The 25-year-old Polish joined the doubles tournament in Rome alongside Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov. Their opponents were Croatian Ivan Dodig and American Austin Krajesek. And it was his first confrontation with Hurkacz in the Italian capital, because he will not play in the singles tournament until Tuesday, when his Belgian opponent is David Goffin.
The doubles match began abruptly – although the Polish and the Bulgarian won the first match, they lost five more, including two with a pass. Most of these games took place very quickly, and Hurkacz and Demetro didn’t have much of a fight to win.
Only in the seventh game they managed to break the bad streak and cut their losses, but in the next match Dodig and Krajicek scored their goal and finished the match with a score of 6: 2. The set lasted only 31 minutes.
The Polish and the Bulgarian showed a much better position in the second set, quickly sealing the match in their favour with each of their passes. However, their problem was that they could not break the service of their opponents.
The party went off quickly and without too much fuss. After nearly 45 minutes the score was 6:6, which meant a tie in the second half. In it, the Poles started better with the Bulgarian – they broke their opponents in the second measure. They later repeated this feat in a sixth move, leading to the score 5-1. They quickly missed this advantage, but in the end Hurkacz and Dimitro won the set, winning the tiebreak 7-5.
Therefore, the winners were determined by the super inning played up to 10 points. Already the first time, the Polish and the Bulgarian smashed their rivals, which gave them an advantage at the start. Later, both pairs scored another break, which put Hurkacz and Dimitrów in a better position. In the end, they won 10-6, which gave them promotion to the second round.
