Did you know? Every time David Cronenberg directs a new movie an angel gets its wings. Ol’ Davey himself must have found out, because while A Dangerous Method (it’s like The Prestige but with early psychiatry instead of stage magic!) is in post-production the master of body horror is already setting up a new film, an adaptation of Don DeLillio’s novel Cosmopolis. The Playlist reports that Paul Giamatti is in talks to act in it.
Cosmopolis will already star Colin Farrell and Marion Cotillard as a newlywed couple. Farrell will be a billionaire who goes on a Ulysses-like odyssey and experience stalkers, attacks and other misfortunes during the course of the day. The Playlist supposes that Giamatti will play one of the people out to torment Colin Farrell.
I’m excited for this, partially because the concept reminds me of Martin Scorsese’s underrated After Hours (what a great urban odyssey). Cronenberg is writing the script for Cosmopolis himself, which is what excites me most about the project. Guy hasn’t directed a script of his own since eXistenZ, and that was all the way back in 1999.
