I watched the movie “The Phenomenon” about the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity and Osiac. not a massive review]

“The Phenomenon” is a documentary whose premiere coincides with the 30th anniversary of the Great Christmas Charity Orchestra. We’ll see where it all started, lots of great archival material, and the creators haven’t lost sight of difficult topics related to eg. With hatred for Jurek Osiak or the murder of Bowie Adamovich. Contrary to the title, the movie itself isn’t massive, but it can move and offer a lot of interesting facts.

  • The Great Christmas Charity Orchestra has been playing for 30 years. So this is the perfect opportunity to sum it up.
  • Phenomenon, directed by Małgorzata Kowalczyk, takes us back to the birth of the entire event, and even a little earlier. We look, among other things, behind the scenes of the Do What You Want program, which Jurik Osiak was showing at the time with novice journalist and presenter Agata Młynarska.
  • We can see how the Great Christmas Charity Orchestra has developed over the years and what impact it has on Poland. We go back to more recent times, where the theme conceptualization of Jurik Osiak and the orchestra has also changed.
  • The documentary “The Phenomenon” can already be seen in cinemas, and this year’s Christmas Charity Orchestra Grand Final will take place on January 29.

I read comments online where people ask, “I wonder if this documentary will be objective?”. It’s hard to be objective Documentary about the Great Orchestra for Christmas Charity and Jorek Osiak – the man who did more for Poland than many politicians have done. You can go get a card, but does the Great Charity Christmas Orchestra need one? However, given the events of recent years, this seems to be the case and it is necessary to recall it.

You can also force pins, because negative emotions sell better. However, it will not be a document, but a satire for fun Bunch of haters calling Jurek Osiak “devilish”. This is why the documentary “The Phenomenon” tries not to be a promotional video for the Great Christmas Charity Orchestra, but to show a great part of recent Polish history – along with its less amusing elements.

So we get a lot of heart-wrenching stories and recordings, but also this whole pelvis that goes over the orchestra and its conductor. Because every fairy tale, even the one that really happened, must also contain dark threads.

“Phenomena” isn’t just a pretty card for the Charity Christmas Orchestra. There are also some bitter moments in it.

So there’s the famous video of a York Osiac running to the table looking for a pitcher, and recordings of phone calls from Radio Marija listeners, as well as bitter thoughts about Assassination of President Bawe Adamovich 2019 and the circumstances of this tragedy. However, we will not see her in the movie “mother hen”, statements from the Foundation’s account or interviews with opponents of the Great Charity Christmas Orchestra. Just 10 years ago, no one would have thought about such aspects, but times are changing. And this is just sad.

Watching the “phenomenon”, we are tormented by different feelings. Fortunately, there are definitely more positives. The most disarming are the recordings from the beginnings of the gang war of the Great Charity Christmas Orchestra, when people, for example, brought bags with money counted in millions of zlotys to the TV studio, because the sect had yet to come.

Fans of ancient climates will also appreciate parts of the program “do what you want” Or old movies in general with the crazy Jurek Owsiak. An inconspicuous guest who spontaneously caused a popular uprising, brought colors to the then gray reality and fashion to help. Then the lyrics “Because all Poles are one family” sounded pretty much right. Like the “Once upon a time” text.

There’s no denying that the Great Christmas Charity Orchestra is a real phenomenon – over the course of 30 years it has raised PLN 1.75 billion and purchased tens of thousands of devices that can be found in hospitals across discerning-hearted Poland. It is also phenomenal in how it has united us over the years and taught us how to help others. It is a pity that he has changed radically lately.

“The Phenomenon” is a medium documentary on important topics. It is worth watching mainly for archival recordings

This is the main message of the documentary The Phenomenon, which as a documentary itself is mediocre at best. Especially if we were to see it in the cinema – I would see it more in the style of quirky and very interesting and varied programs with Osiac from the nineties, because it would reflect the spirit of this whole mission. In this version, traditional speech heads are intertwined with old video materials.

The film is also very disorganized, and some leads or phrases seem to get us nothing, as they are obvious and widely known – especially those related to recent events. The beginning of the documentary is also a little disgusting, because it is not entirely clear what we will deal with – the story of a British journalist about what he is doing in Poland and how he saw him after the conversion, or the history of the Great Orchestra of Charity Christmas.

Most of the stuff in the movie can be found on Wikipedia. It does not change the fact that it is good to see it in video form and listen to the tales, for example Jurek Owsiak, Agata Młynarska or Walter Chistowsky. Some interesting facts about the origins of the name, the logo, the musical theme, or why the final was held in January might surprise most viewers anyway.

There is also a section dedicated to childbirth Woodstock stops, although there is not enough about the festival itself. And I’m very curious about how all this is organized on such a large scale. However, I would prefer to see him in a separate movie, because it would be impossible to describe an unscripted event with foreign stars, which sometimes gathers a million-strong crowd in front of the stage.

A documentary about the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity and Jurek Owsiak can already be seen in cinemas

Ironically, Jurik Osiak is the least of all of this. I realize this is not his autobiography, but WOŚP = Owsiak. Anyway, it appears for about 3/4 of the movie, we learn a lot about the orchestra’s finals, but not what its co-creator does in the remaining 364 days of the year, because it’s very private, without directed statements.

Yes, the Great Christmas Charity Orchestra is his life, but he’s probably more than that guy in the red glasses collecting money for the kids. He’s also an ordinary guy with flaws, but we only hear about them when a scandal breaks out – against him or because of him He says what he thinks. Sometimes I feel like he’s a distant family member – I’ve always watched him on TV, but I don’t know anything about him.

“The Phenomenon” isn’t an “extraordinary” documentary, but it is the first of its kind about the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity, so we don’t even have anything to compare it to. Supporters of Mr. Jurek, WOŚP and the festival will still be having a great time and moving, learning a bit about the movement, reminiscing about its beginnings and Poland in general in the 90’s. It would also remind us of what was going on around him, because all these ridiculous scandals and unpleasant things obscured the true picture of the act.
