Walking Dead Season 3 gets closer by the minute and the shows producer are carefully orchestrating the release of marketing materials to keep the internet buzzing. Today AMC has released a couple of new photos from the third season of Walking Dead which feature the much revered and feared Prison.
EW now only got the new photos they also spoke to Walking Dead Producer Glen Mazzara about the prison and its clear he is very proud of their work on the primary location for Season 3;
“I’m incredibly proud of the prison,” says showrunner Glen Mazzara. “I think our crew has done a great job. It’s a huge sense of scale and magnitude I haven’t seen on any other show as far as construction. What’s important to us is the prison itself is now a character in the show.
It’s a haunted house, it’s scary, it’s frightening, and there are parts of the prison that are always terrifying, that are always inaccessible to our group. It’s not necessarily the blessing that the prison in the comic book turned out to be.”
As ominious as this new prison setting in Walking Dead Season 3 is do not expect complete safety in this super secure facility. Most people who are zombie fans would think just as I do that a prison would be a pretty darn safe place to be during an outbreak but Mazzara points out quite rightly do not be so sure.
Just as a prison can keep zombies out it was also designed to keep the people in it confined. The biggest threats of Season 3 will not just be zombies but also other survivors. Mazzara told The Wrap
The prison itself will be a threatening, malevolent character. It is a challenge to live in the prison. And I think we’ve really been able to get a lot of story out of it. So it will not feel like a safe corner keeping our characters away from central action. It will really play that they are in a shark cage. Life in a prison is life in a shark cage.
We got a very brief look at the prison at the end of the second season of Walking Dead but these new photos show that the prison and getting to it will not be the easiest task.
Walking Dead Season 3 is definitely looking to capitalize on the success of season 2 while introducing new characters and new concepts as it follows the graphic novel created by Robert Kirkman but also deviates from it just enough to keep the show original.
Producer Glen Mazzara has been adamant that they will follow the graphic novels without being afraid to deviate when it makes sense telling The Wrap;
We’re taking the major tentpole characters and storylines from the comics and adapting them to our alternate universe of the TV shows. So it will be just as surprising to comic-book fans as to non-comic-book fans as to how all of it lays out.
Often filmmakers and writers feel the need to explain the origins of their apocalyptic events but the shows producers are once again firm that they have no interest in revealing how the plague happened.
In season 1 of The Walking Dead we saw the CDC working on a cure but at no time did they reveal the outbreak. Mazzara is adamant this will not change saying again to The Wrap quote;
Robert is not interested in proposing a theory of what caused this apocalypse in his work, and that’s something that I think is important for us. It’s about surviving in this world. We’re lucky in the sense that we’re able to draw on a lot of great zombie films. And one of the things we really pride ourselves on is adding to that literature. Adding original bits with zombies that no one has ever seen.
When you look at possible endings, I really am interested in finding new territory and a new type of ending, a surprising ending for this series that no one’s ever done before, that no one’s ever thought of.
Stay tuned for more Walking Dead Season 3 goodies as we get them.
