– I will return to Poland – this was the message from Mateusz Bonnetka, who terminated the contract with the Russian Zenit St. Petersburg.

“The club and the player decided to terminate the contract by mutual agreement. Thank you Matthews for everything” – wrote the Russian club in social media.

It’s been very hot around Matthews Bonnetka in recent days. Let’s remember that Zenit St Petersburg announced on Monday the return of five players to the club from Russia: four Americans and Poneka.

They are all back in the squad after – as the club said in a press release – a “short break”. Basketball players have already played in the match against CSKA Moscow in the VTB League, which Zenit lost 78:79.

In view of the Russian aggression against Ukraine a storm broke out on the network. The decision of the pole, the captain of our national team, was heavily criticized. Next spoke, among others Maciej Zelensky and Marcin Gortat. Both did not leave Ponitka dry, and demanded explanations, while others demanded that it be immediately removed from the frame.

– I was sad because people judge so quickly and so hard. It is convenient to judge everything from the perspective of the sofa, but we don’t really know what it is like in Russia. Even I do not know all the facts, I know more, said ukasz Koszarek, sporting director of the Polish team, who once played with Ponitka in one club.

Ponitka – who we reported on at WP SportoweFakty previously – didn’t want to go back to Russia. He was forced to do so because he was on a 3-year contract (signed prior to this season). The money involved was too large for European conditions (and potential suspension).

At first, the Russians did not agree to an amicable termination of the contract, but in the end an agreement was reached with Zenit. how? Did Poneka have to pay anything? Do not yet know the details shrouded in mystery. That will be announced next week, when the basketball player takes part in the press conference.

“Next week he will speak officially for the first time, he will be available to the media, and the press conference will be broadcast,” the Polish national team’s account on Twitter said.

It is worth noting that Mateusz Bonnetka has been playing in Russia since 2018. His first club was Lokomotiv Kuban Krasnodar, and later he moved to Zenit Saint Petersburg. This season, he was the captain of the team, playing an important role in the team led by Xavier Pascual. Let us remind you that Zenit has been discontinued by the Euroleague authorities. Now he only plays matches in the VTB League.
