“Lara is incredibly talented and committed to everything MAGA (Make America Great Again) stands for. She told me she wanted to take on this challenge,” Trump said in a statement.
Lara, 41, is the wife of Donald Trump's son, Eric. Previously, she was a television producer and appeared, among others, as a political commentator on the American television station Fox News.
Trump proposed his close ally Michael Whatley, chairman of the North Carolina Republican Party, to be the party's second co-chair. Whatley supported Trump in 2020, claiming, among other things, that his presidential victory was “stolen from him through massive fraud.” Shortly after the 2020 election, Trump attempted to overturn the election results. To this day, he does not acknowledge his defeat against the incumbent Democrat, Joe Biden.
Who will lead the Republicans?
American media reported earlier this month that the current head of the Republican Party, Ronna McDaniel, intends to step down after the primary elections in South Carolina, which will be held on February 24.
If that happens, the party will have to quickly call new elections. Trump is currently the leading Republican candidate in the presidential election, so his proposals for the position of party leader will be of great importance. Trump's daughter-in-law may lead one of the world's largest political parties.
The Republican Party holds a convention in which delegates formally elect a candidate for party president. McDaniel has served as president since 2017.
