Since the spring, there has been a sharp increase in the number of attempts to cross the border illegally by migrants from the Middle East, Africa and other regions on the borders of Belarus with Lithuania, Latvia and Poland. The European Union and its member states believe that this is the result of deliberate actions by the Belarusian authorities in response to the sanctions. Minsk denies the accusations.

From September 2, due to immigration pressure in the border region with Belarus – at 183 district locations in the Podlasie and Lublin regions – a state of emergency is in force.
