State Commissioner of the Central Communications Port (CPK), Maciej Lasek, suggested in an interview with “Rzeczpospolita” on Monday that further operation of Chopin Airport has no meaning if an airport is built in Barano. Lasek also announced the creation of “new communications solutions for Poland”, which would require adjustments to the PiS government's plans.
Also on Monday, Polish Airports announced that before the CPK is built, Chopin Airport will be expanded, and the works, which will cost PLN 2 billion, are scheduled to be completed in 2029. After that the airport will be ready to handle 30 million passengers per year. However, as shown, the real opening date of CPK is 2032-2035.
Internet storm regarding CPK. “Infrastructure coup”
A real storm broke out on the Internet.
Maciej Wilke, former vice president of Polish airline LOT and current president of the Yes for CPK association, wrote about the “infrastructural coup” on the X website. He said in his blog post, “The presented plan is doomed to failure and effectively eliminates the project of the Kurdistan Communist Party.”
According to Left Party co-chair Robert Biedron, “the Kurdistan Communist Party should be the government’s priority.”
The former president of Polish Airlines LOT, Sebastian Mikuš, also spoke in favor of building the CPK.
Strong criticism of the new government came from opposition politicians. Former Prime Minister Beata Szydlo stated that “The CPK project has been officially buried. The same will happen with all other investments that serve Poland's development. Tusk is not there to develop Poland. He is there for Poland's collapse.”
The former commissioner of the Kurdistan Communist Party during the PiS government, Marcin Horawa, explained in a recording published on the X website why, in his opinion, it was ridiculous to develop Chopin Airport at the expense of the Kurdistan Communist Party.
Maciej Lasek: I don't see any reason for hysteria
— Perhaps all those who put in our mouths the phrase that we wanted to plow this project because they wanted to distinguish themselves from us in this way adopted this method of work. It seems to me that this message was really simple and you just need to read it carefully – said Maciej Lasek in an interview with Money.pl, commenting on the storm caused by information about the expansion of Chopin Airport.
He also confirmed that a central communications port is being built, which he also said in an interview with Onet.
He stressed that work is still continuing. He said: “I do not see any reason for such hysteria, except that some believe otherwise.”
PPL: Chopin Airport will be expanded. The CPK will start operating in 2035.
PPL announced on Monday the decision to expand Warsaw Chopin Airport to a capacity of around 30 million passengers per year in 2029.
As announced at the meeting, Polish airports plan to start construction work in 2026, and the investment will be fully operational in the summer season of 2029. After the expansion, the airport's capacity is expected to reach about 30 million passengers per year. The calculations also show that the investment will be fully amortized in 2035, when an additional profit of PLN 900,000 will be generated. Zloty. It was added that the modernization of Chopin Airport will include, among other things: an opportunity to develop traditional carriers such as LOT.
PPL has also announced the realistic date on which it will commence operations Central Port of Communications, the date is 2035. They estimated that the date given by previous authorities (2028) was “just wishful thinking.”
— We have to start today so that in 2029 we can say we have completed the investment. “By 2034/2035, we are able to provide the necessary capacity in Mazovia so that all traffic from Chopin Airport is transferred to the new central airport,” said Maciej Lasek, Deputy Minister of MFiPR, State Commissioner of CPK, in a conversation with journalists. He also stated that without the Chopin Airport expansion, Warsaw would lose 42 million passengers by 2032 and 80 million passengers by 2035.
Lasek also admitted that the government plans to expand Warsaw-Modlin Masovian Airport and will make efforts to maintain traffic at Warsaw-Radom Airport.
“We have plans to expand Modlin Airport to accommodate 10 million passengers with good terminal infrastructure. In addition, Modlin will soon have a railway connection and very good accessibility via a three-lane standard S road, so it will be a great addition to today’s Chopin Airport,” said Lasek. “And in the future for the new central airport in Barano,” he added, “We will try to do everything we can to encourage as many airlines or tour operators as possible to use this airport,” referring to Radom Airport, which opened a year ago.
