Just on Tuesday, Iga Świątek met her first opponent in the WTA 1000 competition on hard courts in Cincinnati. The American, who just met her in Montreal, will stand in the way of the WTA rating leader.
Because of getting a single number, Iga Świątek received a free ticket at the start. After Friday’s draw, her opponent would almost certainly be Danielle Collins (WTA 34) or Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (WTA 100). The American with a wild card won the Russian 6: 3, 6: 1 on Tuesday and will stand in the way of the Polish woman.
Swiatek has nothing to fear. Last week, Collins managed to take her block in the quarterfinals of a WTA 1000 event in Montreal. Then our tennis player won 6: 3, 4: 6, 6: 2. In total, the Polish woman has a balance of 3-1 with the American on professional courts. She has only lost once, in the semi-finals of the 2022 Australian Open.
Collins has been on the mend lately. In the duel with Pavlyuchenkova, she managed to catch six breaks, and she herself lost serve twice. In the first set, the ladies played in waves. First, the US delegate won four games. Then the Russian won 3 matches and almost returned to the match. But the end belonged to the Americans.
However, in the second set, the tennis player presented herself to the hosts perfectly. She won a break in the first and fifth games and completely controlled the situation on the court. Already in the seventh inning, she taught the match balls and the second time she capped the 78-minute game.
Schwietek and Collins will face each other on Wednesday. The exact time for the duel will be announced after the full schedule of games for the day of the 2023 Western & Southern Open is released.
