When we choose something today, we tend to read reviews and see what other people have to say about a service or a product. Usually, it works out, especially if a product is widespread and popular.

But how does one choose a company, a cleaning company in particular, if this company needs to be located in a particular area? Can you trust reviews? What to look at if there are no reviews on the company’s site or there are both good and bad ones?

Let’s explore the matter on the example of the search for a reliable cleaning service in Toronto.

  1. Toronto is huge in itself, and then there’s the Greater Toronto Area. If you look at the company’s website, check the specific area they serve. There’s no sense in making further inquiries if these people will not go to your house, to begin with.
  2. If your friends or relatives who live in the same area use cleaning services, ask them for referrals. They may point you to the company they use regularly and appreciate – or warn you against maid services that perform cleaning of substandard quality.
  3. If there are reviews on the company site, look at them critically. All goody-goody testimonies can be phony, written for cash by random people, or by the bored office team in exchange for a brief workplace cleanup. All bad reviews are a sign that you face a company that does not take the job seriously. But if there are reviews from happy customers and then there are some reviews with criticism (like the cleaners being somewhat late or breaking the cherished grandmother’s teapot while dusting the shelves), the high chances are the company is OK. No one can guarantee %100 glitch-free services, but these glitches should be minor.
  4. If we start talking about guarantees and possible damage, ask (or read) how the company will handle such situations. Will they compensate? Will they offer additional services as an apology? Or are you supposed to claim reimbursement under your insurance policy?
  5. Learn about their services. Do they offer a standard bundle only or can you order a custom cleaning (or simple window washing)? Definitely, it’s better to deal with a service that can match your particular requests. The matter of pets in the house needs to be clarified, too.
  6. Who will come to your house? Do they have a team of employees who are insured and trained or hire contractors from the street (sometimes literally)? Employees are better because they stay with the company longer and are supervised more carefully. They have more to lose while quitting, so they are motivated to work thoroughly and uphold the company’s reputation.
  7. Insurance, bonding, accreditation, affiliations. Yes, it matters. A company with a wide insurance policy, workers’ protection, and membership in big business associations and trade organizations has high standards of everything, including cleaning services and conflict settling. Such credentials also speak in favor of such a provider.
  8. Credentials of people they send to your house. How are these cleaners checked? How are they hired and what are guarantees to you? Surely, the company won’t disclose the whole hiring process, but they should tell enough for you to feel safe in the same room with cleaning workers.

If you think we put together an exaggerated list of requirements, think twice.
