Grammy Award: 'I disturbed my cats when I won!'

Quebec host Yannick Nézet-Séguin said he wanted to win the trophy, despite saying he was “not much associated with the awards”.

“When we compose music, we do a lot to interact with people, to be in concert halls and to know that people are listening to our recordings,” he said in an interview with LCN.

“But this Grammy, because it’s a special for composer Florence Price, unfortunately in his lifetime he did not get the recognition he deserved. I wanted this trophy. I screamed so loudly, I disturbed my cats when I won!”


The musician considers his gift to be “the first Grammy of the Florence Prize” above all else.

“At the beginning of the 20th century, she said to herself: I have two disabilities, my gender and my race. Unfortunately, she’s right, because after playing with the best bands of her life, after her death, her works fell into oblivion,” he says.

“It simply came to our notice then. There are other cases, such as the Florence Price. And it’s important that a leading band like Philadelphia adjusts (the situation) and amplifies its voice, ”concludes the conductor of the Metropolitan Orchestra.
