More than 40,000 Sosius Benfica took part in the elections, a record in the history of the famous club, which was founded in 1904. The 49-year-old Costa will take over as president until 2025.
The election, the results of which were announced by the club on Sunday, came just months after the resignation of former president Luis Felipe Vieira, 72, who ruled the club for a record 18 years, and who was investigated for tax fraud. and money laundering. Costa, who was vice-president of the club, assumed his duties in accordance with the statutes.
As a footballer, he represented Costa Benfica in 1991-94 and 2006-2008. He left Lisbon in 1994, after winning the championship, and before that the Portuguese Cup, and moved to Italy. He won the National Cup twice with Fiorentina, and with Milan – the European Cup and the First Division.
A few days after the end of his career in the field, at the age of 36, he was elected sporting director of Benfica.
In the national team he played 94 matches and scored 26 goals. He left playing for the national team after winning the silver medal at the 2004 European Championships.
