Are you suffering from insomnia? Scientists: You may be sleeping more than you think

A simple tip is to “go to bed early.” But for many of us, going to bed earlier simply means more time moving from side to side. According to the American Medical Association, nearly 30 million Americans suffer from insomnia. The good news is that even if you feel like you spend half the night staring at the ceiling, you may actually be getting more sleep than you think.

Scientists: You may be sleeping more than you think

In a new study from the University of Montreal, researchers analyzed the sleep of 20 “good sleepers” to see how they perceived sleep quality based on their dreams.

“Dreams are not often studied in the context of sleep quality,” said Claudia Pickard-Deland, who led the study. We'll likely focus on objective measures like brain activity or sleep stages, but I think we also need to take a closer look at dream activity and how it affects how we perceive sleep.

In the as-yet-unpublished study, Pickard-DeLand and her team woke each participant 12 times a night and asked them whether they were awake or asleep, how deep their sleep was, what they had been thinking about recently, and how deeply asleep they were. They felt it in their dreams. At the same time, the researchers measured brain activity to determine whether they were actually asleep and where they were in their sleep cycle.

Surprisingly, participants often reported that they were awake when they were actually asleep. This was particularly common in the early stages of the dreamless sleep cycle.

As a woman who has suffered from insomnia all her life, Pickard-Deland said such research was crucial to reassuring people with insomnia. “It helped me see with my own eyes that the participants were asleep but felt conscious,” the researcher said.

Furthermore, the team hopes that their work will lay the foundation for improving sleep quality and dream training.
