The plane, carrying 139 passengers and six crew members, took off from San Francisco. The destination airport was Rogue Valley International Airport in Medford, Oregon. The absence of one of the skin panels was only noticed during a routine technical inspection after the flight. The machine has been in operation since 1998.

NBC quoted a statement issued by United Airlines as saying: “We will conduct a comprehensive inspection of the plane and make all necessary repairs before it returns to service.” The airline announced an investigation to find out the cause of the damage. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are also investigating the crash.
