Von der Leyen calls for cooperation for Ukraine

The European Union’s goal must be to achieve a stable and just peace in Ukraine, not to freeze the conflict. Although the war with Ukraine represents a strategic defeat for Russian President Vladimir Putin, it did not automatically turn into a victory for Ukraine. The announcement was made on Monday 6 November by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, at the EU Ambassadors’ Conference in Brussels. She pointed to three main goals that the European Union must achieve.

Three goals of the European Union

The first goal must be to continue working for a just and lasting peace, not to freeze the conflict. No one wants peace as much as the Ukrainian people. The main way to achieve this is the peace formula proposed by President Zelensky. (…) I ask you all to continue working together to gain greater support for the peace formula in the countries of the world. I know it’s not easy, I know it’s hard work, but in the end, the whole world will benefit. This should be our main mission, she said.

Second, according to von der Leyen, Ukraine needs long-term security.

We must ensure a stable military force capable of protecting Ukraine and deterring future Russian aggression. So that history does not repeat itself. This of course has serious consequences for our defense industry. We need to increase production capacity. (…) We must take into account air defence, which is very important now, naval capabilities, but of course, in the medium and long term, also cyber and space capabilities.

Third, according to Ursula von der Leyen, the best way to ensure Ukraine’s stability and prosperity in the medium and long term is membership in the European Union.
