Elden Ring collects more Game of the Year statues, and Software From Software has officially claimed more of these particular accolades than The Last of Us Part II. Naughty Dog has held the record since 2020.
In 2015, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt came out, collecting as many as 281 GOTY awards. In the following years, the market was conquered by such products as Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End (2016, 190 GOTY), The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (2017, 264 GOTY), God of War (2018, 263 GOTY), Death Stranding (2019, 118 GOTY) and only The Last of Us Part II (2020, 322 GOTY) beat that score. It didn’t come close to that score (86 GOTY), which is the biggest hit of 2021.
According to the latest player accounts and Game of the Year award tracker – Elden Ring is already proud of having 324 GOTY Awards. It’s possible that the software title could improve on this score, but recent data confirms that the title fared better than The Last of Us Part II.
Elden Ring was voted the best game of the year by 281 editorial offices and 43 times by readers. For comparison, The Last of Us Part II received 208 GOTY from journalists and 114 GOTY from gamers.
This is certainly an interesting record, which will be difficult to beat in the coming years – in 2023, items such as Starfield, Spider-Man 2 or The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will debut on the market, but a large backlog may cause Potential strikes, which are limited to certain platforms, cause the statuettes to be spread out over several places.
