Corona virus, omicron. Virologist: It will take about 10 years for SARS-CoV-2 to move into the seasonal virus

The SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus is irregular and unpredictable. Other variables will appear, and the transition to the seasonal virus will likely take about 10 years, said Agnieszka Szuster-Ciesielska Professor of Virology from the Department of Virology and Immunology at Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin.

In an interview with PAP, the professor said she would “be cautious in predictions” regarding the evolution of SARS-CoV-2 toward a milder form.

The evolution of viruses is not so fast, we only have two years of the epidemic. Omicron is just another type of SARS-CoV-2 that has these and no other properties. She explained that the coronaviruses that caused colds in the distant past also jumped from animals to humans, and it took a long time for them to adapt to the human host.

Szuster-Ciesielska: SARS-CoV-2 is unpredictable and unpredictable

According to Szuster-Ciesielska, “It will take about 10 years for SARS-CoV-2 to move toward the seasonal virus that causes flu-like symptoms.” The expert noted that some experts, such as Professor Krzysztof Berry of the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, claim that it may take longer.

“Basic changes to the virus, such as the omicron variant, may render the virus ineffective, that is, it does not effectively recognize host cells,” she added. – However, this happened in this case. She stressed that this demonstrates the enormous resilience of these microorganisms.

– The fact that such a version has appeared does not mean that the next version will be milder. Of course, I would like that to happen. However, we do not know how it will be, because SARS-CoV-2 is unpredictable and unpredictable – said Szuster-Ciesielska.

Szuster-Ciesielska: The emergence of new variants is inevitable

In her opinion, “unfortunately, more variants will emerge.” For RNA-containing viruses such as coronaviruses, it is almost inevitable. Some of them will take advantage of the infection and escape the immune response more effectively. In turn, other changes may lead to loss of infection and thus elimination of this variant. She said it was a natural choice.
