Our committee now has enough evidence to answer many of the key questions that Congress initially raised. We have enough information to consider multiple crime reports and recommend a series of legislative proposals to protect ourselves from “another January 6th.” But the main task remains: We need to get sworn testimony from the central participant (in those events, then-editor-in-chief) of President Donald Trump, Republican Committee Vice Chair Liz Cheney said.

As I explained, Trump’s speech is necessary because many of his associates, when asked about their interaction with the former president, cited the Fifth Amendment to the Constitution, which protects witnesses from testifying at their expense.

If Trump appears before the committee, he will not be the first former or current president to testify before a congressional committee. The last person to do so was Bill Clinton.
