Astronomers have discovered an Earth-like planet in the habitable zone

The newly discovered planet has been designated TOI 700 e. It is located in the habitable zone of its star TOI 700. A habitable zone is the region in space that extends around a star – on planets in this zone there can be chemical and physical conditions that allow life to emerge, maintain, and evolve.

TOI 700 e orbits its star in just 28 days, TOI 700 d needs 37 days. “If the star were a little closer, or the planet a little bigger, we might have seen TOI 700 e in the first year of TESS collecting the data,” said Dr. Ben Hurd of the University of Maryland. But the signal was so weak that it took an additional year of observing the transit to determine it.

Scientists believe that TOI 700 e and TOI 700 d are They always face their star on the same side. Such a situation, unfortunately, reduces the likelihood of life there, but does not exclude it. As Dr. Joy Rodriguez of Michigan State University said, “Even with more than 5,000 exoplanets discovered so far, TOI 700 e is a prime example that we still have a lot to learn.” The research has been accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journal Letters.
