A rare celestial spectacle will occur on Monday evening: a full moon known as a “supermoon” and a “blue moon” will be visible in the sky.

The rare combination, called a “super blue moon,” occurs when different cycles of blue moons and supermoons align on the calendar, NASA’s Nova Petro, Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter program scientist, told the outlet. USA Today.
Here’s why Monday’s full moon is so special.
What is a Super Moon?
When the Moon’s orbit brings it closer to Earth than usual, this cosmic combination is called a “supermoon.” So it occurs when the Moon is full at the same time the Moon’s orbit is closest to Earth. Astrologer Richard Nolle coined the term in 1979.
“Because the Moon’s orbit is not perfectly circular, the Moon is closer to Earth at times during its orbit than at other times,” says NASA.
When the moon reaches its closest point to Earth, the full moon appears larger and brighter than at other times.
What is a blue moon?
There are two types of blue moons: seasonal and monthly. On Monday, you can see the seasonal variety.
A seasonal blue moon occurs when there are four full moons in the same season (in this case, summer). When this happens, the third out of four is considered a blue moon.
A monthly blue moon refers to the second full moon in the same month.
In both cases, blue moons are extremely rare occurrences due to the cycle of the full moon.
The cycle of the Moon lasts 29.5 days. But, as Mike Reid, professor of astrophysics at Missouri State University, points out, months can have 28, 29, 30 or 31 days.
Both cycles create transitions, resulting in one more moon in a season or month.
Note: Monday’s full moon is unlikely to appear blue. Blue moons in photos are usually created using special blue camera filters or photo editing applications.
When will this event happen again?
According to NASA, the next super blue moon will be visible in January 2037.
So we have to wait for many years to see this celestial sight again in the sky.
