What is the movie “Ghosts of Inisherin”?

Ghosts of Inisherin tells the story of two friends who have known each other since birth: Pádraica (Colin Farrell) and Colm (Brendan Gleeson). The film takes place on a picturesque island located west of the coast of Ireland. One day, the guys’ friendship is in jeopardy when Colm unexpectedly decides to end it. Amazed, Pádraic tries at all costs to understand what happened and to restore contact with his old friend. He is supported in his efforts by his sister Siobhán (Kerry Condon) and young acquaintance Dominik (Barry Keoghan). Unfortunately, all of Pádraic’s efforts are unsuccessful, and an unfazed Colm becomes more and more determined to end the unwanted relationship. Colm’s despondent ultimatum follows a chain of shocking events from which there is no turning back.

As we wrote in our report from the Venice Festival: Although the film’s plot is set in a specific place and era (the 1920s), “Ghosts” has something of a fairy tale or folk legend. While the War of Independence rages on the neighboring island, the Inisherin community lives its own life, the cheerful rhythm of which is marked by visits to the tavern and church. Ascetic architecture combined with the overwhelmingly beautiful Irish nature is the perfect backdrop for the universal ideal of unity. The director – who has been under the crushing influence of Samuel Beckett since the beginning of his career – once again mixes tears, laughter and the macabre to tell the story of the trap of human existence. And although he avoids sentimentality, he manages to strike sensitive nerves more than once.
