The company announced that it has discontinued the service in Ukraine, and has therefore taken steps to protect the safety of local communities in that country. This was to happen after consultations with the Ukrainian authorities, including regional and local authorities.

The fact that the Russians installed Google Maps in their tanks and other military vehicles was known even before the invasion of Ukraine, which took place on Thursday, February 24. A few days earlier, Google Maps showed a large number of traffic on local roads in Russia and Belarus. Military poles passed through them and the devices installed in them gave signals to the Google algorithm about traffic jams in this place.

“You don’t need a lot of money and intelligence services when you have Google Maps. In the 21st century, every soldier has a phone in a tank, so you can basically track the movements of any military unit.” Estonian journalist Ronald Live noted on social media.
