“There should be no trace”

The previous Polish nominee for an Oscar in this category was Jan P. Matuszyński’s film Leave No Traces, whose world premiere took place in September at the Venice Film Festival.

Based on a report by Cesare Azariewicz, this is a story about high school graduate Grzegorz Przemyk, son of dissident poet Barbara Sadowska, who was badly beaten by police officers in May 1983 and died a few days later. The only witness to the beating was his friend Juric Popiel, who decided to fight for justice in court. The authorities tried to hold ambulance medics responsible for the crime.

In order to make this version credible, the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Polish United Workers Party appointed a special team to clarify the matter. In fact, it dealt with surveillance, paramedic intimidation, and extortion of false statements.
