt it is inevitable that Robin will appear but I for one am dead against it.
WILX has pushed the Robin rumors to the forefront again with reports that the production team are scouting for a location to base Robin’s hideout out of stating;
“They looked at the Ledges as well as a water treatment plant located inside the park. Sources say the area is being considered as a hideout for Batman sidekick Robin.”
My feeling is this. There will be no Robin just as Christopher Nolan has said repeatedly. How do you possibly fit a teen sidekick into a movie with such heavy and dark over tones? You cant and frankly you wouldnt want to for fear of downplaying the great performances that have come before, ala Heath Ledger as Joker may he Rest in Peace!
I think we will see a new character introduced who may or may not be a sidekick as much as a new Dark Knight of Gotham which will also open things up for Warner Brothers to do as the X-Men Movie franchise has and begin its own new origins time line for Dark Knight. My Money is on Joseph Gordon Levitt playing Night Wing!
Nightwing is a far more interesting character because it plays well into the dark vision that Christopher Nolan has bought to the franchise. Little bit of potential spoiler talk here. In the Dark Knight Bruce Wayne’s one true love is killed by the Joker and in the end he is wanted and on the run from the police. Bruce Wayne clearly wants to hang up the mantle and after becoming wanted its a chance for Christopher Nolan to take things to new darker levels as Batman seeks out revenge and inadvertently his own destruction as he goes from hero to wanted criminal.
Christopher Nolan could segway into the 2009 Nightwing comics by killing Batman at the end of The Dark Knight rises and have Nightwing take over the mantle. This would be a fantastic opportunity for Warner Brothers to continue the franchise with a new director and make mountains of cash with a Nightwing origins story. The 1996 to 2009 comic book Nightwing has plenty of source material and with the correct director and writing team, like Kevin Smith for example, it could turn into a fantastic new film franchise. There is a huge catch here of course in assuming that DC Comics would be ok with Christopher Nolan killing off one of their most treasured heroes even knowing that Warner Brothers will reboot Batman a few years from now anyways with a new director.
Lets be honest do any fans really want to see Robin? Do you really want to see a spin off Robin movie? Heck no. Would you like to see a bad ass Nightwing side kick spun off into its own origins story? Absolutely! What do you think of all the Robin talk will Christopher Nolan put him in or stay true to his word?
