Xbox Series S resolution drops to up to 454p. Analysis of the game confirms the presence of major problems

It's been over three years since the premiere of current generation consoles. In addition to the release of standard hardware, Microsoft also decided to prepare Xbox, which will allow you to try new generation solutions for less money. As it turns out, this sometimes comes at the cost of huge graphical compromises. New analysis from Digital Foundry underscores the console's big problems.

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons is a remake of the 2013 story. Avantgarden Studio has prepared a major update for the production, which features much better graphics. The creators also changed the engine from Unreal Engine 3 to Unreal Engine 5, allowing them to use modern solutions like Lumen and nanite. These technologies, among others, cause in-game issues on current consoles, but the Xbox Series S is the worst.

The game offers two modes of play: Precision and Performance mode. Let's start with the first. Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons uses image reconstruction that is supposed to give us the impression of a higher 4K resolution, but in reality, the numbers are lower. On PS5 and XSX, we get an average resolution of 1440p at 30fps. However, the S Series has major problems, as in addition to worse graphics settings, the resolution on this console drops to values between 454p-720p. In quality mode, the console will often stick to this upper limit.

However, the situation is terrible in performance mode. On PS5 and XSX, the resolution drops to 1080p, but we don't get a consistent 60 frames per second. Instead, smoothness typically ranges from 45 to 60 frames per second. The Series The performance mode on the Series S looks really bad. The resolution remains in the same range as in quality mode, but most of the time it drops to the lower bounds, i.e. 454p. In addition, the benefits in terms of additional frames per second are small. The game holds 60 FPS in very few cases. However, it is worth noting that we still use nanites and lumens.

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons is another case that confirms that current consoles (especially the S series) have major problems with the technologies found in the Epic Games engine. Even in games like Brothers. Although the graphics are much better than the original version, the physics remain at the same level. Digital Foundry recommends playing in resolution mode, unless you have a monitor that supports VRR.
