A solution to free doctors

To reduce the burden on doctors, specialist nurse interns (IPS) look after patients who no longer require intensive care, who are waiting for a place in a residential center in the geriatric unit of Valleyfield’s Choroid Hospital in Monterrey.

Tuesday, they have 36 beds in the unit 12 in this situation. Patients with this condition have an average hospital stay of 25 to 40 days.

“I have lung cancer, and then I had a pulmonary embolism, and I caught Covid with all of that,” explained patient Rose-Mai Boisclaire.

These IPSs look after them during their on-call periods which last for a week.

“This is a very innovative program, and we’re the first in Quebec. If the patient is stable throughout his stay here, it’s really self-care by IPS. The doctor is not interrogated at any level. If the patient deteriorates, IPS welcomes the doctor on duty,” said nurse Annabel Rioux. said.

Isabelle Hubert was the first IPS to participate in the program.

“We have time to review their pharmacology, their list of medications. Often, they improve, we reassess, and sometimes we find an environment that’s easier to find because they’re less burdensome in terms of loss of autonomy.

The project, which has been gradually implemented over the past four years, is now attracting the interest of other CISSSs and CIUSSSs in Quebec.
