Emma Stone Officially Cast As Gwen Stacy In “Spider-Man”? Insert Spit Take Here

The rumors kicked up a few days ago regarding Emma Stone being cast in the “Spider-Man” and everyone, quite naturally assumed it would be for the role of Mary Jane Watson. This makes perfect sense as Mary Jane is a cute, sassy redhead and Emma Stone fits that bill swimmingly. We can set aside all rumor as Columbia made it official and announced that Emma Stone will be joining the cast of director Marc Webb’s reboot and she’ll be playing…Gwen Stacy.

Yes, you read that correctly. The redheaded Emma Stone will be playing the very blond and very destined for bad news Gwen Stacy. If you are familiar at all with the classic storyline of the “Spider-Man” comics, you know exactly what I’m talking about. While I am excited to see Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker and see what the very clever director Webb is going to do here, this piece of news is a huge head scratcher. It makes about as much sense as casting a blond to play the redheaded Mary Jane. Hm? Oh, they did that already? Right.

So I’m speechless. It’s a great get for the movie since Emma Stone is a very talented, up and coming actress, but it just stinks of horrible casting. It just goes to show you that the studios (cough Fox cough) making the movies about Marvel Comics characters are completely oblivious to fan reaction, whereas the actual Marvel Studio movies seem to knock it out of the park every time.

I am a big fan of Emma Stone from Zombieland. GREAT choice and she is an up and comer so it wont break the bank either!

This franchise is hungry for greatness. This is the time to rebuild the franchise. They should utilise the villains that weren’t included in the previous films such as Beetle (Abner Jenkins), Carnage, Chameleon, Electro, Enforcers, Hammerhead, Hobgoblin, Hydro-Man, Jackal, Kingpin, Kraven the Hunter, Lizard, Morbius, Mysterio, Rhino, Scorpion, Shocker, Silvermane, Spot, Tinkerer, Tombstone, Vulture.
Mary-Jane Watson has been a love interest in every Spider-Man film. That must change. They should include the following love interests and leave Mary-Jane Watson out of the films for at least a while:
Liz Allan, Betty Brant, Gwen Stacy, Debra Whitman, April Maye, Michele Gonzales, Jean DeWolff, Jessica Drew, Lisa Skye, Marcy Kane, Angelica Jones, Felicia Hardy, Sarah Rushman, Carlie Cooper, Norah Winters.
This is a second chance to get it right. This is an opportunity.

  3. Wow, as Gwen Stacy? random. I’m very surprised with this one, and very unsure about this whole reboot still. I don’t think there’s anything that can make me be interested at this point.
