Italy: The Leaning Tower in Bologna may collapse. The Italians will spend millions of euros

The Bologna authorities will spend more than four million euros to save one of its symbols – the Garicenda, one of the two adjacent towers. In Italy, there have long been fears that the leaning building dating back to the 12th century could collapse.

Bologna authorities will spend 4.3 million euros on work to strengthen the tower’s structure, which is scheduled to begin in February. Italian services maintain a so-called yellow alert. This means that you have to be careful with them.

City Mayor Mateo Lepore noted that Garicinda has been leaning since its construction and “has been a cause for concern ever since.” The tower suffered additional damage in the Middle Ages, when iron structures and bakery ovens were built inside.

– Over the centuries the situation has turned into a serious problem. And we inherited it – admitted the mayor, who asked the Italian government to include this tower and the tower next to it on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The Leaning Tower of Bologna began to shake

The Garisenda’s deviation from the vertical is four degrees – the same level as the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Various types of works have been taking place around the building since the 1990s, and now experts will focus on creating a special area around it so that in the event of a possible collapse of the ancient structure, nearby buildings will be protected and the safety of passersby will be guaranteed.

At the end of October, the street surrounding the memorial was closed because sensors placed on the building detected vibrations. This indicates that the tower began to shake.

Garicinda is the shorter of the two towers built between 1109 and 1119. Initially it was 60 meters high, but its tilt shortened it by about 10 metres. The height of the Ascinella Towers is 97 metres.

The Associated Press pointed out that the towers were a symbol of the city from the moment they were built and a source of inspiration for writers and poets. Garicinda is mentioned, among others, by Dante Alighieri in the Divine Comedy.
