Unai Emery returns to the Premier League. The Spanish coach left Villarreal and became the new manager of Aston Villa. Thus, the 51-year-old will lead two Polish actors – Jan Bednarek and Mate Kasch.
We would like to remind you that Steven Gerrard was sacked as coach of the Villains a few days ago. This was in the wake of the unsatisfactory performance of the team. On Monday, rumors surfaced that Emery would be the successor to the legendary footballer. As reported by Fabrizio Romano, Aston Villa were willing to pay six million euros for the Spaniard – that was the fee clause in his contract. In the evening the news was confirmed and the 51-year-old was announced as the new club manager from Birmingham.
In turn, Villarreal thanked Emery for the cooperation in an official statement. The club stated that during his tenure “Yellow Submarine” achieved the greatest success in its history – its victory in the European League in the 2020/2021 season.
For Emery, this is the second attempt for the Premier League club. In 2018, he replaced the famous Arsene Wenger as Arsenal’s technical director. The Spaniard worked with the Arsenal team for a year and a half, after which he was released. In addition to Arsenal and Villarreal Emery, he has led in his coaching career teams such as Sevilla and Paris Saint-Germain.
After 12 rounds, Aston Villa are just three points clear of the relegation zone and are in 15th place. The players of “The Villans” are representatives of Poland – Mate Kach and Jan Bednarek, on loan from Southampton. While the former has been playing regularly since the start of the season, the latter has had problems winning a place in the starting lineup so far.
