At the WTA Finals in Cancun, it’s time for the semifinals. Bad weather delayed the start of the matches. Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula began their battle for the final after midnight Polish time. The young American was helpless and lost 2:6, 1:6.
As usual, tennis players were disturbed by the annoying wind. Pegula started the match better and scored a break on the final comeback. Goff chased down and leveled the score from 0-2 to 2-2. However, she played very unevenly and a missed shot cost her another serve loss. Pegula was more solid on the court and had better control of her movements.
Gauff struggled with her game. In the seventh game, she showed some good performance and saved the first break point with a wonderful backhand. However, it didn’t help her, as she finally returned her serve by throwing a forehand. In the eighth game, Pegula won four set points from 0-30 and ended with a winner.

Surprisingly, the first group was not interrupted by rain even for a moment. But what is delayed will not escape. Frustrated, Gove returned her request to open the second set. After a while, the unfavorable weather made itself felt. The tennis players remained on the court and the wind was so strong that the umbrella over Gauff’s head broke. The break lasted just over 10 minutes.
The young American seemed resigned to her fate. The game was not going well for her at all. A double fault and a missed forehand winner saw her serve again in the fifth game. After a while, we were reminded that the rain is the hallmark of the event in Cancun, along with the wind of course.
Another short break did not break Pegula’s rhythm. She blocked a break and increased the score to 5:1. Gauff was unable to make a move. In the seventh game, Ball saved the first match with a winner, but in the second game she threw a forehand.
The meeting lasted exactly one hour. Pegula scored 21 of 27 points on her first serve. It was broken once, and six out of 10 break points were used. She served 10 final shots with 10 unforced errors. Gauff had nine straight wins and made 22 errors.
Pegula raised his match tally with Gauff to 3-1. The young American won her first Grand Slam singles title in September at the US Open. Pegula has advanced to the quarterfinals six times in major events.
In Cancun, Pegula is unfazed by the conditions. She did not drop even a set in four matches and advanced to her tenth singles final on the WTA Tour. She will have a chance to capture her fifth title. The biggest tournaments she won were in Guadalajara (2022) and Montreal (2023). He is playing in the WTA Finals for the second time. A year ago in Fort Worth, he lost all three matches in the group. Gauff also did not win in her debut last season.
In Sunday’s final, Pegula’s opponent will be either Iga Svetek or Aryna Sabalenka.
