The Court of Appeal rejected the appeal of Jeronimo Martins Polska, owner of the Biedronka chain, and upheld the fine imposed by the Head of the Competition and Consumer Protection Bureau in the amount of over PLN 60 million for incorrect labeling of products on shelves. Biedronka stresses that it informs customers “consistently and reliably” about the country of origin of fruits and vegetables, and that errors are “sporadic” and “temporary.”

“The Court of Appeal rejected the appeal submitted by Jeronimo Martins Polska, the owner of the Bedronka chain,” the Competition and Consumer Protection Office reported on Friday on the X website.

“The decision of the Head of the Office of Competition and Consumer Protection is final (DOZIK 3/2021). The court upheld the fine imposed by the Head of the Office of Competition and Consumer Protection – more than PLN 60 million (60,096,307 PLN – Ed.)” – it was emphasized.

Punishment for Biedronka shopkeeper

This relates to the fine imposed by the head of the Office of Competition and Consumer Protection in 2021. According to the office, the owner of the “Bedronka” chain misled consumers regarding the country of origin of fruits and vegetables, which could have distorted their purchasing decisions.

Violations were subsequently reported in more than a quarter (27.8%) of the Biedronka stores inspected by the Commercial Inspectorate.
