In Baden-Württemberg, a 26-year-old caregiver from Poland was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of an 89-year-old woman he was caring for. The regional court in Freiburg im Breisgau found the man guilty of murder in connection with the robbery, a court spokesman said. According to the judges, it was proven that the accused, who caught the woman stealing, hit her with his fist several times, causing her serious injuries. A few days later, the 89-year-old died in hospital.
A 26-year-old man had been living since the beginning of October 2022 as a carer in the home of an elderly couple in Herpolzheim in Baden-Württemberg. In late October, a woman surprised him when he tried to hide her jewelry. When the 89-year-old woman called the police, the man punched her several times in the face and head.
Murder by greed
Taking into account the man’s actions, the court found that the defendant at least expected the woman’s death. About fifteen minutes after calling the police, he locked the unconscious old woman in the boiler room. Officers later found her and took her to hospital, where she died a week later from a brain hemorrhage.
According to the Criminal Chamber, there were elements of murder motivated by greed. Moreover, at the time of the commission of the act, the accused, although highly intoxicated, was not significantly impaired of mind. The Chamber also ruled out, based on forensic psychiatry experience, the possibility of mental illness.
After pre-trial detention, the accused initially remained in a psychiatric hospital until mid-April. He has been in pretrial detention since April 18 on a temporary arrest warrant. The court’s ruling is not final.
