The adoption of the sixth package of planned EU sanctions against Russia would be a historic disaster, as Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban assessed in a letter to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The content of the message was submitted on Thursday by the Index.hu portal.
“Neither Hungary nor the European Union as a whole is willing to accept and implement the measures proposed by the Commission. Sanctions can be adopted if all necessary conditions are met in all member states,” Orban Index.hu quotes on the basis of speech excerpts published by the Financial Times.
As Orban emphasized, the European Commission cannot create a situation in which sanctions could harm Hungary more than Russia.
According to the Hungarian head of government, the adoption of the proposed sanctions will require a significant development of the infrastructure for supplying energy resources and a comprehensive reconstruction of the refinery system. According to him, these projects require time and investments that cannot be financed on a level playing field.
The Hungarian Prime Minister also noted that energy prices have already reached their highest value in 40 years, and that sanctions will lead to a further increase, placing the burden on the poorest.
As he added, So far, unity has been the EU’s greatest value in response to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. In his opinion, the sixth package of sanctions will undermine this unity.
Von der Leyen said on Wednesday that The European Commission is proposing, among other things, a complete ban on imports of Russian oil; Crude oil imports will be completed within six months and refined products by the end of the year. Let’s be clear, it won’t be easy, because some member states are very dependent on Russian oil, but we simply have to do it. (…](Russian President Vladimir) Putin must pay a heavy price for his brutal aggression (against Ukraine – PAP) – I confirmed.
