10 Must See Horror Films From The Last 10 Years
There are a plethora of great horror films that have made their debut over the last few centuries and we could easily list fifty great horror films you should definitely see. The object of this editorial is to put focus on 10 great horror films that have come out in the last ten years that are worthy of seeing. All of these are available for rent, most of them are on Netflix on demand and certainly your local video store and or amazon will have them for sale. In absolutely no particular order here are 10 Great New Horror Films Everyone Should See.#1 Let Me In / Let The Right One In
It’s a bit odd listing both I admit but for me they both are quite good with their own merits. The original is vicious, intense and a truly fantastic take on the vampire genre with a strong mix of human interest and pre teen love.
The remake by Matt Reeves is pretty close to a scene by scene remake but also offers enough new aspects to make it a worthy remake and a film that can stand on its own.
#2 The Descent
Neil Marshall is nothing short of a genius and in my view is one of the best story tellers of our time when it comes to horror. From monster movies to apocalyptic stories of mankind`s destruction he really has done it all. If you love horror and have not seen all of Neil Marshall’s films then I think we may have to confiscate your membership card to the ‘All Things Scary Club’. ( That also means you cannot use our secret handshake anymore.)
In all seriousness The Descent much like Doomsday gives us once again a strong female lead who with a group of friends descends into a dark cave system to discover a hybrid life form that is vicious, gruesome and even worse hungry. Filled with intensity and real scares it will be especially creepy for those of you who like me do not fare well in tight spaces.
The sequel The Descent Part 2 is also a fantastic film and frankly if you loved the first one you will love the sequel just as much.
#3 [REC]
I did not get to checkout the spanish film REC until just a few weeks ago when it finally arrived on Netflix on Demand in Canada. I saw the Hollywood remake Quarantine which starred Jennifer Carpenter first since it was more widely available. As much as I enjoyed Quarantine true to form the original is ten times better.
The film follows a Spanish news crew who are shooting a show and tagging along with a local fire team who respond to a simple call and suddenly find themselves under quarantine in a small apartment building as an outbreak runs head long through the building.
REC is a fantastic film and a testament to Spanish film making.
#4 Trick R Treat
What can I say about Trick R Treat other than to say its the greatest horror anthology since Creepshow. Trick R Treat is an anthology of different stories that all evolve around Halloween and as you discover also have a common link back to each other.
Trick R Treat is a must see horror film for true blue horror fans of all ages and backgrounds.Whether you like classic horror or modern horror you will truly appreciate this anthology of stories that takes place on Halloween and carries the theme of you guessed it Trick R Treat.
The fact that this film went direct to DVD with very little fanfare is a shame since it is without a doubt one of the Top 10 horror films of all time.
#5 Martyrs
Martyrs is one of the most complex films I have ever seen. This french horror film has a truly moving story and a script that jumps off the page and draws you in. Intense, disturbing and powerful Martyrs is not only one of the most well crafted french horror films ever made its also the most violent and disturbing.
Martyrs is the first film that made my stomach turn and made me hit fast forward but also in the same token kept me glued to my seat to see what happens next. Many speak of A Serbian Film as being the most disturbing film they have ever seen but for me Martyrs is. It is also one of the best written and well thought out horror films of the last 10 years.
A true testament to how a fantastic screenplay can take a film that would otherwise be defined as torture porn and make it much more.
#6 Dead Girl:
While we are talking about disturbing movies we might as well get the second one out-of-the-way. Dead Girl although not as thought-provoking as Martyrs is still very much a disturbing affair and asks the moral question, if nobody knows that you are doing it, would you do it?
We watch as a group of boys spiral into darkness when they find a woman tied to a table in an old abandoned hospital.
Dead Girl is highly disturbing and not for the faint of heart but also a film that will make you think and question the moral compass and what truly makes us do the right thing.
Very often people will ask me what is a movie you recommend that is truly terrifying. I always hesitate to recommend this movie because it truly is horrifying.
#7 Zombieland:
I am not sure I can think of a single thing bad to say about Zombieland. It is one of the 10 best horror comedies of all time and is a testament to how talented filmmakers with a true passion for a subject can really make a movie shine.
Zombieland is the funniest zombie buddy comedy flick since Shaun of the Dead. Packed with laughs, hilarious antics, 32 outrageous rules, a fantastic cameo and yes… lots and lots of zombies.
Zombieland is a must see for fans of Shaun of the Dead and frankly anyone who loves a good zombie movie
#8 Dawn of the Dead
George Romero’s Dawn of the Dead is a classic and one that us die-hard fans hold in extremely high esteem. George Romero to this day is the face of zombie movies and is the reason that AMC`s Walking Dead exists today. He not only defined the genre but led many other talented people including Robert Kirkman to make their own zombie projects.
When it was announced that Universal was going to be remaking it I was extremely hesitant but once the film was cast with names like Sarah Polley and Zack Snyder was put in place to direct I started to perk up.
The remake of Dawn of the Dead is similar in the fact it takes place in a mall but otherwise Zack has taken a classic and made it his own while still paying homage to the original.
#9 SAW
SAW has spawned an entire franchise of crappy sequels and each one reminds me how awesome the original movie was and how desperately I want more. Ok so in fairness they were not all crap but fortunately after the last SAW 3D they have decided to stop making more movies before it becomes Jigsaw vs Freddy or better yet Jigsaw in Space.
From the opening scenes to the closing moments SAW grabs you by the jugular and never lets go.
SAW was created on a shoestring budget and turned into one of the biggest horror films of the last 10 years. Based on a fantastic concept of a serial killer teaching his victims lessons it was packed full of thrills and an ending that still makes me smile to this day.
#10 28 Days Later
28 Days Later spawns the debate is it a zombie movie or is it not a zombie movie? Similar to The walking Dead in that they both share an identical starting point it’s about a man who wakes from a coma in the hospital to find the world overrun by the infected. Fast moving with a zombie like hunger for flesh 28 Days Later is a truly creepy horror film and a fantastic tale of infectious destruction.
Directed by Danny Boyle and starring Cillian Murphy I have seen this film no less than 20 times and watched the sequel 28 Weeks Later no less than a dozen times. I cant wait for 28 Months Later to start being more than just producers talking!
Now that you have read my 10 best horror films from the last 10 yeas share with me what yours are. I know .. I know its fun to troll me and highlight how much better your writing is then mine but just for once lets see if we can get some productive comments on some great films that people should watch that did not make my list.
At last a digestible horror list.
A.M.
grotesque watch that if u like sick movies be warned not for the faint hearted
grotesque wasnt even a good extreme film, it had one of the worst endings i have ever seen, if your looking for sick horror movies just stick to martyrs, inside, in my skin, or high tension they at least have something good to offer unlike grotesque
Insidious was awesome and original
Insidious? Really? That was laughable at best. Not something I would put on the genre of horror.
It started out good but the ending sucked!!
despite being badly acted it was decent because it was original. finally a writer decided to break away from the traditional and silly christian views of heaven and hell and instead worked in the more abstract (yet oddly somewhat more believable) idea of astral projection and the astral planes. but when Tiptoe Through the Tulips started playing, i busted up laughing and that did kind of kill the horror part of it for me.
Silly Christian views? Don’t say shit about people’s religion thank you very much!
Christians don’t say shit
Silly Christian, Do you REALLY think two of every animal was on a boat for forty years and not one of them killed another? Despite the fact that most of them eat each other? I love Christians, they give me something to laugh about
Shane i will do you JUSTICE by letting you know that all religions have tales and stories that give us information on how to live our lives as good people, things we should not do, etc. Most of these stories are usually very fictionalized for many different purposes, mainly to make the lessons epic so we dont forget them. YOU are the one that takes them literally, which makes YOU ignorant. I am speaking on behalf of no religion, i am stating the facts. Though i respect many opinions, i do not respect yours because it is completely illogical, but good try.
oh a debate on religion,.. Hello internet… Who cares? Live your lives, respect one another and believe in yourselves and the others around you. God can’t tell you that, oh wait “god” hasn’t actually made an appearance yet so put down your silly little brainwashing bibles/books/stories and how about you write a book on your experiences not worshipping someone elses. Do you think in 2000 years Harry Potter will be the new jesus? Place your bets now..
If they forgot morality and only reason they are moral is from a fairy tale, then that makes them idiots. No, Shane probably doesn’t take them literally and you are not stating facts, nor was Shane illogical in any form.
Your response is idiotic. I’m well aware that all religions have tales and stories, which is why they’re all bullshit. I don’t have a desire to enter a religious debate, just the desire to let you know that what you wrote was idiotic, but good try
Before you judge another religion, please do your history. The Bible says in Genesis 7:24; That they were in the ark for 150 days while it rained. Then in chapter 8 it says they were in the ark for another 150 days while the water receded. And then Noah waited for the ark to rest on land, after that he even waited longer before he left the ark. But if you add all the days he spent in the ark up (aka doing your research) you would see that Noah was in the ark for one year and ten days. So about 375 days, that is much less than 40 years. I mean no offence by correcting you, I just don’t want you believing a lie that you have been told.
That was a typo.
How did you come up with 375 days? I mean you gave no specific time for how much longer Noah spent in the Ark. You gave specifics of how long they (meaning animals and Noah’s family) were initially on the Ark, which totaled 300 days. Since you did not mention that the animals stayed on the Ark longer I can only presume that they were freed after 300 days. So how did you come to the conclusion that Noah stayed on the Ark for an additional 75 days? That’s an additional 3 and a half months. That’s a long time to stay cooped up in a likely stinky, probably very worn boat, when you have the ability to get out and be on land after being on water for such an extended period of time. Where is the logic in that?

How did you come up with 375 days? I mean you gave no specific time for how much longer Noah spent in the Ark. You gave specifics of how long they (meaning animals and Noah’s family) were initially on the Ark, which totaled 300 days. shhh
garbage. Way to go over budget and then just make up some bullshit for the third act.
i completely agree with you, it had some creepy moments(family woth doll faces) and some cheap scares, but i loved it! the only thing i didnt like was the design of the demon or whatever it was, it could have been a lot better…
I watcht grotesque its a sick movie but there are sicker movies
as: august underground triologie
a serbian film
slow torture puke chamber
regionatet sacrafise
and a philosophy of a knife
i agree…i’ve seen most of those…guess i’ll try out Dead Girl…it looks dumb…but this person obviously knows good horror. Knock Knock was a good teen gore scream, and the first Hills Have Eyes
Have you watched DeadGirl now??? 😀
Do not underestimate Dead Girl…..I too thought it might be dumb but found myself shocked, disgusted and fairly horrified with the content and I am an avid horror flick enthusiast. I’ve seen a lot of crazy stuff!!
good list, if only it was completely reversed it would make much more sense.
i cant believe human centipede wasnt on here. most original horror movie ive seen in a long time
Usually disagree with these lists – how wrong I was. I went into it thinking ‘If the Descent isn’t in here this guys doesn’t know horror.’ The others I completely agree with. And now I have Martyrs and Dead Girl to watch. Score. As a recommendation I really enjoyed ‘The Signal’ and ‘Triangle.’ Let me know what you think… oh oh ‘From within’ is pretty good but has it’s flaws.
I’ve seen The Descent about 6 times and it still scares me to pieces.
i didnt really find it scary thought it was kinda corny lol u want scary watch paranormal activity 3 😀
You want to talk about scary, than bring up that shitfest that is Paranormal Activity? Do you want a vagina with that? Fucks wrong with you?
“then bring up”
Paranormal activity was far from scary, but I did like the story. Also I dont know about tooth, but I always like vagina
Paranormal Activity is terrifying, and arguably one the scariest films of all time. You’re probably just some pretentious film snob that hates any film that is succesful and popular.
paranormal 1,2,3 are so lame not scary in the slightest in less your a teenage girl perhaps. I have given up on horror films they are just pathetic now days. please recommend one that makes u jump and actually makes u nervous. the last film i saw that i could recomend was law abiding citizen.
oh and no vamps, monsters, zombies ect its just stupid lol
this is so true, i feel the exact same. Whilst searching for horrors all i see are zombie films. And paranormal activity is so bloody lame
zombiesare one of the most amazing intense and thought provoking monsters in filography everyone has thougt about what they would do in a zombie apocolypse evryone loveszombie films get your shit together
That was a good movie (Law Abiding Citizen) But far from scary!
Law abiding citizen is one of the absolute worst films of all time. Gerard Butler? Seriously? If you want scary watch The Descent and The Descent II.
Descent 1 nd 2 are gay…kinda tells ur story there buddy..lol
I agree, it is cheap horror, the shaky camera and the “who’s round the corner” crap. I’ve seen all 3, and on the third I knew it would be a long wait til something substantial happens. The only horror that took place was right at the end.
umm try sixth sense, when i first watched it it creeped me out its real good try it and tell me what you think 😀
Every person has a unique view and opinion on what is “scary” – for some it is the unknown and unknowable ghostly spirit, and for others it is the masked man with the blades.
I have to agree! Paranormal activity was THE SHIT!!!
I’m a teenage girl and none of the paranormals scared me in the slightest
I call shenanigans on that one
It’s not about success, paranormal activity just isn’t scary in the slightest…and while we’re on the subject why is every one on about the decent? It also is mediocre
Paranormal Activity I’ll admit has a good story but is not that scary really although this is coming from someone who has never been scared in there life by a horror film
Only thing scary about Paranaormal Activity is that it’s based on true events…so that’s just freaky..
Hahahaha. “True events” is a loose term. Every religion has a holy book claiming “true events.”
lol sorry thats kinda funny – just the “true events” part – hey Im Christian love horror movies (strange mix i know) but saying paranormal activity is based on true events? Just kind on funny. Yeah I beleive spirits evil and good are out their and that sort of stuff does happen but saying that movie(s) are based on true events is like saying your typical kidnap torture rape movie is based on true events. Besides that Paranormal Activity was sooooo boring I almost fell asleep. hate it when people film like ‘oh! its happening right now!’ lol just to give their lame ass junk an extra edge.
Also, what’s scary about it is, no it’s not. Not one scene in that movie even claimed to be based on true events. Blair Witch claimed to be based on true events but wasn’t either. If you’re gullible enough to believe that, I bet you’re also a Christian
Your a retard. Nothing about any paranormal shit is real, but there are killers and crazy people in the world. That’s freaky
You can keep your beliefs about paranormal stuff not being real to yourself.
Paranormal Activity is NOT scary, but I still loved it. What does that make me?
a fucking idiot
fuck you, its a clever concept. Im not agreeing with the second and third though
my goodness, be nice. just because people don’t agree with u doesnt give you right to name call.
all three films are …. how to puts this with a touch of delicacy…bored me to shit….but then yet begin my favourite genera i havent been afraid of any film since i was about 10….how ever if yall want freaky im surprised that none of you have spoken of the cemetery 1 and 2, the first 3 chucky’s and how can you guys forget hell all of the hell razor movies????
That’s absolutely ridiculous. That was one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. The acting was so unbelievably awful I couldn’t convince myself of any realism if I tried. That movie was a complete trainwreck.
Paranormal activity was not scary at all good movie but not ac scary and im 13 says something -.-
PA is only scarey to young people or those that have only recently even starting watching horror. Dating back there are much better and scarier Ghost movies. Tell me the scene you found so “disturbingly” scarey in PA? *crickets* Try The Entity for something really scarey of that genre.
You’re probably one of those people who likes films that are successful and popular.
Hey! I have a Vagina and I love horror not Paranormal Activity, that in my opinion is Suspense.
what an asshole, Do you want a dick with that?
So true fuck that pussy shit. A bunch of loud noises that scares little pussies. Decent movie but not scary. I would bitchslap the shit out of that ghost.
Try Asian horror movies. Like Ju-On or Nang Nak. They give me the creeps all the time.
gross
You’re a dick. Can’t you voice your opinion without being a bitch?
I thought paranormal activity 1, 2 and 3 all sucked ass….There’s a film called paranormal entity which is actually a pretty decent watch. It’s like paranormal activity but not for children
Paranormal Activity 3 sucked compared to 2 and #2 wasnt even scary, it was sketchy. theyre all sketchy and nothing more. they arent really scary but they have the element of surprise which some people consider scary but think theyre 2 different things. PA 1,2 & 3 were okay, but definately not the best of all time.
i totally agree the paranormal activity movies are really scary and should be number 10 also it really should go 3,1,2
Sorry to break it to ya bud, but if paranormal activity 3 is scary, you are a little bitch
Watch: The Tunnel (2011) same genre, but it might even be better than the descent!
I agree paranormal activity fuckin sucks I watched it with my 12 year old sister …. Both of us thought it shit … It’s kinda freaky but it’s just a rip off of “Blair witch project” that was a good ass movie … But it’s dumb they made a sequel
i like potatoes
attack of the killer tomatoes
Actually, I thought “Blair Witch” was total crap. After it came out, I had heard my classmates hype it up soooo much for four years-ALL THROUGH HIGH SCHOOL! Another few years later, I finally got to see it for myself. “Blair Witch” absolutely, without a shadow of a doubt, the ONE AND ONLY film for which I COULD NOT suspense my disbelief in my entire life….I am now 28 1/2!

Triangle would be number one on my list – a film that came out of left field and I hardly ever hear anyone talking about. Excellent movie
I loved Let Me In. They found just the right actors to play the child leads, police inspector, and the ‘vampire’s dad/Renfield’ guy. When I first saw ‘Let the Right One In’ it was on a borrowed bootleg with
that awful English dubbing that’s only good when you can laugh at it during a Godzilla fest. I later watched a subtitled version which made all the difference. My one complaint about the American release(Let Me In) was the(spoiler!) pool scene at the end. In the Swedish version you see the unconscious boy released from being held under water and then the left side of the pool gets bloody chunks of the bullies anatomy dropped in as they are torn to pieces(unseen) above water. It’s done in sort of a slow motion, underwater, so-gross-it’s-kind-of-artistic way, even though you know all the action takes place in seconds at ‘Brad Pitt’ vampire speed. In the U.S. version he’s being held under, nearly drowns and all the water immediatly around him explodes with a shower of body parts including heads and limbs, American overkill. It certainly doesn’t ruin the movie for me, the actors and everything else make for a great flick. I recommend both, just watch the subtitled Swedish version.
i definitely preferred the Swedish version. i thought next to it the american version was pure shit. the Swedish one actually set this really creepy tone. a vibe that lasted the whole movie, and was a tad unnerving. were as i found the american version didn’t set that vibe at all.
The boy wasn’t unconscious in the Swedish version. He actually wasn’t even out of breath after being held under water all that time. Kinda odd.
I preferred the remake. The original is also very good, but Let Me In improved a few things.
Saw Let the right one in years ago. I have yet to see the remake Let me in yet. Hope it is a good as the orginal. The only flaw I saw was the the picture for 28 days later was actually for 28 weeks later.
i thought let me in was a very romantic movie
Nice to see Deadgirl on here. I saw it at TIFF on 2008 and loved it, then it all but disappeared. Very good movie!
Deadgirl is one of the most disturbing “horror” movies I’ve ever seen. And, I think I’ve seen them all. Another movie that did not make the list is the 2007 French made film: Inside. Even I have to watch certain scenes in that movie through my hand.
All the movies here is’nt what i had in mind! This list from my point of view is shocking, none of these movies would be in my top 10.I know everyone has they own opinion on movies which is alright,im just being honest.
So what would you add to the list as opposed to the ones listed?
Why the reluctance to say the same about “Let Me In” that you said about “Quarantine”? You might have liked it, but the original wipes the floor with it.
Films that you might have overlooked:
Ginger Snaps (Best werewolf movie since “An American Werewolf in London” – released 2000)
Triangle (Christopher Smith’s time-tangling twist on the slasher genre – released 2009)
Drag Me To Hell (As near to Evil Dead 4 as we are going to get, it seems. Sam Raimi returns to the horror-comedy genre and proves he is still the master. – released 2009)
Black Death (Christopher Smith’s medieval horror – released 2010)
good call on ginger snaps, great flick. wasn’t to big on Drag me to hell, found it trying to hard to be scary, but then all of a sudden trying to be funny, and I ended up wondering why? Because I thought it could have been really awesome if it would have just stayed scary. I’m going to check out black death and triangle straight away though because I’m intrigued!
“Triangle” and “Drag me to Hell” both awesome films replace “dead girl” and “the descent”
waaaay wrong. Deadgirl was definitely one of the most –well for one thing– FUCKED UP movies i have ever seen. But beyond that, it was actually a really good movie. Wierdly. Idk mixed feelings but it was so fucked up that you actually have to appreciate it. And the acting was really believable. its the kind of storyline that you could understand happening (you know, other than the whole deadgirl part lol, but had she existed the rest of the choices they made were really, well, possible or likely )
“Triangle” and “Drag me to Hell” both awesome films replace “dead girl” and “the descent”
really ginger snaps as a best werewolf movie…..oh my my. not even close. ginger snaps was horrible not anywhere close to being in league with american, or dog soldiers, or even underworld, hell or even the howlings…man i always new there was a audience for everything, confirmed with all the likes of paranormal activity, but really?

It’s a good (albeit thinly veiled) metaphor for a girl going through puberty. Also it has relatable female characters which is rare in the horror genre imo. I also found the dialogue pretty clever and it’s just an enjoyable film. Underworld, however, literally put me to sleep.
This is the reason I liked it. I was 13 when I first seen it so it was a relatable film for me at the time. We don’t see enough horror that appeals to women. Although, I love most horror especially slashers I do find it is aimed at men too much by showing scantily clad females with little effort made to make these women relatable.
CANT LIE THAT 1ST SEEN IN DRAG ME TO HELL SCARED THE SHIT OUTTA ME FOR REAL
Agree with you about Ginger snaps. A brilliant film and probably the best warewolf movie of my time. Warewolves are no longer beastly killing machines thanks to Twilight. Grr that film has so much to answer for!
your all stupid no bodys
You’re*
your all stupid homos
go watch a horror movie and cry to your mommy. hater.
you’re*
you’re*
ok, hater. “your” is correct, unless you do the Pyscho thing and become your mother, then “you’re (you are)” would be correct. And please, your blinding brilliance at calling ppl you don’t know and will never know names is so astounding. Stop. Really.
And your comment is what? Impressive? Lol you all need to stop.
I do believe that they were correcting themselves. If they were correcting Ceckeinick then their post would have been indented more. However, it is parallel to Ceckeinick’s post thus meaning that they were replying to their own comment, not Ceckeinick’s comment. Just saying
Homos, for the most part are usually fairly smart.. Unlike the original poster.”your” really dude?! You need to repeat the 5th grade.
Oh, I forgot, loved that 70’s Vampire movie Martin, it was pure greatness! There was also a crazy Vampire movie from Norway, I think called Frostbite or Frostbitten. Pretty good. But my all time new favorite is a foreign flick about Trolls I think it is also called Trolls, also a Scandinavian country of origin.
you need to grow up!!!
I thought Martyrs was complete dreck but that’s just me…..I would add The Thing, if this remake is anything like the original it should be spectacular. Best horror movie is when you can trust nobody
The Thing is not going to be a remake it’s going to be a prequel which I thought was kinda cool, I really enjoyed the original here’s to hoping the prequel will be as good.
On another note I really liked The Cave.
i’ve watched the trailer for “the thing” a number of times now… gotta say it looks like a remake to me. for sure!
i’ve watched the trailer for “the thing” a number of times now… gotta say it looks like a remake to me. for sure!
well it isn’t, so there’s that.
well it isn’t, so there’s that.
think it is a remake this will be the 3rd one to be done
you’re all strangely sure about it being a remake for people who have obviously never read anything about it. it’s not a remake. spend 30 seconds on the internet reading about it and find out for yourselves.
And look at that… now that it’s out, turns out… IT IS A REMAKE!!! They may say it’s not and they end the movie trying to sync up with the John Carpenter version, but it’s the same exact damned story… Find Alien Space Craft. Check. Find Alien Body. Check. Bring Alien Body to research station in giant melting ice cube. Check. Have monster take the shape of dogs. Check. Have the only way to find out who’s infected and who isn’t be to test their blood. Check… do I really need to go on? They say it’s a prequel, but these schmo’s simply tried to wrote a check their asses couldn’t cash and when they got handed the movie by the studio, they did… gasp… get ready for it… a REMAKE! The only difference is… this time it sucked!
*…”Write a check…”
Do you feel bad to find out that it was indeed, NOT a remake but a prequel? It even ties into the original at the end when the dog runs away from the helicopter and they start shooting where, what do you know, THE FIRST ONE starts. Boom, pwnd with knowledge. Fuck tard.
Very good list – Hopefully the making of Mister Fuzzy Head is on next years list
Here’s my list in no order:
Calvaire
Inside
High Tension
The Descent
Frontier’s
Dead Snow
Cold Prey
I Sell the Dead
Wolf Creek
Sheitan
calvaire…what a great pick.
overall good list… however i didn’t enjoy wolf creek as it’s yet another fictitious story claiming to be true…the only person who survived was separate from the group the whole time, and they never found the bodies or evidence as to what happened to them…so everything after the opening sequence was all made up.
wolf creek was awesome! It scared the hell out of me and felt very close to home (ivan milat) one of the most scary movies that i can’t watch too many times without hiding….
Chainsaw – About your comment on Wolf Creek (crap movie btw). The victims were definitely fictitious but the theme of the story isn’t. In Australia loads of backpackers go missing or end up dead all the time. I’m not sure what our problem is… We either hate backpackers or just have a lot of psychopaths in our country but the events of Wolf Creek hit very close to home. I’m not sure if you’re familiar with serial killer Ivan Milat but I believe he was the inspiration for the killer in Wolf Creek. He would take backpackers into Belanglo forest to torture and eventually murder them.

I thought High Tension practiced some over-the-top mendacity in that what one gets at the end is really a story about sexual preference being the motivator for slaughter instead of the dreadfully creepier “just for kicks” stranger-on-stranger crime spree.
Also, where did the truck come from?
Im sorry im reading all of these posts to find some truely good scary movies and I tried to use netflixs just now for “Just for Kicks” hahaha tooo funny what popped up was the same title only its a sweet documentary about athletes hahaha……fuck…..a girl just looking for a fucking good horror on netflix…..NOT going to happen Help! lol
I had to look up mendacity. Good word.
Ugh. Frontier(s) was AWFUL! It started out with promise but they tried to cram in way too many ideas… it was so long and drawn out that when I watched it with my husband and a friend of ours we were quite literally groaning when a new scene began. We kept thinking “something HAS to redeem this” so we finished it… but… oh how wrong we were.
That is an almost perfect list Kisskinski – I would add Ils too
Replace The Descent with The Tunnel, Low budget but way better.
I would have too say that the tunnel was better then the descent BBBUUUTTTT from what i hear number two is supposed to be way better
Great list. But I never heard of Dead Girl. can you please link me to the imdb page of it? I found a few movies titled Dead Girls and don’t know which one Because I’d like to rent it. Thank you.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0896534/
thr you go girl
im sorry but i would have liked to see cabin fever, house of 1000 corpses and devils rejects on the list, rob zombie and eli roth know true horror
cabin fever and it’s sequel are both jokes. House of the Devil trumps both as far as real indie horror goes.
cabin fever and it’s sequel are both jokes. House of the Devil trumps both as far as real indie horror goes.
Thats what im talkin about cabin fever sick! house of 1000 corpses and devils rejects def the best!
this isn’t the top 10 horror movies for juggalos list though.
juggalos are idiots… end of story
My list:
Doomsday
Carriers
Martyrs
Trick R Treat
American Psycho
Inside
Let Me In
Quarantine (haven’t seen REC but this one stands not for the story but because it has the absolute best acting I’ve ever seen in a movie)
Shaun of the Dead
Underworld 1/Rise of the Lycans
The best acting ever seen in a movie? Have you never seen ANY other movie?
The best acting ever seen in a movie? Have you never seen ANY other movie?
i concur, i thought quarantine was a horrible waste of time, almost hate it as much as paranormal activity
I bet to differ have you ever seen Teeth? Now that was a horrible story!
Teeth was funny. Sucks if you say its a horror mov… Oh wait. I guess you could say this is a horror movie when you think about you being the guy who’s dick just got bitten of by a vagina. Thinking about that, Teeth is fucking scary.
Paranormal Activity was good. You’re an ass clown.
actually Underworld never were a Horror movie.. nether was Shaun…anyway i don’t know if they were but they never made me scared
yeah, one is an action movie and one is a comedy. i guess some people are just retarded.
lol
yeah, one is an action movie and one is a comedy. i guess some people are just retarded.
Doomsday. Oh sweet baby jesus, LOVE that movie. Only thing I didn’t like was the car chase scene at the end of the film. All the damage that car should’ve had, but they kept it as pretty as possible for advertisement’s sake.
Doomsday was a great film, i agree about the car damage but its like that in most films. The only thing that really bugged me about the film is the bit were it says that only scotland was quarantined off and on the map it includes quite a large chunk of the north east of england, including Newcastle. Know this is just me being picky but as a geordie, thats someone from newcastle for anyone that doesn’t know, who is sick of people thinking i’m from scotland that just got my back up from the begining. Otherwise though a great film
Neil Marshall’s a Geordie too, so I wouldn’t take it too personally 😉
By the way, when the author says they loved all of his films from Dog Soldiers to Doomsday, does it mean they hated Centurion, or that they’re not aware of it?
Rec 1 & 2 were both WAAAAYYYYYY better than quarantine… Just sayin’.
dead snow
trick or treat
the crazies
dawn of the dead
house of 1000 corpses
30 days of night
resident evil
ginger snaps
thirteen ghosts
doom
13 Ghosts and Doom, really? They are both horrible. Sure 13 Gosts has it’s moments but overall it’s pretty bad.
to each their own dude…
to each their own dude…
i found ginger snaps pretty horrible as well, and resident evil as fun, but nothing worth spending more then 5bucks on. same with the crazies, i liked the original but the remake put me to sleep
I hated house of 1000 corpses so much, but Ginger Snaps is one of my favorite movies ever so I approve.
KEWL ACTION/”HORROR” AND PG13 LATE NIGHT ON USA GARBAGE.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre(the remake with Jessica Biel)panning out thru the brain-pan GREATEST HORROR MOVIE CAMERA SHOT EVER!
Descent-I can tell you how much this movie freaked me out
REC-Better than Quarantine, and so so scary!
Shutter-My favorite ghost story
Hostel-I almost shut this off the first time I watched it…….that’s saying a lot
The Ruins-One of the only horror movies I liked better than the book. I love movies that end the way this one does.
Saw(the first one and only the first one)What an original movie and I’ll never forget the first time I saw the end of this movie
The Host-I loved this movie, It feels like I need to defend it so maybe it doesnt belong on this list, but I don’t care!
All of these movies were horrifying in their own right.
Am I only the only person that thought The Descent was terrible? The characters where so kitschy(“I am clearly the bad ass one!” “And I am clearly the leader!”, and annoying. It wasn’t scary because I was rooting for those little bald bastards to rip em up.
Yeah, I didn’t get that at all from the movie…..I think its just you!! IDK Maybe you saw something we didnt…….
Yeah, I didn’t get that at all from the movie…..I think its just you!! IDK Maybe you saw something we didnt…….
actually a usual HorrorLover gets to know the characters and pick a favorite. then u kinda.. Humanize them more and you get scared because you’re thinking. shit! she just died!. anyway im not here to step on anyone’s toes. and im not the person to tell you what a good movie is. only you know what you like. peace
I agree with you. Not my cup of tea when it comes to horror movies.Absolute garbage, along with martyrs. Stupid stupid movie.
No, If you thought Martyrs was stupid, then it’s because your limited brain didn’t get it. I was completely offended and honestly thought about shutting it off, but it was so much more than I realized. If you didn’t get it, then consider that it wasn’t the movies fault…
It’s a terrible movie
a good scary movie is grave encounters. It is low budget and amateur like paranormal activity, however just as well done if not better.
i’ve seen everything on the list and agree. i would add to the list a few of my own personal favorites……inside, it’s a french film, but even if you have to watch it subtitled as i did still very worth it. one of the most disturbingly violent and bloody movies i’ve seen. next i would have to recommend the 2011 remake of i spit on your grave. the original is a cult classic i’m very fond of, and i had originally thought i would hate the remake as i did with last house on the left or the hills have eyes(due to them changing the story and letting extra characters live, ex. the only survivors in last house.. were supposed to be the parent’s.. but unlike those movies i spit.. was incredible. it had the same basic storyline but all the death scenes were new and very original. it could stand out as it’s own, not a remake. and it’s very graphically violent and unapologetic. i enjoyed drag me to hell as well, although more out of humor then anything else. the signal was also a good watch indeed. i’m not sure if it was within the last 10yrs, but i thought high tension deserved more credit then it got. teeth was another good one if not for anything other than it’s creative and very disturbing plot. gutterballs was one that i thoroughly enjoyed because of its low budget, laughable plot, horrible acting, and in particular the use of “Turn Me Loose” by loverboy during the very graphic rape scene. i’ll give baby blues and grace a honorable mention. and leave with one final addition. a movie that quickly became one of my favorite all time movies, not truly a horror movie maybe, but still incredible none the less, and thats the devils rejects. say what you will about mr. zombies movies. like, love, or hate what he did to halloween, and maybe you didn’t care for house of 1000 corpses, but the devils rejects and his cartoon the haunted world of el superbeasto are two movies you would have to be braindead not to like.
i must add since everyone bitches online anyway…that i thought paranormal activity was the shitiest horror flick since the blair witch. the majority of the movie was the married couple arguing, and most of the action took place while they were sleeping and was no surprise at all. i mean cmon there was a fucking clock in the bottom of the screen that would start rapidly moving once they went to sleep then suddenly go back to normal speed a few seconds before something happened. they might as well put a pop up window on the screen saying “don’t look away here come’s something scary” that coupled with the couples constant bickering that seemed to be the focal point of the movie, ruined it for me. i’d rather felate a hot curling iron then watch that movie a second time.
shit i forgot to mention the “feast” trilogy. incredibly over the top and laugh out loud funny with lots of blood and gore…here’s 3 examples from those 3 movies of why there excellent… first only movie i’ve seen where one of the cast slams a monsters cock in a door trying to run from it cutting it off. second a small “child” monster face rapes a woman right before getting blown up, the other used her as bait and had her strapped with a bomb….third naked midgets running from monsters..need i say more
I completely agree. However, you may not realize the true horror of having a bitch for a wife. That being said, movies are like food: we all have different tastes. I still compare the amount of ‘unrest’ I feel in a horror movie to my original fear of the Stephen King ‘IT”
Now we’re talking IT is one of the best movies ever.
I was just 9-10 years old when i saw IT. And i bin afraid of clowns since then. Any kind clown scares the shit out of me.Now we are talking clowns. Pet semetary is a nice one too,
The descents was a fucking awsome movie. It really creeps you out, when they are stuck in there. I cant take such sticky situations. Gives me claustophobya or how the fuck you spell that. Really great movie..
I was 4 when I first saw it. Was terrified of bathrooms ’till I was like 10 and scared of the dark for a couple of years after that. 😛
speaking of cult classics how bout blood sucking freaks and the emerald jungle not forest jungle not really horror but still cult classics yes exorcist is still one of the best all time horror’s
I’m Glad to see some really good horror movies on here! Great list, I did see that at least one person added High Tennsion on their list. It’s a French horror film I LOVE it such a great plot.
It’s good to see several people listing the same movies, though we won’t always agree. I snoozed through both versions of “Let me In.” interesting movie, but not scary at all.
I agree with “The Descent.” Awesome.
I also like that the critic made it very clear that some movies were simply violent, because that is NOT the same thing as scary or suspenseful. I’d rather jump and scream than just be nauseated.
Good suspense is so hard to find these days.
100% correct! Huge amounts of blood and torture are NOT the same thing as scary or suspense.
interesting picks. I agree with some, not so much on others. I guess here would be my picks:
Let The Right One – Haven’t seen the American remake, but have not heard good things.
The Descent – yeah they were typical stereotypes, but try watching in a dark room with surround sound.
In the mouth of Madness – great great great horror
Anti-Christ – drama that borderlines horror for a few scenes
Teeth – like Anti-christ, should scare the bejezuz out of any man.
Phantasm – Old? sure, but scared the hell out of me as a child.
Salem’s Lot – same description as Phantasm, and they don’t sparkle
Dog Soldiers – More Marshall. The action is there, but the characters are awesome
Ginger Snaps – been mentioned above, but it’s a damn good flick.
The Exorcist – It’s a classic for a reason. My ex-GF didn’t slep for a week after watching it and she’s 22
honorable mention – Catwoman – Hally Berry was so bad, the movie was bad, Stone was bad. It had me trembling
this was supposed to be for the last 10 years…….this guys list would be vastly different I’m sure without that restriction…..that being said ya Phantasm is an awesome movie!
shit ya salems lot scared the shit outta me as a kid and yes the exorcist will never fall off the charts i said the same thing but this is a list of the past 10 years so i guess i would agree on 90% of this list
Well than try watching beyond the door, scarier than the excorcist.
What about The Orphanage? That’s a great movie– creepy, tragic, disturbing, atmospheric and intelligent…despite what the preview would have you think.
session 9 anyone?
ZOMBIELANDD :DDD FTW
Has no one seen ‘The Road’? I found this film to be the most horrifying film I have watched in the past ten years.
best father/son epic on film that i can think of. “i’ll kill anyone that touches you, because thats my job” AWWWW.
Yes a very horrifying movie, though I would not consider it a horror movie, it’s was still disturbing to watch
The most disturbing scene of any movie of any genre happens in The Road. The cellar scene completely ruined me. Some of the imagry, but mainly the relazation of what was happening there is what did it for me. Also reading that scene in the book was even more depraved.
I couldn’t stop thinking about this movie after I saw it. It was scary because of how real it felt. It didn’t need to be a “horror” to be absolutely horrifying. Definitely in my top ten.
fuck your own ass. why you r visiting the tpic???…mother fucker
Dead girl was one of the shittiest movies I’ve ever seen in any genre imo. I am pleased with the rest of this list, though.
My favorite part of this article is the comment for Zombieland; “Its the funniest zombie buddy comedy flick since Shaun of the Dead.” So why not just but Shaun of the Dead on the list?
Second favorite, the image for 28 Days Later being from 28 Weeks Later.
Opinions differ, I just wish there wasn’t slop like that.
They all fucking suck. Long live 70’s and 80’s horror.
yeah…i dont even know how i stumbled onto this website but the majority of the films listed makes it abundantly clear as to why the horror genre has gone downhill. im surprised i didnt see “silent hill” or “the ring 2” on here. there are only so many times i can watch basket case and wish modern horror wasnt just remakes or “found footage” dildo fests.
holy shit i forgot to make fun of “my soul to take” and “scream 4”. give it up wes, give it up.
I like this list a lot. I have not seen Martyr. I would suggest these in no order.
The Ring (American version)
The Grudge (Japanese version)
Dead Girl
The Descent
Dawn Of The Dead
Saw
28 Days Later
Let Me In
Zombieland
Friday the 13th remake (nobody agrees with me on this one)
I agree with you on the Friday the 13th remake
The Ring, really?
What’s wrong with the original Japanese version?
I mean the remake is okay, but it completely lacks the atmosphere of the original.
The Ring is a not scary, but creepily strange and mind-boggling. Parts are scary. It’s my favorite.
evil dead part one is really good
A remake of that would be awesome
I don’t particularly care for horror/slasher flicks, so I was surprised at how many of these I’ve seen. Let the Right One In was fantastic in tone and so quietly disturbing. And what really kept me in suspense with The Descent wasn’t the creatures, but the claustrophobia that one instilled in me–the spatial confinement was filmed brilliantly, because I certainly couldn’t breathe through a great deal of that movie. But what I LOVE are comedic revisionist films that take on the genre. Zombieland was good. But 3 of my other favorite comedy flicks from the more recent years: Tucker and Dale vs Evil, Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon, and Severance. Brilliant and hilarious entries in the comedy/horror genre.
Have to admit that ‘The Descent’ is the funniest film I had seen in a long time.
I don’t get how it’s scary though. I find it ridiculous and boring at times. Has some really funny parts in it but other than that it’s probably one of the worst films I’ve seen.
Have to agree with xphiler06. Tucker & Dale, Behind The Mask and Severance (or Shaun) were like palette cleansers. With the number of unnecessary remakes, sequels and, to a certain extent, prequels, it’s good to see something partway original.
Personal issue here, hated Drag Me To Hell. After the first 15 minutes or so, all I was waiting for was for the lead protagonist to be dragged to hell!
One of the main issues with modern horror is the reliance on gore which is helpful though not necessary, and the inability to create empathy between the viewer and the on-screen character. Vast majority of films I’ve seen of late . . . couldn’t care less if the characters died or not.
Kind of removes the “horror”.

o ya childeren of the corn agian not the last 10 yrs but has to b in the top ten list’s
My list would go for best horror movies of the last decade: (in no particular order):
Silent Hill- Possibly the best horror video game adaptation ever….
28 Days later – totally re energized the zombie genre in my opinion.
Saw- So graphic and brutal…so raw
Hostel- Again the same as saw but in a different way. Humans torturing other humans for fun…insanely plausible.
The strangers- Um the reason I never want to live in the woods all alone.
The Exorcism Of Emily Rose- Not as good as the original but scary all the same since it was based on a true story.
The Descent- Takes advantage of most peoples fear of enclosed spaces.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre- awesome remake…it got everything that we loved about the original right.
Wrong Turn- cannibalistic hillbillies is there anything more terrifying.
Open water- simply terrifying…and oh yeah whats that nibbleing on my leg?
30 Days of Night- One of the best vampire tales Ive ever seen.
The Human Centipede – So gross its laughable.
The Mothman prophecies- OMG how do you get away from something like that.
Jeepers creepers- destined to become a horror classic.
I agree with Human Centipede. I couldn’t help but laugh awkwardly at the horrendous-ness of it all.
The hills have eyes was good

You’re missing Drag Me to Hell, but otherwise, good work!
In the description for the movie Martyrs, it was mentioned that the writer thought that this was more disturbing than The Serbian Film. My question is, have you ever read the description or the synopsis of The Serbian Film? It involves raping newborns and young children! If that’s not disturbing, than I don’t know what is.
Anyway, I agree with most of this list.
Has anyone mentioned any of these films?
Kim Jee-woon’s – A Tale of Two Sisters
Park Chan-wook’s – Thirst
One of the best vampire movies I’ve seen in a long time and that includes “Let The Right One In”.
Hideo Nakataa’s – Ring (the original Japanese version)
Dead Snow – Common…..Zombie Nazis….it doesn’t get any better than that!
Timur Bekmambetov’s – Night Watch and Day Watch
Okay, not really horror but the film has some very well thought-out supernatural elements
Creep
Set in the tunnels of the London Underground……It scared the shit out of me! couldn’t take the Tube for a week….just kidding I don’t live/work in London…..too bloody expensive
Severance
Okay…I know it stars Danny Dyer (lets face it his name basically sums up his acting skills…..”Dyer”) but the scene where they try to fit a severed foot into a very small fridge made me cringe and piss myself with laughter at the same time.
J.A. Bayona’s – The Orphanage
Planet Terror (All that puss…… yuck!)
Miike Takashi’s – The Happiness of The Katakuris
Okay, this one’s a little out there. To be honest the only way to describe this film is to say it’s ‘Night of the Living Dead’ meets ‘The Sound of Music’, with a little bit of weird stop animation thrown in for good measure. More laughable than scarey, the story follows three generations of a Japanese family and their attempts to open a ‘successful’ guest house. However, through a series of bizarre events all their guests begin to drop dead. The family decide to keep the deaths quiet and bury the bodies in the forest behind the house………the result being……Zombies!
Have to agree though “28 Days Later” and “Zombieland” are amazing.
Jacobs ladder was scary good
Feast is one you missed
no one had mentioned “Eden Lake”. Incredibley tense film.
Only 1 person mentioned wrong turn. Fcukin disturbing and iv seen them all!!!
That Dead Girl movie sucks. Why would people recommend it. Guys having sex with a dead girl and she bires one them and bires a ddog. Bad acting, just terrible movie. What about Thirst. That was a great vampire movie or A Tale of Two Sisters. I really want to see I Saw TheDevil. I head it was really good.
The horror movies that are worth watching(My opinion) in no particular order;
Saw
30 days of Night
Dawn Of The Dead
Day of The Dead
The Descent
The Grudge(Ju-On)
Child’s Play
Resident Evil
Final Destination
Wrong turn 1
Jeeper Creepers
The Messenger
I Still Know What You did last summer
Shutter
The Eye
The Exorcist
Gothika
Van Helsing
Legion
Holloween
Movies that are pretty good but some might not like it;
Drag Me To Hell
InsidiousLong Time DeadBlack XmasThiteenth Ghost
You idiot, REC its not spanish, its from Argentina
LOL
REC is a film from Spain. Which makes it a Spanish film. They language of the film is also Spanish, so even it was an Argentinian film, it’s still in Spanish.
The*
Watch Quarantine it was the American version of REC, and kept true to the original in EVERY WAY! Too bad the Quarantine 2 was NOTHING which totally bummed me out. REC 2 which was a STELLAR sequel!!!
All great movies but make sure you check out Takasha Miike films, like Audition, Imprint, Three Extremes and I spit on your grave wasnt scary but it was badass. Also Insidious was a pretty decent mess wit your mind movie!
And its Takashi Miike, my bad but check out his shit it is the most fucked up shyt you’ll ever see in a movie!
I was
looking for a list to go by so I’d know what movies to rent and not. I’ve decided that I won’t be going out for
Halloween so of course, I still want to be scared out of my mind and the good
thing is that I came across this list to steer me in the right direction. I found all the movies I wanted to rent at
Blockbuster and using my Blockbuster
Movie Pass
with DISH Network allows me to rent without any hassles. Thank goodness I work at DISH Network and now
new and existing customers can check it out!
28 days later was legendary thanks to the genius that is Danny Boyle. 28 Weeks later was shit, an absolute shambles and I hope 28 months starts digging its own grave…. Never Kill A Good MOVIE! YOU CUNT!!!!
Why the hate, 28 weeks later was brilliant!
I just watched paranormal activity 2 and I freaked me out I just starded liking horror films any really scary keep u up at night ones????
My Top Scary Movies No Order
-CandyMan
-The Descent
-Grave Encounters
-Insidious
-Case39
-TheRuin
-Turistas
-Darkness Falls
-Dead Silence
-The Collector
I agree with this list although i stopped reading after i saw 28 days later. it didn’t scare me for sh*t
Well the second one was good, but the first reaked of adjefhsljfb
I want to know of a movie that will give me nightmares or night terrors for weeks. Nothing is scary anymore. Btw, Saw isn’t scary at all, just very gruesome. Same with Texas Chainsaw Massacre and other movies that are just about murder. I want to be scared, not grossed out. Anyone have any reccomendations?
Wes Craven is a legend.
Overall, it’s a good list. Most of those movies already have cult status.. I only disagree with Zombieland, good film but it’s more horror/comedy, mix of genres that usually has more laughs than scares.
Here is my list in no particular order:
– Dawn of the Dead (exceptional remake that works on almost every level)
– Let The Right One In (Swedish film is still better than American IMO)
– The Orphanage (Drama/horror with bits of fantasy, very atmospheric and well done)
– Three…Extremes (THIS is the greatest horror anthology since Creepshow)
– Midnight Meat Train (It has love it hate it ending but it’s still incredibly underrated movie)
– The Descent (Works on every level, scary indeed)
– The Ring (This is one of rare remakes that I found better than original… and Naomi Watts was terrific)
– The Others (Atmosphere and sounds are all it needed to be so scary)
– 30 days of night (It has so-so ending but everything before that is very good)
– Martrys (It’s hard to watch at times but it still has something more to offer than blood and gore)
oldies but goodies
Wishmaster
Beyond the door
It
Amityville Horror
Really??? Zombieland????? Come on, WHAT was scary about that movie? It was just so-so funny. Gore. That’s it.
this one is being produced in my home town, looks like it might actually be good!
http://www.theatreofthedead.com.au
http://www.facebook.com/theatreofthedead
I’ve read through most of these comments and I’m surprised no one’s mentioned “Mum and Dad”.
Now THAT is a disturbing horror film. I’ve never been the same……
Someone mentioned The Serbian Film (or Movie, or something) and the description they gave was enough to scar me for life. I’m not going near that kind of shit. That’s just ALL kinds of wrong……
28 Days Later is not a zombie movie, and the infected do not hunger for flesh, they don’t EAT their victims, they savage you until you either die or are infected. And given that the infection takes hold in about 45 seconds, they usually don’t even kill you. Indeed by the end of the film the plague was dying out because the infected DON’T EAT. Whereas zombies eat and eat but still can’t die of starvation. You have to wait until they wither completely which the infection slows.
Also I think that the Orphanage should be on there… it’s a great spanish flick, it was scary AND sad. It’s my all time favorite movie.
I’m really disappointed to see that House of the Devil has been completely neglected.
Movie poster #10 is 28 weeks later (not 28 days later), brilliant sequel… prequel(whatever you wanna call it) to the original, Splice was also good for me.. not really a horror but was awesome non the less
Can anyone tell me the name of the movie where: the little girl fell off a cliff into the water, something was in there calling her. Her mom and her were in the car, they had a wreck and ended up in this creepy place where they were real religious and thought she was a witch. At the end another little girl made the bad church lady get tied up with barbed wire. That’s all I can come up with LOL! Wasn’t scary just a little creepy. Just can’t think of the name and its driving me nuts!
• SPOILER ALERT •
(The Descent)
The Descent is great! As for part 2…….
I thought the whole point of the film is that they all simply went mad, and that there were actually no monsters.
Therefore, the second film makes NO SENSE whatsoever and is just an American bastardization!
And she escaped??? How???
My list is:
Let the right one in
28 days later
The ring
Shutter island
The others
The orphanage
Let me in
The devil’s backbone
Ginger snaps
Devil
I also like Shaun of the dead and Zombieland, but I consider them more comedies than horror films.
I have to watch some films like Audition or Rec that could be in the list too.
I agree with the majority of your choices.
Mine are as follows…in no particular order:
1. Let the right one in
2. The Devil’s Backbone
3. 28 Days Later (Not a big fan of 28 weeks later)
4. The Others
5. The Orphanage
6. Dawn of the Dead
7. Shaun of the Dead
8. Old Boy (You have to see it to understand that it is horror/Drama mixed)
9. Martyr’s
10. Dead Snow
11. And for those of you who don’t count Shaun of the Dead, I give you…Paranormal Activity
i dont understand people who say The Descent is a good movie. Its god awful garbage. its laughable.
the most unbelievable plot. terrible acting.
“hey lets go into a cave we’ve never been in before. should i bring the map? nah thats ok we dont need it. hahahha”….so TERRIBLE.
You do realize they went to the wrong cave on the accord of the “lead” spelunker? The other believed it was the same cave they had been through prior times hence why they didn’t bring a map. She wanted to impress them with her awesome skills which were void and prohibited.
Get your shit straight.
I think the Decent is one great movie to watch in HD. I just
saw it using my subscription from DISH where I work. The 200 plus channels give
me the most of HD. There is no other pay-TV provider that can provide this much
HD. The HD from DISH is free for life so this is a yearly savings of $120.00.
That is some great savings that goes to other things. DISH is also offering a
free home upgrade to HD. So if you are ready to get the most HD then DISH will
be the best option. I do nothing but watch movies in HD so DISH is a great way
to get the most from my TV. Don’t wait get the best in HD today.
Pokemon
I think a porn with your mum would be fair scary,
im downloading the orpange though, that will have to do until then
This was an awesome list, but seriously looking through a lot of the comments gave me so many new movies to watch, some were crap but the majority were awesome, seriously thank you people so many great horror flicks I would of never even heard of, gotta love the internet.
My top ten horror in no particular order.
-Masters of Horror Anthology (not movies but fantastic)
-The bloody reunion
-the victim (caution. If you don’t like horror that you have to think about stay away)
-the hitcher
-the original grudge movies (foreign)
-28 days later, but not the sequel
-original nightmare on elm street
-candy man
-the shining
Some of these are not recent but favs. This is just off the top of my head. If I took time I would put up a better list. I do have to say though I’m much picker in terms of storyline with horror. If it doesn’t make sense it’s crap. This is why I hate many popular horror movies. I analyze all movies from a wannabe novelist point of view which makes me extra critical. I have come to believe the United States is not capable of putting out a decent horror movie.
As others have mentioned it’s the first time i read a list on the internet that i agree with for the most part.
Its nice to see comments from all of you…. m a new freak looking for better horror movies
Some good picks there, but I definitely would have included at least one of the Rob Zombie movies. He brought some real originality and spice to the horror genre.
I have a hard time defining this movie as drama or horror, but it creeps me out in a bad way, so throwing “Hard Candy” there. It was amazing and deeply unnerving.
Let Me In was right.
Before I start my list I must say that all of Neil Marshall’s films are the same. They are all chase films. Dog Soldiers- Soldiers in Scotland trying to run away from Werewolves. The Decent – Girls in cave trying to escape from bat creatures. Doomsday – It’s just the Road Warrior with a plague storyline. Chase scenes aplenty with a Wez wannabee to top it off. Lastly, Centurion is just Roman soldiers trapped north of Hadrian’s Wall getting Chased down by Picts. We get it Neil, you love chase films but please stop rehashing Dog Soldiers. Every movie he makes is the same.
My top ten of the last Decade
10. Ginger Snaps
9. Creep
8. Feast
7. The Signal
6. High Tension
5. The Devil’s Backbone
4. The Orphanage
3. Rec
2. Mulberry Street
1. Stake Land
you think stake land is the best and you’re giving advice? fuck you don’t know shit about film…all your picks suck, every one.
not sure if anyone here mentioned High Tension, that movie was messed up and creepy…I loved it!!
Pontypool
Pontypool
Pontypool
BUGGER OF U OL…..
ITZ OL JST BULLSHIT…
DNT TRY 2 FOOL DA PEOPLE..
The descent and it’s sequel are two of my favorite movies of all time.
Why don’t you guys watch
The Life and Death of a Porno Gang
and
A Serbian Film
before you go mentioning anymore crap horror films.
My list of the best horror films of the past decade (personal opinion obviously)
In order from last to first:
10. The Crazies 2010
9. Dagon
8. Hostel
7. Outpost
6. The Mist
5. Splinter
4. 28 Days Later
3. Hills Have Eyes 2006
2. Altered
1. Dawn of the Dead 2004
Insidious is the best I have ever seen. It has every element. If you have not seen it.. Please. See it.
Absolutely spot on about Martyrs. One of the most horric and disturbing films I’ve ever seen. I couldn’t leave it alone and the story line sucked me I big time. Would have been my number 1.
I have some movies I want to add, since your list was actually good..I know I like a lot of movies that the masses dont so maybe u guys won’t like these either, but the movies dead end, shrooms, and pulse are some of my faves. Also deadgirl was awesome..most of the 8 films to die for are worth a watch as well.
My list would be:
– Martyrs: I still remember what I felt in my stomach in the end of this one…
– Saw: Just the better franchise of the decade, and the first movie what actually clever.
– Fritt Vilt (Cold Prey): for me, the best slasher of the decade.
– The Mist: because of the ending, just saying…
– 28 Days Later: favourite zombie movie
– Frontiere(s): just brutal
– Frozen: because I’m sure I will think of this movie whenever I decide to go snowboarding
– Haute Tension (High Tension): if it wasn’t for the ending, it would be a perfect slasher movie.
– Trick R Treat: the most entertaining in this list
– La Meute (The Pack): because it is weird
glad i ran into this thread!..great list, think descent was awesome….gross vulgar killings like saw aint horror, descent is a bloody great example of horror!!!..jeepers creepers was also a good horror!!
my list would be!
descent
jeepers creepers
jeepers creepers 2
the exorsist
jaws
let me in
evil dead
wolfcreek
wrong turn
alien
…….enjoy!!!
I don’t think any movies are scary at all, not saying there are not good horror flicks but i keep waiting for something that is going to make me trip when alone, or make me start wondering about shit when its dark. As far as creepy movie’s, i think it would be cool if someone would re-do poltergeist. Those movie’s used to scare the crap out of me as a kid. Now i can’t watch it without pointing out the cheesy 80’s graphics. Paranormal Activity still i thought was good, but not anything to lose sleep over.
A Serbian Film made me cringe… not for a weak heart. Watch at your own risk. (Might not want to watch this one with family)
Not sure about having Trick ‘R Treat so high. Some nice ideas but pretty silly on the whole. Some pretty glaring omissions too. Here’s a better list…
http://edinburghhorrorclub.blogspot.com/search/label/Top%205%20Lists
So my list is as follows.
1-Martyrs
2-The Shining
3-I saw the devil
4-Ringu
5-The Exorcism of Emily Rose
6-Paranormal Entity (Not activity)
7-À l’intérieur
8-Haute Tension
9-Frontiers
10-Noroi
11-Blair Witch Project
12-Dead Silence
13-IT
14-Red Dragon
15-30 Days of Night
16-The Thing
17-28 Days Later
18-Mirrors
19-The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
20-4 Weddings and a Funeral…Hugh Grant scares the shit out of me
I couldn’t stop at 10 and I know I’ve still missed some great ones…The order might not be correct either but in my opinion these are all great horror films.
hey!!! i wanna see room408 here!!!!
cuz it’s a bit hilarious but very very scaryyy!!!
evil dead too, the original and A NIGHTMARE AT ELM STREET SOOOOO SCCCAAARRRRYYYYY MAKES ME AWAKE ALL NIGHT!!!!!!
My list in no particular order…
The Descent
Drag Me To Hell
28 Days Later
Oldboy
Silent Hill
The Mist
Three Extremes/Dumplings
Midnight Meat TrainMayThe Others
If you want a good Horror film usually the best one I find are to do with Spirits and Possesion
The Exorcist(Linda Blair) Or Insidious. Witchboard is pretty good too
All these aren’t necessarily scary but they are good films none the less that involve some pretty heavy stuff . Also Zombie films are good place to find some gore like in Day of The dead (original) when the man gets his insides ripped out. If your seeking Romero zombie film’s I would suggest watch the originals as the remakes aren’t as classic, for starters what the hell is with those running zombies? However the 1990 remake version of Night of the living dead is an acceptable remake. If your looking for a good slasher The texas Chainsaw Massacre never fails to entertain me and also Creep- set in the London underground is a good example, there is one scene in the film that will make women physically hurt just by watching it. You may not agree with me but I wouldn’t reccomend a Vampire film to watch, I just don’t think they are good enough for modern day unless ofcourse we are talking about the one exception in my case 30 days of night. Anyway this is my opinion on horror films, if you don’t like it lump it!
think silent house will make the list? a lot of people are talking about it.
In my opinion, you missd a few. What about the french movies “Inside” or “Fronteirs”. Inside is one of the best horror movies I’ve ever seen period. There is also “The Lost” based on the Ketchum book. And one which I thought was better than Zombieland (which I really did enjoy) is “Stakeland”. It is more relentless and terrifying. Just some suggestions. Watch and enjoy.
Just spent ages reading through what alot of you had to say on your favourite horror movies.
This is my list: (Lots weren’t even mentioned on here)
*dawn of the dead – My favourite zombie movie.
*texas chainsaw massacre – Original and scared the crap outta me first time I watched it
*wrong turn 1 – good movie. Only one negative comment… wrong turn, hills have eyes.. etc.. they all have those messed up creatures in them.. not very original anymore.
*Insidious – definitly one of the best i’ve seen recently… the baby scene scared the shit out of me.. when that thing was in the room with it.
* Saw movies – just plain messed up but original and well thought out.
*Nine Dead (dunno if you would classify it as a horror movie.. but its similar to the saw movies and was a good watch)
*Rogue River – messed up… but not a bad movie.
*The resident – probably more of a thriller but good watch.
*The reef
* Jeepers creepers 1 & 2 – definitly original.. one of my favourite movies to date.
*Signs- depending on your beliefs.. determines whether you liked this movie but I enjoyed it.. once again its original.
*The sixth sense- gave me goosebumps.
*Silence of the lambs
* Forget me not
Paranormal activity 1 (scared me at first)
But when I realised it was all fake… It was a downer. & 2-3 I didn’t even bother watching.
Maybe they don’t all scare the crap out of you… but at least some of these have a decent story line and aren’t so predictable.
We definitly need some really good horrors to come out! It seems to be less and less each year.
I definitly have more favourites!! Just don’t come to my mind atm.
There is another movie I watched years ago about these psycho guys that are prisoners.. and they are working on an old highway.. (as prison workers) all in chains… with machinery..
But there ghosts if I remember correctly and they gruesomely kill people who pass by the old highway.
Can’t for the life of me remember what it is called.. I’ve been trying to look it up for ages now, but cant find it anywhere.
I think it may be called chain gang or something like that… anyone knows please tell me!

ok well I thought orphan was just freaky and though it mightn’t be strictly a horror, it freaked me out big time.
One of the sickest films i’ve seen was Pig, wow i had to turn away a few times coz it was that bad. Has anyone seen it?
I actually really like zombie movies,i thought dawn of the dead was pretty good although im not game enough to watch any actual horror movies. if i ever did i would probably, scream throw up or cry my eyes out and then never sleep again. all you horror junkies will probably call me chicken but im really scared
you suck
Great list, though I thought 1,2,and 3 are more like 8.9 and 10. Maybe I got the order wrong. The fact that Martyrs was on this list shows this guy knows his horror. I think “The Collector” belongs up here. Very good horror flic. You have Saw type machinery and traps playing out in a fresh storyline. Plus the villain freaks me out.
I loved Devils Rejects, But Rob Zombie’s remake of the original Halloween is very worthy of top ten’ness
i thought mirrors 1 & 2 was pretty gd scary movie…
Paranormal Activity and Insidious suck my big hairy buts. This list is pretty good though, Trick R Treat was good, but 28 Days Later all the way
No one mentioned silent hill very good movie blood, gore and disturbing all at the same time. One of my favorites. Or what about resident evil.
all the parta of SAW r just awesome!!
this is a really good list (one of the few) but I think that Halloween, directed by rob zombie in 2007, desrves to be on here, and while many might say it is just another remake it actually offers a lot in terms of pure gore and a good story line.
Love anything Rob Zombie. His mind is brilliant. I also enjoyed Halloween 2 by Rob Zombie, although most people didn’t dude to the more indie/artistic feel.
There are lots of movies had come in last decade. But i think there is also some place for top Horror movies which is scaring people at high level and people are liking them. Because they want something extraordinary happenings which can give them some interesting and enjoyable part of life to be sacred with
Please someone tell me a good scary horror film to watch, have seen most if not all of the films in the above conversations and feel there must be something better out there, i have been on the edge of my seat with a few but not scared

Depends on what type of scary you are looking for. Do you even know? Absentia is great, well done, jumpy, and heartbreaking. I Spit On Your Grave will fuck with your head in a brutal way. You’ll want to turn the TV off, but trust me don’t it’s worth it to stick too the end. Want a good monster movie, Splinter is truly creepy and gave me shivers. Funny Scary would be a movie like Feast, not Zombieland. Zombieland is cute. Check out this blog, http://horror-movies.ca/
But all in all, if you looked at that list and weren’t scared by at least a few titles then I’m not sure you can be scared!? Martyr’s for example which was on the list above, is disgusting and heartbreaking-ly terrifying. So maybe your watching them with the wrong thought process, don’t watch these movies telling yourself “it’s just a movie” or trying to rate them right off the bat. Take it for what it is, let yourself get absorbed, sucked in…and finally pretend that you are the main character/victim.
not a bad list, i would not have put the descent on here,
loved triangle that was creepy more than scary,i have yet to find a movie that really scares the living crap out of me lol.
i hated paranormal activity i watched no1 and was so bored i could’nt bring myself to watch 2 or 3
i love all the old hammer horrors there not scary but the atmosphere is amazing
shake, rattle, n roll – check it out!!!
also feng shui. best horror movie in the philippines, foreals
session 9
the shrine
gravedancers
joshua (not horror- more thriller, but very good)
yellow brick road
the 4th kind
Masters of Horror – Cigarette Burns (John Carpenter)
The Shrine is truly weird. It seriously creeped me out, I couldn’t stop thinking about it after it was over.
Seriously, what is it with “Let The Right One In” constantly being lumped into the “horror” genre? At what point in the movie, AT ALL, are you supposed to be frightened? If anything it’s closer to a romance film, or a “coming-of-age” story, or drama, or….whatever, but it is no way a horror film, the film moves you, emotionally. It’s brilliant.
Agree. Great film, but people are missing the point. Either that or they think just because something has a vampire or a zombie in it, it’s horror.
Huh? Who said zombies can’t die of starvation? The only “rule” for a zombie is that they’re undead and eat flesh. And, actually, according to voodoo, which has zombies in their beliefs, zombies can starve to death.
What ever happened to dream catcher peoples. You know the one by stphen king. He’s a great writer so his movies need to be half decent.
Just watched Martyrs , absolutely amazing film ! , would recommend this to all horror lovers .. has a decent amount of gore and very well thought out keeps you on edge the whole time ! … i have seen loads of horror films and they just dont seem to cut it with me as i dont get scared but i must admit this has got to be one of my favourites now ! watch ittt !!!
Dread, saw it for the first time last night.
That movie was pretty sick and extreamly twisted.
But what can i say, definatly makes my top ten list.
Clive Barker is an extreamly talented horror writer.
I would have to suggest all of Clive Barker’s films.
Book of Blood being one of my fav’s.
