On Saturday, eighth seed Hurkashz (12 in the ATP rankings) beat Australian Alexei Popyrin 6:1, 7:5. Tiafoe on this stage defeated fellow countryman Sebastian Korda 6:0, 6:4.
Hurkacz has competed with Tiafoe three times so far and managed to win once – in 2019 at Winston-Salem, in the tournament that brought Wrocław his first title of his career. In 2018, the two-time winner – in Washington and at the “Young” Masters – was an American.
The highest-ranked Polish tennis player in the doubles competition wrapped up Friday in the first round. Together with Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassim they lost to Rohan Bubana of India and Canadian Denis Shapovalov 1: 6, 6: 2, 4-10.
