The original version of Shrek from 1995

On the YouTube channelZoom Art Studio“A clip has been published in which we can see the original idea of an animated ghoul. The clip was posted online by Barry Jackson, the animator who worked on the original version of Shrek and is one of the creators of the 1995 test material for studio Dreamworks.

In an interview that can be seen on the same channel, Jackson explains that the film is closer to a version of Shrek than the original book by William Steig. The animator describes this incarnation of the animated ghoul as “dark” and “edgy.”

The test video was supposed to give producers a preview of Shrek’s personality type and prove that the hero works well within computer animation conventions. This technology was not standard at the time. Jackson points out that the animation of Shrek’s face in his clip is impressive for its time and more advanced than it was in the first Toy Story film

One of the creators of Shrek’s character design was famed comic book artist Mike Ploog (co-creator of, among others, Marvel Comics’ Ghost Rider character). Shrek was supposed to be voiced by comedian Chris FarleySo the actor was inspired to some extent by animators (Farley died in 1997).

But the clip convinced the producers to soften Shrek’s character. They weren’t sure if this version of the anti-hero could be a hit.
