A warning for China's economic heartland.  This condition occurs once every 50 years

As state broadcaster CCTV reported on Sunday, local authorities must prepare to protect the region's 127 million residents. Local weather services reported this Parts of the Xijiang and Beijiang rivers and their tributaries have swollen to once-in-50-year levels.

Guangdong Province in the south of the country, which is considered the leading economic center in China, has been witnessing heavy rains and strong winds for several days. A wave of heavy rain that lasted 12 hours and began on Saturday evening, local time, hit the central and northern parts of the region. Chinese state radio reported that more than 1,100 schools in Zhaoqing, Shaoguan and Qingyuan would suspend classes on Monday. The authorities in Qingyuan and Shaoguan also suspended ship navigation on several rivers.

In the Guangxi Autonomous Region neighboring Guangdong to the west, violent, tornado-like winds caused severe damage to buildings. Some places also witnessed heavy rains and severe flooding, CCTV reported. As of Sunday morning, 65 landslides had been reported in Hezhou City in Guangxi, state media reported.

Meteorological forecasts expect heavy rain to continue in the Guangxi region and the provinces of Guangdong, Fujian and Zhejiang throughout Monday.
