Lizzie Enns, 36, of Ohio, grew up in the Swartzentruber Amish community, one of the more conservative subgroups of the ancient Amish sect. The people of her village refused to install sewage systems, had no bathrooms in their homes, traveled by horse-drawn carts, used only wood stoves for cooking and heating, and eschewed all modern conveniences. However, women had to wear dresses that reached the tops of their shoes.
