Novak Djokovic gave Bernabe Zapata six games and advanced to the last 16 of the US Open Grand Slam 2023. Wimbledon star Christopher Eubanks and surprise hit Roberto Carballes were eliminated in the first round.

He lost five matches in the first match and six in the second. Novak Djokovic registered another emphatic win at the US Open 2023. On Wednesday, the second-seeded Serb beat Bernabé Zapata 6-4, 6-1, 6-1 in 120 minutes.

Djokovic struggled only a little in the first set, when the ambitious fighter and big mover Zapata managed to hang on in the exchanges. Since the second set, the Serb’s dominance was no longer a matter of discussion, and the tennis player from Belgrade entered the third round with a smile on his face.

“Even though I’m 36 years old, I’m still hungry to show my best tennis on this court,” Djokovic, who served five aces on Wednesday and converted six of 11 break points, revealed in a post-match interview.

The Serbian’s next opponent, on his way to winning his 24th Grand Slam title, and his fourth in New York, will be his compatriot Laslo Djere, the 32nd tournament. He faced him last year in Belgrade and won 2-6, 7-6 (6), 7-6 (4).

Number 28 Christopher Eubanks was eliminated. The American, who was a recent Wimbledon discovery, lost 6-7 (6), 6-2, 2-6, 6-7 (7) to cardholder Benjamin Ponzi. In his first appearance in the third round of the US Open, he will face French qualifier Dominique Stricker.

Roberto Carballes did not follow up after eliminating fourth seed Holger Rönn and was eliminated from the tournament in the 1/32 finals. On Wednesday, the Spaniard was broken five times, and in four sets he failed to reach Aslan Karachev, who showed a very aggressive attitude (83 finishes and 54 unforced errors).
