How come nobody told me there’s a new David Cronenberg movie coming out? A Dangerous Method reunites the master of body horror with Viggo Mortensen for a third round, this time playing Sigmund Freud as he engages in a love triangle with fellow psychiatrist Carl Jung (Michael Fassbinder) and Sabina Spielrein (Keira Knightley), one of the first female psychoanalysts. And, wouldn’t you know it, there are some photos out showing off our main cast.
The film, adapted by Christopher Hampton (Atonement, Dangerous Liasons) from his play The Talking Cure, obviously won’t be a return to genre filmmaking. Unless I’m really underestimating the screenwriter of Total Eclipse. But it’s hardly the director’s first venture into period filmmaking (see: M. Butterfly, also based on a play). I’m hoping for a lot of weird sex a la Crash. We can expect A Dangerous Method in February 2011 or thereabouts.
