Two people have been injured in a stabbing at a museum of modern art in New York

Two women were stabbed to death Saturday inside the MoMA, New York’s prestigious Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, which has been evacuated, according to several sources, including police.

The two women, who sustained “back, neck and neck” injuries, were immediately hospitalized, “we were told they would be fine,” the New York City Police (NYPD) Assistant Commissioner of Intelligence and Counterterrorism said at the scene. ), John Miller.

The most-visited museum in New York, located in Midtown Manhattan, was evacuated shortly after the incident at 4:15 p.m. Police have set up a security ring and the museum will be closed Saturday, an AFP photographer at the scene said.

The suspect, who was not arrested on Saturday afternoon, was introduced by police as a regular visitor whose MoMA membership card had expired after two incidents at the museum.

When he refused to enter on Saturday, John Miller described how he “got angry (…) and jumped on the reception desk, attacked two museum staff and stabbed them several times”.

Many videos and photos posted on social networks or in the media showed visitors leaving the museum from the moment they left.

MoMA features masterpieces by Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol and Frida Kahlo.
