In a recent interview, Tom Hanks admitted that he did not fully agree with the vision of the director of “Forrest Gump.” As the actor said, during the filming, he believed that the scenes on the bench – which became an important plot element and entered the history of cinema – were redundant.

“Forrest Gump” can be linked to a poster from a movie, a scene in which the title character plays or one of the first shots in which the famous phrase is uttered: “My mother said, life is like a box of chocolates: You never know what’s going to happen to you.”

The entire plot is based on two parallel timelines: the current schedule, where Gump sits on a park bench and tells each random person his story and his memories. It turns out that while filming the movie, Hanks had a lot of skepticism about the bench sequence. He considered them unnecessary and did not understand how they were supposed to catch the viewer’s attention and become part of this unusual story.

—I have to admit that all of the scenes we shot on a park bench in Savannah, Georgia, were simply cast as movie junk for their narrative use — the actor admitted years later in an interview with Film Service Cinema Blend.

Hanks revealed that he considered them unnecessary during filming, even asking director Robert Zemeckis why these scenes, who cares about some craziness sitting on a park bench with a chest you don’t know what’s inside.

– We finished filming this footage, only 13 pages of dialogues, recorded over a day and a half. Finally, Bob came to me and said, I don’t know, Tom; It’s such a shaky floor, the actor recalls, that you never know what people will get out of it.

Zemeckis was right. Although he wasn’t able to completely dispel the star’s doubts and didn’t know how to fit into the movie scene, in the end it turned out to be one of the most memorable parts of the movie, connecting the entire plot.

In this seemingly useless shot, one of the most famous sentences in cinema history is uttered, the silhouette of Gump sitting on a bench that appeared on the poster promoting the film.
