War in Ukraine. The United States will supply Ukraine with long-range ATACMS missiles

US President Joe Biden has informed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that Washington will supply long-range ATACMS missiles to Kiev, NBC News reported on Friday, citing three US officials.

The anonymous sources cited by NBC News did not say when the ATACMS missiles would be delivered to Ukraine or when an official announcement would be made in this regard.

ABC News reported similar information a week ago, adding that these missiles were likely to be included in the latest US military aid package to Ukraine. However, Kiev’s new weapons suite announced on Thursday did not include the ATACMS system, although the White House stressed that the matter “is still on the table” and a final decision has not yet been made.

Biden said last fall that he did not want the Ukrainians to be able to use it against targets in Russia. The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Mark Milley, explained that the United States possesses very few of these missiles. However, there has been a change in approach this summer. Biden said in July at the conclusion of the NATO summit in Vilnius that he was considering giving these weapons to Ukraine.

ATACMS missiles

ATACMS (Army Tactical Missile Systems) are ballistic missiles launched from HIMARS and M270 MLRS rocket artillery launchers with a range of up to 300 km. Kiev insists that currently available weapons are incapable of destroying the logistical centers of Russian forces on Ukrainian territory. ATACMS missiles will allow, among other things, more precise attacks on targets located in the Crimean Peninsula, which Russia has annexed, CNN previously assessed.

Since the spring, the Ukrainian Armed Forces have possessed missiles with similar range and destructive power in the form of the British Storm Shadow air-to-surface missiles and their French counterpart SCALP. However, they are launched from Ukrainian aircraft.
