New research on the Shroud of Turin. Scientists have announced startling results.

The Shroud of Turin has been one of the most mysterious and studied artifacts in the world for centuries. As The Telegraph reports, the painting first appeared in 1350, and in 1389 it was recognized as a fake by Bishop Pierre d’Arcis of Troyes. Controversial research in the 1980s dated the Shroud to 1260-1390, suggesting it was a medieval hoax. However, the cloth stored in the Church of St. John the Baptist in Turin continues to intrigue scholars.

Recent research using X-rays suggests that the shroud’s linen threads may date back to the time of Jesus. However, the findings, published in the journal Heritage, do not definitively confirm that the painting is of Christ, but only that it was created nearly 2,000 years ago.

The researchers’ conclusions suggest that previous analyses may have been distorted by contaminants. The researchers noted that cellulose in the fibers had been aging more slowly since the 14th century due to cooler temperatures in European interior environments. This means that most of the aging signs in the fabric occurred before 1300.
