Exactly: Lindy’s story is very believably written—and also in the context of the impact of her diagnosis on her health. Even some of her reckless and unreasonable behavior is relevant to her age and the issues she’s faced. “Mismatch” depicts a series of realistic coping mechanisms that often make things worse. Maddie Ziegler not only embraces this difficult role, but brings a dimension of conflicting emotions that is ultimately chaotic and compelling. Plus, the other young actors do a great job, even if they seem a bit mature visually for their age.
The festival’s “Nonconformity” (which debuted under the title “Bloody Hell”) skips scientific lectures about the disease. Instead, it uses them to examine the assumptions and expectations of contemporary femininity. In a restrained, non-prescriptive form, it reminds us that there is room in nature for many variations in sexual and gender norms, no matter how hard some people try to challenge them. It also adds that in the modern world, honest conversations and educating ourselves about local topics should be an integral part of adolescence.
At the same time, the film educates both Linda and the audience in several entertaining ways – destigmatizing certain gynecological issues and selling a few “nose pins”… to health care representatives. And it does so with class.
