- In 1974, Poland’s Kazimierz Gorski team won with a sensational score of 3:2 against Argentina in the first match of the World Cup after goals from Grzegorz Lata and Andrzej Szarmach. Henryka Kasperczak was a midfielder on that team. “It happened half a century ago … but I would like to repeat it,” says Kasperchak.
- According to the former football player and later coach, Henryk Kasperczak, the Polish national team in the match against Argentina could not play a draw. “Players have to go out on the field to win,” says Kasperczak.

GRZEGORZ RUDYNEK: Would we welcome a replay of the Poles’ first match at the 1974 World Cup?
HENRYK KASPERCZAK (former representative of Poland, participant in the match Poland – Argentina 3:2 of 1974): Gee, that was almost half a century ago… But of course I hope we beat Argentina too, it doesn’t have to be 3-2 like then. There are different variables that we progress according to. I will stick to it, from start to finish, self-reliant, win-win.
We have two completely different matches behind us: a realistic match against Mexico (0:0) and a better match against Saudi Arabia (2:0).
Mexico was within our reach, I think we went into this match as favourites, and the bad taste remained. We defeated Saudi Arabia according to the plan, but the plan was before the tournament. After all, after meeting with Argentina, we were positively surprised by the game of the Saudis. That is why it is so much fun to beat them. Now we have the hardest game ahead and I want us to play it like Saudi Arabia. It could be 3:2…
The rest of the conversation is below the video…
Should we play the same squad as the Saudis? With Robert Lewandowski and Arkadiusz Milik up front?
It is said that the winning combination does not change. I will do the same on Wednesday. In my opinion, in the preparation that we saw in the meeting with the Saudis, we presented ourselves better than in the confrontation with Mexico. There was more creativity, and the game was more offensive. This is the trend we are seeing in the World Cup. What is important is: technique, speed, dynamics. We were more dynamic in the second game. These items must be preserved. For this, there must be the right mental attitude. Players must go out onto the field to win. There is nothing to count here, we are first in the group and to keep it you have to win.
But someone will say that this is the great Argentina, Messi, and therefore you have to approach the game with caution and defense.
You shouldn’t think that way. You can’t count on a draw. We have to play normally, in order to win like we did against Saudi Arabia. We created the game, came out with the ball and created chances because there is still the post and the crossbar.
Argentina does not look as strong as before the tournament.
In the first match, the Argentines failed. Perhaps they expected it to be easy, light and fun, and we see that all teams, including Asian or African ones, want to match the best. These teams have made a lot of progress and the Argentines have seen it. On Monday we saw how Cameroon played a great match against Serbia (3: 3), and Ghana advanced in the meeting with South Korea (leading 2: 0, the Asians tied, but Ghana won 3: 2 – opening note). Earlier, Morocco beat Belgium (2:0). So let’s believe in ourselves, let’s play to beat Argentina, which is unbeatable.
In the match against Saudi Arabia, Wojciech Szczecin did a great job on goal.
He showed that he is in good shape and defended very well in the match against Mexico. We have a great goalkeeper, and a goalkeeper like that is essential in a team, especially on set pieces, when a goalkeeper has so much room to show off. Well done Wojtek, keep playing like this.
There were long debates about why Pyotr Zelensky’s play in the national team was so unbalanced. It works fine in Qatar.
Apparently, the place that Czeslav Micniewicz bet on in the match against Saudi Arabia suits him. He played better than not, finished a difficult situation well and scored a goal. But who knows if Milik’s choice to play alongside Lewandowski was more important. This is the duo that has guaranteed us the best results in recent years. Now you also have to focus on those who please. Four defenders, four midfielders and two strikers – this has to go on.
In the first half of the match against Saudi Arabia, we got three yellow cards in a few minutes. It was supposed to be red.
Sometimes you have to play harder, especially when the opponent demands, like the Saudis. They relied on speed, and sometimes we were late on the save and there were mistakes. You have to be careful with the cards, but when there is a fight, it is inevitable.
A potential win over Argentina could build the team up in strength ahead of the next matches.
Each victory adds confidence, but the defeat of an opponent in this category is much more important. Not only Argentina, I am one of the teams that can reach the final. And back in 1974… Just as we can eliminate Argentina from the tournament now, we eliminated Italy then, beating them 2-1 in the last match.
In 1974, the match against Argentina started, catapulting me into the unknown. She made her World Championship debut, the first match being against a strong opponent.
We had a databank run by Jacek Gmoch, so we knew a little bit about the competitor. However, you only get the full picture when you are in the game live, and then you do the analysis. The deeper you go into the water, the more you know.
And if you score two goals at the start of the match, as you did against Argentina in 1974, your wings are getting bigger.
Of course, every match is about scoring a goal and enjoying it. And to please the fans, why would they come to the match? to see naked.
