AMD Ryzen 7 7840U – Upcoming Phoenix APU performs better than Ryzen 9 6980HX in first test

A few days ago we discussed the first information about the low voltage AMD Ryzen 5 7640U processor. It was also proof that the manufacturer is already working on more APUs than the Phoenix. Suddenly, a few days later, traces of another processor appeared on the Internet, this time the 8-core AMD Ryzen 7 7840U. Its performance is optimistic, especially against the background of the Rembrandt generation APU with a higher power limit.

AMD Ryzen 7 7840U processor tested in Cinebench R23. Its results are better than the top model of Rembrandt’s generation APU i.e. Ryzen 9 6980HX.

The AMD Phoenix-U series of low-voltage processors has slowly begun to grow. After the 6-core, 12-thread Ryzen 5 7640U, it’s time for the 8-core, 16-thread Ryzen 7 7840U. Information about this appeared on the Chinese website Weibo with the annotation that the tested laptop belongs to the Lenovo brand (although there is no specific information about the model name). This processor has been tested in Cinebench R23. As for the specs, it looks like the Ryzen 7 7840U will run with a base clock of 3.3GHz. That’s 500MHz lower than the Ryzen 7 7840HS (3.8GHz). Turbo clock is unknown, but we do know that the TDP factor is up to 15W, with the possibility of increasing it to 28W, as it was in the previous generation.

AMD Ryzen 5 7640U – Low Voltage APU Phoenix-U in first test is clearly more powerful than Ryzen 5 6600U

Only the multithreaded score was posted on the web – the Ryzen 7 7840U scored exactly 14,825 here. This is a better score than the AMD Ryzen 7 6800H from our results database. We remind you that the Rembrandt processor in the ASUS ROG Strix G15 laptop with a power limit of up to 90 W scored 14279 points in the same test. In contrast, the AMD Ryzen 9 6900HS scored with a slightly lower score of 13,791 points. according to WCCFTechThe Ryzen 7 7840U also fared better than the previous generation’s top model — the Ryzen 9 6980HX — whose Cinebench R23 Multi score reached 14,700 points. It seems that the new Zen 4 APU with a lower minimum power limit will be able to achieve better results compared to the previous generation, as it operates at much higher power limits. Added to this is a more efficient Radeon 780M (RDNA 3) integrated graphics card.
