Top 10 Truly Disturbing Horror Films
I have watched thousands of movies throughout my life and I am one of those folks who enjoys films from every single genre but in particular films that leave their mark on me long after I turn them off.Worth noting I am not a journalist, I am just an average joe who loves film and happens to write about it.
So my views ( bad grammer included ) are very much those of an average film fan just like most of you reading this. That said as much as I am not a writer or critic I do own well over 1,000 horror films and think I know the genre well. Of the films in my collection a few of them are so disturbing that they have stuck with me to this day.
It is also worth noting that I am not a fan of gore and I am not a fan of films like HOSTEL which for me are nothing but torture porn.Gore for the sake of gore does nothing for me but movies with intricate stories and truly disturbing content and messages not only resonate with me but leave me truly terrified. This list is the 10 Most Disturbing films that offer enticing stories, great characters, and most of all a truly terrifying experience.
-
Blindness:
This movie was not only highly disturbing it was a stunningly well done sci-fi experience. Starring Julianne Moore and Mark Ruffalo it tells the story of a world that comes apart as literally everyone goes blind.
As the blindness sickness spreads the blind are isolated into make shift camps to prevent the infection from spreading.
The entire film is well done but the most disturbing moments come towards the middle of the film as the infection spreads and society in the ‘concentration camp’ degenerates and victims turn on victims with vicious results. A shocking and fantastic film which every apocalyptic film fan should see.
-
Jack Ketchum’s The Girl Next Door
: The Girl Next Door is based on a true story and apparently there was another version of the film which starred Ellen Page star of Juno and WHIP IT.
I have no idea who disturbing An American Crime was but Jack Ketchum’s The Girl Next Door was so violent and dark it stayed with me for weeks. The tale of a young girl who is victimized not just by the neighbourhood kids but a brutal woman who lives next door and is filled with hate for her.
The Girl Next Door is graphic and violent but also done within the context of an over arcing and intense story. So where as most films of this nature I would find highly offensive the focus on story telling makes this movie disturbing and emotional and definitely one that will leave you feeling violated.
-
Frontieres:
It seems for a good dark and disturbing horror film you really need to turn to the French these days. They are not afraid at all of crossing the lines of good taste and brutalizing the main characters in their films.
Frontieres tells the story of a brutal gang of bank robbers who go on the run and run into something much worse than them a sadistic and evil family that is pleased to see them.. and make them their new victims.
Very brutal its a far superior film to High Tension both in disturbing content and depth of character. Very disturbing, very believable it stays with you and certainly will have you grimacing in certain scenes.
-
Last House on the Left Remake:
Most remakes are very tame. When Wes Craven’s Last House on the Left came out in the 70’s it was considered one of the most disturbing films of its time.
When I heard that Rogue Pictures was doing a remake I really expected your typical watered down PG-13 remake but this film was anything but. Easily as brutal and violent as the original Last House on the Left is a story of pain and suffering with a final call for vengeance.
Easily one of the more brutal films to come out of mainstream studios in a very long time and one of the few remakes that truly does pay homage to the original. Directed by Dennis Iliadis, he has been tapped to direct the remake of Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds and if he can do the same justice for it as he did for Last House on the Left I am sure we will be terrified!
-
Jack Ketchum’s The Lost:
I have never read a Jack Ketchum book and was not a fan of his before I saw The Girl Next Door but having seen that film I had to see them all. Jack Ketchum’s The Lost also makes my list for the same reasons that The Girl Next Door did it really left a mark.
Where The Girl Next Door left very little to the imagination and actually showed off a lot of its brutality The Lost has the ‘jaws’ effect where a lot of the brutality is implied off-screen which for me made this movie all that more disturbing.
There is a particular scene ripped right from the Manson murders which will surely leave its mark on you. The film tells the story of a psychopathic 20 something who sets out to do what psychotic killers do best. An extremely disturbing tale of young love, murder and brutality.
INSIDE:
I owned Inside for over a year before I finally could muster up the strength to watch it. The film tells the story of a pregnant woman who falls victim to a psycho who wants her baby… whether its ready to come out or not.
I have two children and at the time my youngest was only a month old so I could not stomach the idea of watching this film.
Sufficed to say that when I finally did watch it about a month ago it lived up to what I expected. With the exception of an extremely flawed ending INSIDE is a very disturbing film that lacks the usual clichés in the ‘deranged killer’ genre that has an extremely graphic and brutal ending that much like the films above on this list stayed with me for a long time.
-
TEETH:
This movie unlike the other films on this list was actually quite humorous but its the kind of movie where one moment you are chuckling at the dark humor and the next minute you are groaning. Especially if you are a male.
Teeth tells the story of Vaginal Dentate and I will let you all google that to figure it out but in a nut shell it’s a story of a young teen girl who has teeth where no girl should have teeth and how her simple and domestic life quickly falls apart.
Spiraling out of control her simple suburban life degrades into a story of violence and revenge. Dark and well written its a film you will chuckle at and wince.
-
Hard Candy:
Starring Ellen Page this movie much like The Lost relies on the ‘jaws’ effect for most of its terror but it’s still one of the most disturbing films you can see. It tells the story of a young teen who is befriended by an older man with evil intentions.
Things quickly spiral out of control as the young girl played by Ellen Page decides whether she wants to be the victim or the villain. Intense and dark it’s a great thrill ride that twists and turns throughout leaving you wondering who is going to end up the victim and who will survive.
-
Martyrs:
Martyrs is one of two movies in my entire life that I had to use the fast forward button during. Not because the movie was bad but because the content was so disturbing I literally had to fast forward to keep from being sick.
That being said it is still one of the most intense and intelligent films I have ever seen.
A young girl who was victimized as a youngster sets out with her friend to seek revenge but what starts out as a path of vengeance quickly spirals out of control. A story of vengeance, torture and the human spirit it is easily one of the most disturbing and well done films I have ever seen. Be warned though this will not be an easy one to sit through!
Dead Girl:
Last on my list is Dead Girl but that by no means puts it at the bottom. Dead Girl is a coming of age story about a group of high school boys who discover a woman chained to a bed in an abandoned hospital. What happens next is perverted and vile and sets the course for a confrontation between friends as they try to decide what to do with the ‘Dead Girl’.
Dead girl is extremely hard to watch. It is an intelligent and extremely dark film that is both disturbing and entrancing. I was sent a screener of this movie a year or so before it hit dvd and raved about it and all of my friends who have seen it loved it but agreed it is clearly not for the faint of heart.Having now read my list I encourage you to post your own.
What films scarred you and left you feeling violated while still mesmerizing you with a powerful film making experience?
You fast-forwarded through Martyrs? You have no business writing an article like this.
The atrocious grammar alone dictates that this person had no business writing this article–or anything, for that matter.
you are supposed to be commenting the movie choices! no one gives a crap what “Ashley The Nerd” – with fat meat curtains – thinks. perhaps you should take your stupid comments else where along with your large mouth well you get the point!
nice article awesome choices!
Actually “Hobo”, gauging the intelligence of the reviewer can assist one in the choices they have made. Coming with personal attacks and poor writing ability also leads me to believe that you yourself are one of limited intelligence. So, please from now on when insulting someone please proof read your comment.
I have seen all the movies on this list except “Frontiers”. I found “Blindness” and “Martyrs” to be excellent films. I was not a big fan of “Hard Candy” and “Dead Girl” I just didn’t believe “Hard Candy” at any time. “Dead Girl” I hate to say boring but I was bored. I would have added “Guinea Pig”, “Old Boy” and the original “Dawn of the Dead” but only because I saw it in 1978 as a young boy and back then that was one disturbing movie.
Old Boy’s not a horror film.
Agreed, it was a crime/revenge thriller. I don’t think the three octopi (they had to do three takes) wanted to be in that particular movie. That’s one thing I can’t take. I love the movie (and Park Chan-Wook) and own it, seen it at least 8 times but still have to cover my face for that part. I love South Korean crime/revenge movies, even when they get brutal.
I would argue this point with you. Horror, by definition, is an emotion, and anything that evokes this emotion may be listed as “horror”. Old Boy, most definitely falling into this category, is a disturbing film.
I totally agree. The ending of the film, when the revenge motive and methodology was revealed indeed left me sick with horror at the awesome, immense “horror” of what had been done.
Neither Is Blindness but never the less it was disturbing, as was OldBoy I think it would fit very well into a list of disturbing movies list. As for movies that I found disturbing and Hard to watch.
I found Requiem for a dream very disturbing as well as the Human Centipede
I would recommend everyone to watch “Megan is missing”. It’s not a horror film but it will leave shocked with a very disturbing scene.
True indeed. Blindness had no horror, other than the mass rape scene.
I don’t see what the problem is here besides MoonRaker and Ashley the Cunt being a cunt. I had no problem with the grammar or any trouble reading the article. Maybe Ashley should just learn to read better. Also, Grammatical error on Ashley’s part, the The in her name shouldn’t be capitalized ;p
Heil spellcheck!! *Nazi salute*
Great list though, the only one that really peaks my interest is Martyrs because I almost watched it once before while on a quest for carnage. I’ll have to check into it now since your article has peaked my interest.
“heil – no dictionary results”
I think you mean hail.
*facepalm*
*facepalm*?? what? because she can’t recognize the choice aptness in the German spelling for “hail” in-line with an implied gesture of matching origin – as clearly asterisked – then separates her weak parrotesque rebuttal and equally feeble and incorrect correction with an immodest and condescending line-break? Give me a break!;
I also own a thesaurus.
heil is german hail is frozen snow.
Perhaps it would help if you had looked in a German dictionary, as it is a German word. It does translate to the American English word hail, but nevertheless it is still correct. It is a direct reference to Nazi Germany, and it refers to people who are grammar Nazis.
Heil is German sweetheart.
Heil is German….. Seriously….. WTF is the youth learning about in school these days. Apparently nothing about that horrible time period from 1936 to 1945….
you used the wrong spelling of piqued
not that i disagree with you
It’s piqued, not peaked. No one on this site knows how to write or spell correctly. Pathetic.
When did this become a spelling bee?
You spelt “piques” and “piqued” wrong. *facepalm*
*piques your interest
And the grammar in this article was awful.
My interest peaked about 15 comments ago. *<;-')
Kierin, “Ashley The Nerd” is her name not a description thus if she wants to capitalize the “the” that is totally her choice.
In this thread: lots of keyboard warriors being overly verbose, trying to prove something known only to themselves.
I enjoyed the article; I got what I wanted from it!
Though I must say Hard Candy is the worst film I have ever seen. It stuck with me purely due to the anger that I’d never get those X minutes of my life back.
Agreed. I have only seen a few of these movies but regarding the ones that I have seen, they were all horrible. Especially Hard Candy and Dead Girl.
I have to agree with you Yazi. It’s meant to give an opinion. The reviewer in no way insinuated that they were a professional writer, just a movie lover. People always get so bitchy, maybe trying to prove something, but they always seem to fail.
Not only that, he let people know ahead of time the grammar wasn’t going to be perfect. Sheesh! People always gotta bitch about something. I liked the entire article.
Limited intelligence? Funny, because no one uses that sort of vocabulary arrangement unless they are trying to prove they are better than someone, therefore they would spend the extra minutes to proof read their own reply to make sure they seem to be more upper class than that person such as I am doing to you right now at this current moment in time. So stop trying to impress people who don’t actually care, yes I know shocking, and stop making it seem like grammar and spelling means a person is stupid. This is the internet on a fucking article’s comment list, not a fucking essay in school, grammar and spelling doesn’t effect your education or what grade point average you’re going to get. Thanks for reading my comment and hopefully you stop mocking people for being a normal human being. Goodbye.
I’m not sure what you mean by normal people, Maybe if you only hang around people of limited intelligence, you would not hear the term limited intelligence. I always try to communicate clearly and concisely, I’m sorry if you feel that is me trying to prove I’m better than anyone else rather than me trying to be the best me I can. I believe education and life experiences should be considered, I would not give the opinion of my 4 year old the same credence I would give my 28 year old wife. Maybe you would.
Yet you call yourself DaMan?
You are all annoyingly pompous over horror movies. I know you all want to feel like you mean something in the world but really, these are movies we are talking about.
Have some fun. Who gives a rats ass about her grammar? People are being slaughtered here.
oops I was replying to da man (um really with that name your instructing people on how to write?) Anyway, my bad, I suk.
read your own crap then, stop a
sulting others for their opinions.
*Assaulting.
“Affect”, not “effect”.
ok guy ill give you hard candy wasnt that good, dead girl was alright kinda disturbing for you know F’ing a dead girl over and over again. but then like the other guy said old boy isnt a horror film and the orginal dawn of the dead…the blue faced zombies dont get me wrong i love the movies but i cant be creeped out by a scary version of the blue man group gone crazy. Then you top it off by throwing guinea pig in the mix. i dont know about anyone else but i found about that movie maybe 2004 i think my buddy reallllly hyped it up about 2 years ago i found it on ebay and broght it over my brothers house and a bunch of us watched it. Total fail, i think thats what the kids are saying these days i was so dissapointed i wasnt going give anymore of those films a chance.
its hard to find movies that really disturb you these days, cuz most dont. As horror nerds or fans whatever we have been watching thses movies since we were young. Our minds are warped and mush by now with all the guting, head choping off, raping, bone cracking fun. you want disturbing go watch “jesus camp”, “religulous” ” or “the real world” maybe “the bachelor”.
Oh ya and ashely the nerd if you read this i expect you to find some grammic errors and what not have fun.
I agree with Religious. Bill Maher is a total bonehead idiot. If anyone listens to him and believes what flies out of his useless mouth should have their head examined. Can someone tell me why he is even known to us. Seriously.
You have to see Frontiers. Seriously messed up, seriously.
I actually just finished, that was a disturbing movie. I enjoyed it a little disappointing with the ending but not bad. Thanks for the push to see it.
i agree
Hard Candy is believable if a perv messes w/ the wrong chick could cause him to end up… d*ck-less
You are critical of someone’s writing abilities while posting something full of grammatical errors?
OOooooh, Oldboy was an awesome one, but that’s not really a horror movie, more like a drama/action. And which film from the Guinea Pig series? There were 6 or 7 total. One particularly weird one was about a mermaid with a disease.
The Intelligence and grammar are completely irrelevant to this article. This article is based on a single viewers opinion of what (s)he thinks is good and not. Personal opinions are something one decides by oneself and is not subject to intelligence nor grammar.
You use the commenter’s “personal attacks and poor writing ability” to deduct that he’s of limited intelligence, but you neglect the fact you too attack him/her personally by questioning his/her intelligence and writing ability, leaving yourself in the same spotlight as the commenter you question.
To add to that, your grammar has a few flaws as well. When naming people, places, movies, books or anything else that has a name, one only needs to capitalize the first letter in each segment of the name. Quotation marks are not used for this purpose.
I leave you with the same asshole remark you left Hobo.
“…please from now on when insulting someone please proof read your comment.”
(*Correct use of quotation marks above this line*)
Check out Frontiers, will make you do a double take once things start happening. Very….. psychologically abusive to the victims as well as physically. All I will say is, achilles tendon and a bolt cutter. Not just one, but both tendons. And as he performs the “operation” he explains the origins of how he learned it.
Why are you all making it into a spelling competition are you all that bored lol
Ashley, The writer admitted up front that there were some grammar issues. But, to tell them they had no business writing this, or any article, goes to show that you have no business judging them. Have a nice day!
However, as for the choices of the movies…I’ve not had the stomach to watch horror films. Some scare me about 10 minutes through, while others p*** me off to the point of throwing a large object at the TV. So, I don’t watch horror films…
Few of the comments here have no appreciation for freedom of speech and effort from the person who made these reviews. This is not grammar school. We are talking about horror films. Please learn how to say thank you for the time and effort spent. Get a life
Ashley The Nerd. You certainly give the word nerd a bad name.
agreed. watch shutter!
Will you SHUT UP! Jeepers can you say the same thing time and time again…you’ve actually have no writing or it seems speaking ability. Sorry your bitter…
Really again?!? I’m almost at the point of saying you’re an ideo…I won’t finish because I AM a gentleman
The 35 people who like your same comment on everything are clueless, sorry!
Grumpy people have no business watching horror movies. Joy suckers.
HERE HERE! agreed.
HERE HERE! agreed.
The Hills have Eyes and The Strangers.
The Strangers to me is one of the scariest movie of all time. Something about it… Maybe the thought of someone outside of your house in a creepy mask waiting to kill you… I think that might be it!
I think it’s because it was filmed so well. I loved it as well, It was so full of suspense and wonder. It was more of a piece of are then a Hollywood horror.
..you left out ‘Audition’ .. ‘Oldboy’… and ‘Orphan’ !!!
Audition sucked, I was so dissapointed when I saw it. If you thought Audition was bad watch Imprint ;p Oldboy isn’t horror, but Orphan had to be one of the BEST horror movies I’ve seen in years.
Audition absolutely did not suck. It may have been too slow or nuanced for some viewers, but to say it sucked & then to say Orphan is the best horror movie you’ve seen in years is simply revealing yourself to be a teenage boy or someone who thinks like one.
You’re calling Kierin a “teenage boy or someone who thinks like one.” is rich since you’re flaming him/her for not liking the same movie you do. Who’s the Teenager exactly?
Agree. To each their own. They are movies, and what you say is an opinion NOT A FACT.
I’m surprised Cannibal Holocaust isn’t on this list. Banned in over 30 countries upon its release for the scenes of animal slaughter and the brutal rape scenes.
I’d also say Requiem For a Dream is a one of the most disturbing films ever made. Watching characters self destruct and lose all control is gruelling, and in that vain I’d also say if you wanted to be disturbed watch the French film In My Skin about a woman who develops a self harming addiction. There is a scene in which she is having a business meeting over lunch, and she takes her knife and starts jabbing at the skin on her arm… from there it snowballs into total self sabotage.
Cannibal Holocaust is a good one to add. Salo and Camp 731 are a few others that come to mind when I think of Cannibal Holocaust.
This is a good list of movies, but I really, really think you should read the Bedford Handbook. Your writing is hard to get through with run-on sentences, bad grammar, missing punctuation and plenty of spelling errors. As such of the movies I’m not familiar with I just looked them up on other sites.
Jesus Christ, this is not a freaking English test!!! Can you read the choices? Yes? Good! Then stfu about the freaking grammar!!!
I understand your irritation with the grammar Nazi’s but if the article is so poorly written that multiple people needed to comment maybe just publishing a list would have been better.
The grammar Nazi’s…. what? What belongs to the grammar Nazis and causes irritation?
Please do get of your high horse. Thank you.
OFF. lol.
oops, “Off” lmao. Thank you Pablo 😀
um…”a serbian film”
…you won’t thank me later
I love serbian film!
It really isnt that disturbing
Wow aren’t u dark and disturbing. Only a child or a momma’s basement chronic masturbator would say they love a film in which a child is sodomized.
The Exorcist. And to all the grammar give a fucks-eat it.
Yeah, nothing disturbing about drug fuelled incestuous paedophilia… you sick puppy.
“isn’t that disturbing” :O :O :O :O :O you are one sick fucking puppy man.
It’s pretty bad, but so is “Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”.
3edgy5me
By far this is the most disturbing film ever in history!!!!! I dare anyone to say otherwise!!!!!
“Salò o le 120 giornate di Sodoma”
i dare you
grazie
eeep, are you for real?
eeep, are you for real?
I say otherwise. It’s the most overhyped movie ever. None of the rape happens on camera. I’m not quite sure how people can be so disturbed as to warn people not to watch the movie at all when the scenes people claim to be the most disturbing aren’t even in the film. Hearing a baby cry with the inference that it’s being raped doesn’t really bother me and I don’t know how you can sit through any horror movie at all if it bothers you.
Anything that happens on camera is no worse than any of the saw or hostel films.
You want to see someone in a movie brutally raping a baby? We all know it wouldn’t be a real baby but who in their right mind would want to watch such depravity happen: real or not?
Dude, you don’t NEED to see that shit, C’mon!
there is a version where you see everything you know.
I have the uncut/uncensored version from TPB. Get it from there and sooth your curiosities. You see everything…
It sounds as if you are okay with what happens to the baby. So it is only bad to you if you see every detail? Even the thought of it makes it a truly sick film without having to endure shots of it plastered in my face. Sorry, but Saw or Hostel has anything close to that.
Yes, it does sound like you were watching an edited version.
What truly made Serbian Film so disturbing is the fact that the first third of the film or so (before it spirals into depravity) could have been a great drama on its own. I thought the story of a retired porn star who returns to the business for one last film (even though the deal is too good to be true) in order to care for his family, made for a great set up. So when things go horrifically wrong, you actually care for him and his family.
My friend told me it was pretty bad.. New born porn , I will no watch it, and human centipede one and two
I agree with you that Human Centipede is by far one of the most disturbing and revolting movies of all time. I wonder how much those actors got paid for doing these? I wouldnt do it for a million…
Human Centipede wasn’t disturbing IMO. It was so poorly written and acted my wife and I were very disappointed in the squandered opportunity and potential this story could of had. Disturbing? NO! Lame and a waste of your time? YES!
Seen this… I tell people “A Serbian Film” is something they must NEVER watch, knowing damn well that after saying that they will watch it and want to pull their eyes out lol
Agree!
both a serbian film and salo are extremely disturbing, but are not horror films. The list calls for the most disturbing horror films. Therefore Martyrs is probably the most disturbing horror film i’ve ever seen. Also cannibal holocaust, audition, and pretty much anything else from Takashi Miike.
Audition actually didn’t disturb me as much as Martyrs did. I was less shocked in audition, because the cover of the DVD already told me “this film is gonna go to hell sometime soon”. And I’ve watched a bunch of Miike movies since I was 14 (so only 2 years), but I’ve already come to expect the worst from him. I love his films, but I’m not that surprised when everything goes wrong o=o
Thank you; calling ‘A Serbian Film’ a “horror” movie does a disservice to the genre. It is a very disturbing commentary on what men do for money, but it is not a horror film. ‘Martyrs’, however, gave me nightmares for a few days. That movie is what I would call the best horror film of the last 10 years.
A Serbian Film….is a masterful piece of film making. People often speak of the film in a bad way due to a certain scene, what people fail to realize is that the scene was not graphic in content but was more effective because it was implied as to what was occurring. And in my opinion the director conducted an almost genius move when he decided to shoot that scene because most who see that scene use it as a reference point when speaking about the film. A Serbian Film not only was effective it was well written and lead us to one of the most shocking climatic endings ever. But yes A Serbian Film was disturbing…BUT effective, because it’s a film that once you see it, you’ll NEVER forget it, and those who have never seen it will gather the nerve to see it..someday.
I can’t get that nightmare out of my head, it’s all downhill from there…
Yeah, ‘A Serbian Film’ and ‘Irreversible’.
“I stand alone” (Gasper Noé), is also incredibly disturbing.
How about Battlefield Earth? Haha
Battlefield Earth is quite possibly the most disturbing movie ever only because i have nightmares about how someone was able to make a movie so bad.
You should check out the Film Sack podcast on Itunes. The guys had to actually watch and review Battlefield Earth.
Wait, is I Stand Alone by the same director as Irreversible?
Because if that’s the one about “The Butcher” and then the incest, yeah that was pretty creepy, if only because he knew it was hisdaughter. Then again, after watching VisitorQ and Oldboy, I feel that I Stand Alone could have used incest much better. But that’s just me:/
Yes it is. “Seul Contre Tous” in french. It was Gaspar’s first feature film.
august undergrouds mordum – it will leave you feeling grimy
i couldn’t stand that one, not for the gore or the kiddie rape, but that annoying woman would not stop screaming and cussing throughout the entire movie!
Please proof read your articles more thoroughly before posting. I liked the article and will definitely check out at least a few of these movies, but grammatical errors really make articles like this seem unprofessional.
He stated right at the beginning of the article that he was not a professional, he’s just an average joe writing a post about movies that disturb him…lay off.
The Human centipede?????????????????????
Good one… Human centipede was Awesomely Disgusting!!!
Human Centipede was terrible……..absolutely terrible.
Human Centipede was pretty bad, but I actually had to turn off the sequel because it was too disgusting. I never turn off a film, but this one had to go. Also, I don’t plan to park in a parking garage for a while.
human centipede was not really disturbing. once you get over being ammused by it it is just a bit boring. I love the shot where they are just laying on there side screaming and you can just hear muffled screams. very iconic
They are talking about the second film. It is much less tame than the first.
It’s so brutal.
The second movie was the worst pile of crap I have ever seen. It was just an excuse for the director to flesh out the fantasies he had that he did not get to do in the first film. Nothing but a mess. Trying to make it look artsy while just making me think the director needs therapy.
Then to me you do not like horror films. What wasn’t terrifying about that concept?
Sickest cr*p I’ve ever seen in my life. Now please excuse me as I go to my happy place.
Try Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom its old, but pretty messed up
Salo was awesome even by today’s standards it was f*cked up and still relevant 40 years on!
Oh god Salo… who even came up with that film. I’m tired of bleedin’ rape films.
You have the wrong picture for The Girl Next Door. Two movies were made about the horrific true story of Sylvia Likens. The Ellen Page movie was very well acted, spot on. The second film was over the top with the violence.
The Girl Next Door was actually the closest to the book (the real story) of the two. The Ellen Page version played fast and loose with the facts of the case (e.g. playing the older sister who was the worst abuser as sympathetic).
Ellen Page version was called an American Crime. http://jadedviewer.com/uploaded_images/ellenpage-770695.jpg
I liked your article. However, I have a bit of constructive criticism: your sentences are a little long-winded in my opinion. You should consider getting an editor.
I agree with you on “The Last House on the Left”! I think I was peeking through my fingers the entire time. 😐
Human Centipede 2 was the most gruesome movie ever. The movie itself is not that great but as far as disturbing goes this puts every other movie to shame
How did you manage the sequel? I’m still in therapy for the first. I’m afraid to look up 2. Excuse me while I go pray the rosary now.
If by gruesome you mean terribly acted, filmed, and written then yes it was gruesome. Both movies in this series are complete trash.
Disagree.
totally agree there was so much potential wit.
Agreed complete trash. Concept fucked up and had some potential was made to see the first one and what a let down.
I agree, I have never turned a film off because it was too disgusting, until this one. The first one disturbed for a couple of days, but I still can’t being myself to watch the end of 2.
yea, it really steps on the gas!
I am in love with this comment. So dark. lmao
a Serbian film. babies get raped and shit. most disturbing thing i have ever seen in my entire life. its banned in most countries
Failure to launch ….now thats a film I still have nightmares over
face palm!
Antichrist by Lars Von Triers. That movie made me go crazy for a couple of hours after watching it.
Is it any good though?
Not really. If female genital mutilation is your thing, though (God I hope not) I can’t think of any other movie that made me (a chick) wince and cross my legs. Maybe this is how guys feel watching “Teeth”. The movie itself, though, is completely terrible. Pretentious. I also got the feeling Lars Von Trier (I don’t respect him enough to look up the correct spelling of his last name) has serious, deep-seated issues with women. I ended up more pissed off than disturbed or haunted.
Antichrist is really a good piece of art horror. It affects everyone who sees it in very different ways, but impacts them all a great deal. A female friend was just totally disturbed and wracked by it, and for a couple days, left in s stupor. I was impacted greatly, but not at all in the same way. The name really is misleading though. Couldn’t be more misleading. It’s a heavily psychological thriller art-film really. There is never any involvement with any antichrist that I got out of it. It will either leave you pissed off afterwards, or kind of dumbfounded. But it’s seriously great at causing an effect. Kind of like the band tool, after listening to it, your mood is definitely impacted.
Dumbfounded is a good word, a lot of people will watch this movie and no understand it…and hate it for it which is sad, but that’s what comes with this genre.
I must see these movies…I had nightmares after The Exorcist…the old one…
Half of these movies are nothing but torture porn.
I was just about to most the same thing. Half or more of the movies are indeed ”torture porn”, which is ironic as the reviewer is apparently against torture porn!
I expected films more along the lines of ‘Hour of The Wolf’ or something cerebral. None of these films are, in my opinion, too disturbing because over the top violence isn’t disturbing… just a tad distracting and cheesy.
wow no SAW in this
The list is disturbing movies, not shitty movies
The SAWs were pretty disturbing, but movie snobs don’t like them because they’re popular. But they’ll easily celebrate a movie no one’s heard of.
I didn’t like them because they are just terrible films all around. Popular doesn’t mean “good,” and neither does obscure. Unfortunately, popular often indicates something more easily digested by larger audiences. In general, the masses are easily entertained.
I will admit the first Saw Movie was a great premise and i did not see the end coming they just really went downhill from there though.
I agree with you. I am a horror movie junkie, I love everything from the Saw films, to Antichrist. People think their opinions matter. The fact is, disturbing means a lot of different things, and people are disturbed in different ways. I also stop to think, what if this happened to me. That makes the experience a lot more terrifying and I think maybe wanna be movie critics should do the same, because god knows if they got kidnapped and were sent through a serious of tests that tortured them…they would be shitting their pants.
anyone seen FUNNY GAMES or FUNNY GAMES US?
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119167/
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0808279/
brilliant movies yet somewhat disturbing! Michael Haneke directed them both and they are basically, apart from the actors, identical. Every scene in both films is exactly the same! How cool is that?!
funny games is one of my favourite films ever! very disturbing but humorous at times, and teasing and suspenseful.. a brilliant film
Yeah, that was messed up.
Wrong turn ,Ruins ,Saw nice movie
Ruins was a good flick. As for the SAW films, I don’t like having everything spoon–fed to me. Wrong turn so-so.
A Serbian film is awful, by far the most disturbing film i have ever seen! I spit on your grave 2010 is a good horror!
I Spit On Your Grave, a billion thumbs up. If you can handle graphic rape. The lead Female in that movie does such an amazing job, she blows my mind.
Try “The Children of the Corn”. For some people it’s disturbing, I had a freaking nightmare watching it from near beginning to end! Beware the Evil Amish Children!
creepy little kids!! One time the movie was creepier than the book (huge S.K. fan)
ilsa
well, this is perhaps the most poorly written story in search of a competent editor I’ve ever read. The writing is so bad it prevents the reader from comprehending, or even caring about the points you’re pathetically trying to make.
It didn’t stop you from making stupid and pointless comments though, did it?
Right at the beginning of the article the author states he has bad grammar. Cut him some slack!
Looks like I’ve got a lot of catching up to do. “Hard Candy” and “Teeth” are the only ones I’ve seen (besides “The Last House on the Left” which may be brutal, but was also tasteless.)
im sick of reading through lists of disturbing films for peaodaphiles and pervs and i intend to report them my daughter suffered at the hands of a peado who worked at her nursery sick sick sick
dude shut up
So, why do you read them…?
No High Tension? Shame D: That movie was fucked, and not a bad movie either.
I have a friend that will never ask me for movie recomendations again after I told her to watch Martyrs. She didn’t talk to me for months.
Does IT count? Made for TV minisieries, I know, but still. I don’t watch horror movies, never seen any of these, because I saw IT when I was 10.
I didn’t sleep in my room for a week & a half!! I was young too when I started reading/watching Stephen King. Finished the book…freaked out. Needed to watch the movie, didn’t trust Tim curry for years…Pennywise *shudder*
Scary, but not too disturbing
Human Centipede 2 for sure is by far the sickest movie I have ever seen & I have a depraved mind. Also as far as disgusting human cruelty goes, try I spit on your grave which has a 45 minute rape scene followed by the victims gruesome revenge on the slack jawed hillbillies that attacked her.
x2 on everything you said. Two of the most sickening movies I’ve ever seen.
I Have to laugh at the amount of times you used the term “things spiral out of control” in almost every summary..I will agree with most of this list though I’ve seen a lot of these films and they are indeed very disturbing and kick ass..
Inside made me trhow up a little in my mouth, and have cold sweats..
dude your totally wrong about the girl next door. the brutal woman that hates her and tortured her does not live next door. its her aunt and she lives with her. the aunt has her sons and the neighborhood kids tortured her. the reason its called the girl next door is because its told from the point of view of the boy that lived next door to the girl that got tortured, hence the girl next door. Jesus Christ did you even watch the movie???
As far as Hard Candy goes… I got the distinct impression that Ellen Page’s character had the whole thing planned out. There was no “deciding” whether to be a victim or villain. She knew she was never going to be the victim.
“The Devil’s Rain” has always scared the shit out of me, but hey, we’re all different. I must say that “Serbian Film” is most certainly the most fucked up, disturbing film I’ve ever seen.
Devils Rejects was pretty fucked up…
Anybody seen a little indie horror film called JOSHUA directed by Travis Betz (not to be confused with an ‘evil child’ film of the same name). I find it one of the most disturbing films ever…
What’s more horrific than “the girl next door” is the true story that inspired it. It’s too evil to depict in a movie.
i spit on your grave is similar to last house on the left but better i think
Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer
YES! That movie was ingrained on my retina’s for days afterwards. Totally brutal and very realistic.
A Serbian Film is probably the most extreme twisted disgusting film I’ve ever seen, though it was a well made movie (ie; not your typical brainless ‘torture porn’). I am still reeling from some of the scenes in that one.
excellent list! i plan to watch all of them except the last house… and hard candy. i’ve already seen them. don’t know why you included hard candy… i don’t consider it “disturbing”
Because she/he is a parent. Think about it.
For the most f*%ked up experience you can have, try watching ‘The Magic’ on 13horror.com – takes between 5 – 10 minutes, depending on how fast you read.
Seriously, where is ‘Salo’? Where is ‘A Serbian Film’? Where is ‘August Underground’? Where is ‘The Devils’? Where is ‘The Entity’. Where is ‘Irreversible’? Where is ‘Funny Games’? You don’t watch many films, do you?
I was going to say serbian film too, are the others good?
I was going to say serbian film too, are the others good?
Funny Games had zero impact on me – I thought the whole thing was juvenile and silly, and so obviously trying sooo hard to be edgy and smart (villain talking to camera anyone?). Also a distinct lack of any kind of humour. I have to concur with Salo (couldn’t sit through most of it) and A Serbian Film though.
I don’t know if I would include The Entity, but I think this is more along the lines of what I would consider “disturbing”. I also thought Mean Creek and River’s Edge were disturbing films as well. Though I would probably have to defend my stance on horror, again.
“Funny Games” had me right up to the scene in the boat….then it got all weird
american crime was REALLY dark, i haven’t seen girl next door.
I spit on your grave was pretty sick too!
wat about “Salo”
??
“The Descent” left it’s mark on me first when they showed the accident that killed the main character’s husband and daughter and then towards the end when she imagines celebrating her daughter’s birthday with her.
“The Last Supper” also left it’s mark on me as a group of friends invite one extremist after another to dinner and kill each one in turn thinking that they had done the world a favor. They then “plant” their victims in the backyard and grow tomato plants in the upraised soil. The best tomatoes ever grown! The ending has a bit of poetic justice that will have you wondering “what if….”
“Rest Stop” is freaky as heck and once you’ve seen it you will never stop at one of those places alone again. It was bad enough watching the victims be terrorized by the insane killer at the deserted rest area, but the moments that stuck with me the most were the spirits of the girls who had been previously killed reaching out for help as if they still believed they were alive.
“Wrong Turn: The Beginning” will stick in your mind for a very long time and have you fearing blind lines that can decapitate, being sliced & diced and kept alive as the pieces of your body are cooked and eaten in front of you, other such things that will make your skin crawl and your mind wondering what you would do in such situations.
So, so, so many movies, yet so little room and so little time! I know there are a billion of us who have been impacted differently by various horror movies. Remain afraid!
Probably should put that these are more spoilers then reviews.
None of the aforementioned ‘videos’ are movies at all. They are pure violent pornography made to demoralize woman, injure children, and satiate ill-minded pedophiles who have nothing better to do to entertain themselves. Shame on all of you! It sickens me to know that people like you are ‘out there’ searching for more disgusting horror on film. Find something more philanthropic to do with your time please, or go crawl back under your rock and stay there. Also, for you who are interested, I am an English professor at a university. I am appalled by the fact that all you seem to care about is the grammatical prowess of the reviewer. Have you no idea how idiotic you sound to ‘normal’ readers in the world who happen upon this hideous page? God help us all!
You have no right at ALL to say that these are not movies. They are acted, scripted, thought out, and directed. By professionals who work their ass off to get to where they are and to make these films. Just because YOUR mind doesn’t work the same way as theirs doesn’t mean it’s wrong. Hundreds of people were involved in making EACH FILM. They all saw a reason for creating what they did, who knows what it was. There are some pretty messed up books out there too, that a lot of people try to get banned which I also don’t agree with for the same reason.
IT IS ART, IT IS OPINION – you have no right to judge. Go hump the bible some more 😉
You sir, are the one who sounds idiotic. And does claiming (anonymously on the internet) that you are an English Professor at a University somehow make you more qualified to judge? I thinkee not.
Oh and if you don’t like these types of websites, don’t read them.
Trash Humpers anyone?
Sick Girl stuck with me for months. There is one specific scene where the couple tied up in the barn are finally dealt with. That’s the scene. Those few minutes f’ed me up.
Off course Blindness was a great movie, its premise it’s based upon the homonymous novel written by portuguese author Jose Saramago; one of the greatest.
human centipede
i spit on your grace
maybe disturbing but i have only ever heard of one of those films. just too hipster for me.
do people seriously care about grammar?
are people honestly that anal about something someone made you do when you were very little? (I’m talking about school. not serbian flim)
I am definitely going to have to check all of these out! Thanks for sharing!
I spit on your grave …… that was pretty insane to me..
Megan Is Missing was pretty messed up.
You sir, are the one who MUST be the idiot to assume that I am a male. Probably due to the fact that I am an English Prof. and I am perusing a disgustingly sexist web-site. I am only browsing because of my inner concern for my two daughters who might want to watch one of these sick movies one day, or who might fall upon this site and begin to read…
and form an opinion of their own….which they should be allowed to do.
Can we draw a distinct line between disturbing “torture porn” and everything else? I for one, love horror movies, but I seriously can’t stand the visceral horror angle *those* movies take. I like being scared, not queasy.
The Divide. Well made and extremely disturbing.
How could you not include irreversible? Probably one of the most disturbing movies I’ve ever seen! http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0290673/
Enter the Void
Open Water affected me the way you describe because of the age of my son at the time. that poor baby left alone on that boat!
Pause!
I agree with ilango that Battlefield Earth was one of the most disturbing films of all time.
I do have to say, who gives a crap if the grammar was poorly put together, the guy wrote a list with good explanations of the movies he felt were among the top 10 most disturbing horror films. Then asked for your list, don’t attack someone else’s lists. I wouldn’t dare watch a quarter of these movies any of you have listed, because such graphic horror movies have no point but to satisfy a disgusting need so many have. This list interested me because I was curious to see what movies someone lists as the top 10 most disturbing films.Psychological thrillers are great, but gore porn, as majority of these movies listed are, those are just a plain waste of time. Hard Candy was a good psychological thriller without any gore, that was the beauty of it. It made people cringe by the thought of what was happening when there was nothing actually happening. That is a good horror movie. Watching someones head be put into a microwave or watching people as their raped is pathetic and disgusting and you should be ashamed by enjoying those types of films. Now, let the comment bashing resume.
Agreee times a thousand. Hard Candy was wicked, I see so many people bashing it here, saying it wasn’t scary at all. Um, what?? How is the situation in that movie not terrifying and disgusting on many levels. Then they post that Antichrist is better/actually a horror, and I didn’t find it scary at all. It was filmed amazing and I appreciate it for that reason alone. Also like to take note how many times A Serbian Film has been brought up…that’s just fucked. I can’t believe so many people have even seen that film.
Dead Girl is trash!!!
I am amazed that nobody mentioned ANTICHRIST. Don’t you guys think that it was a pretty disturbing movie too and yet cinematic-ally great.
“a serbian film” raped my soul…very well acted movie…the stuff they made this guy do is sickening…i am forever changed from watching it
Err, one question – why no “Mary Poppins”?
grammer… lol.. whatta retard
‘Sufficed to say’ … jesus how does the world crap out people as stupid as this
your list sucks.. just quit.. my mom can make a better list. wow.. watch some movies son!
Sorry, this list is pretty much void because it’s missing ‘A Serbian Film’.
“Yellow brick road” I laid awake for weeks thinking about the nature of evil. To be fair I watched that and “Red State” back to back that evening. Lol
I loved Red State!
I sat there in awe of Kevin Smith, which I love. While I was humored by the WBC style of the people, I thought it was really well done.
Yellow Brick Road is one of my favorites. Totally twisted, I get something different from it every time I watch it with someone else. I am downloading Red State as we speak
Eden Lake it’s pretty amazing as is The Descent
Agree to both. Super wicked films.
haha seriously people stop bashing this writer for his spelling or grammar or whatever.
mastering a language to where one can communicate decently displays some intelligence – spending time mastering it further shows/proves you have not been intelligent enough to realize that true intelligence is shown in other areas than the study of language. Attempting to be derogatory based on spelling or grammar just highlights that the individual behind the pun is NOT intelligent, simply because he has not realized that no matter how good you are at words it has come through hard work (or thesaurus) and not intelligence. hard work which has been wasted learning (or rather remembering) something “extra” in a field which is completely void past the point where you can communicate normally.
In the real world the most intelligent and innovative people study things that branch out from mathematics – incl. raw mathematics, engineering, economy, physics, chemistry etc etc. You will rarely find them boasting their english skillz anywhere since – rly – who the fack cares about it, and what is the chance that you will find someone who can grasp what you are talking about anyways if you attempt to communicate things that are relevant to your own field ( not counting language ofc 😀 ) .
I have intentionally not capitalized or reread this, because i hope that if you are intelligent you will understand this even with grammatical errors. /rant over
Dead Girl? I work at a dvd store and I’ve never even had the slightest urge to rent it, from what I can gather from customers (none of them have recommended it) it’s a movie about a bunch of guys who find a zombie, have sex with it then decide to pimp the zombie out&kidnap other girls for it to bite so the have more against-their-will prostitute zombies. Am I right?
anyone see the remake of i spit on your grave epic!
Dead girl wasn’t so bad. That being said, it was one of the best “zombie movies” I have ever seen.
Hey “DaMan”, how about you proof your comment before attacking others? If you’re so intelligent you should be able to spot the clear grammatical error in yours.
Sickest movie I ever saw was “The Serbian Movie” – and I did fast forward through most of that, that is just not ‘entertainment’.
T.F. Mou’s ‘Black Sun: The Nanking Massacre”….Own an autographed DVD of it and yet have only managed to get through it once
Nacho Cerda’s ‘Death Trilogy’, specifically Aftermath, Genesis I found more sad than disturbing, in a quasi-Twilight Zone way
As for Miike, I’ll throw ‘Visitor Q” out there as being pretty disturbing
‘Boy Meets Girl’
‘Haute Tension’ NOT the American recut they called ‘High Tension’
‘Calvaire’ (maybe more male-disturbing ala ‘Teeth’ than disturbing in general)
‘Subconscious Cruelty’, ‘Cutting Moments’ and ‘Divided By Zero’
‘Combat Shock’
In their own way, the ‘Guinea Pig’ deserve at least a mention here LOL
Good list.
I havent even read the article, but love the war in the comments section!… epic! … lol!
Sadly I dont think this guy has ever seen a Serbian Film. I have seen most of these and still nothing comes close to that.
The Poughkeepsie Tapes! I’ve never had a film that bothered me as much as this one did. The way his victim acted in the end is what did it.
Does anyone know where i could watch these movies?
First and last time on this site… because i think i’ve had more sex than all of yal combined. . . yeah i said “yal” =]
Agreed. The list is solid. Martyrs goes way beyond torture. Torture is only a tool to reach a higher objective… Actually, its real purpose is deciphered in the very last seconds of the movie, in the words of the infamous old lady (you know, this statement about men not being sensitive enough…). Its extreme sadism, not limited to torturing. Otherwise, I would have added “Inside” and “The Human Centipede” (1 & 2, but mostly the first one) top off the list.
Seriously? Most of these movies just put me to sleep…check out “Beloved” or “Sodom” or “Slaughtered vomit dolls”…even Antichrist made these films seem like G rated movies.
I Spit on Your Grave (the remake) was incredibly disturbing and I still can’t get most of the death scenes out of my head. Am still a little afraid to watch the original. As for the Last House on the Left, I hated it. The rape scene made me lose interest, and as for *SPOILER* killing the last bad guy with the microwave? It was just so stupid that I can’t bring myself to like it.
from this list i’ve only watched teeth, and it wasnt that disturbing. wasnt that horrifying, just the novelty of a movie about vagina dentata.
Rather than
disturbing, many of these films are actually more offensive, than anything
else. This isn’t to say I was personally offended – but the intention is clear.
Shock the audience, twist the knife. Here is a breakdown, in my opinion, of
headliners in more specific categories;
Most Offensive
Film: “A Serbian Film”. It’s not a good film, but I don’t believe it
missed anything which could be conceived as offensive or bad taste. I mean, my
personal opinion was a list was written of awful things which could be in a
film and then they wrote a loose story around it. I’m no prude and I’m still
surprised when presented with the script anyone even wanted to be involved,
cast, crew, and publishers – even the catering team who got a film credit. I
certainly wouldn’t have wanted my company involved.
Most
Disgusting Film: “August Underground – Mordum”. Although there are
many ‘super-gore’ films such as “Tokyo Gore Police”, AU-M is actually
‘disgusting’. Live vomiting, sweaty, dirty, infectious looking filth. Terribly
boring unless you get off on this kind of thing.
Most
Depraved Film: “Dead Girl”. Once again, open to interpretation. As
are all films. Personally I see this as a sordid little masturbatory aid. I
have a lot of respect for women and have no trouble getting women so the
concept of ‘interacting with a dying female body’ is a little lost on me. The
story and interaction between characters is actually quite good and some genuinely
intense scenes.
Most
Shocking Film: “Martyrs”. Not the most violent or gory as such – but
for cold, hard knocks it’s stand-out. Again, maybe it’s interpretation – I
struggle with female battery – but the sound used, the bluntness of scenes –
it’s a very stark, clinically brutal film.
Most
Artistic Horror Film: “Antichrist”. Believe me in no way is that
title a compliment. This film was just terrible. I find it remarkable how
people continue to battle for deeper meanings and artistic merit in films which
are nothing more than an assembly of shocking scene with little purpose. It’s
my opinion, which you may feel is wrong, but I just found the whole thing
tiresome, predictable and pointless. It’s literally only notorious for the
“erect penis in shower scene with penetration”. Without that, it
would have faded to history with all the other art house porno.
Most Obscure
Film: “Gozu”. It’s been a while since I last saw this but as far as I
can remember it’s fairly obscure with some strange scene. If I remember the
ending correctly – it’s, obscure. It’s worth a watch, I remember being hooked.
Most ‘Splattertastic’
Film: “Tokyo Gore Police”. I have to add this, with the novelty title, because
it’s just bonkers. Its good fun, don’t take it seriously and it’ll keep you saying
“Oh f*ck, what next?!” followed by a laugh. So much gooey, tendon strew, blood
soaked gore. Everything some giant fleshy penis canon’s to half beautiful
strippers half crocodile women.
Sorry about the spacing of the sections above. I have no control over that, it’s doing it automatically.
I was a horror lover until recently. Just hate the cookie cutter movies, gore for no reason, no plot twists. I would classify these as thrillers, or perhaps suspense gore (if that could be named that). I have to say The Exorcist scared me to death. Growing up Catholic I had a fear from the start. My mom wouldn’t allow it in the house so I rented it. I still will not watch it, just can’t do it. Once was plenty enough for me. Before that, “IT” because I have a fear of clowns & just finished reading the book. I will say in regards to the Saw argument, I wound up watching (because nothing was on) the first one. While I wasn’t scared I found it interesting. At least it held my attention. I don’t run out & go see them but I do like to give a movie an honest chance. The thing about horror is there is no clear cut requirements like documentaries, comedy, romance. Plus it is all based on you the person. You might be scared of Paranormal Activity…I think it’s beyond stupid. You may have been able to watch IT, I had nightmares for weeks! Saying someone is an idiot because their fears or disturbances don’t match your own is rather closed minded. Just my opinion.
Jmercier7 it’s “you’re bitter”, not “your bitter” #just sayin
Why do we horror film addicts always have to be so angry?? LOL! I think the choices are pretty good (especially if we take time to emmerse ourselves in the concepts), but regardless, what about the crazy idea that we just see if there are any films that we haven’t seen and decide if we want to see them? Weird. I know.
Kind of ironic in a funny way!!
I will say, I have only seen “Last House on the Left” & some of these look pretty interesting. I will be checking out some of them
I agree Steve, what a bunch of fun crushers.
Twilight.
Most disturbing I’ve watched are A Serbian Film, Salo, Cannibal Holocaust, August Underground’s trilogy, and the Slaughtered Vomit trilogy.
Oh yeah, another sick one, Chaos. That was a nice one hehehe
A Serbian Film, and Human centipede (especially no. 2), and Irreversible are the only films I have seen that have made me feel physically ill. and even though it’s not a horror, Bad Boy Bubby sure is messed up, but funny as hehe.
obvious feeling on watching horrible movies are defined as terrifying, thrilling. It could be shown mostly as urgent moments. As example on above, blindness is clearly showing its. The movie that i impressed is called ” Deranged”. Which is Korean movie. I recommend to cause of similarity with blindness.
Good list indeed. Agree with Martyrs and Inside. Still want to see Frontiers. The French sure knows how to stick it to you. Cannibal Holocaust left an impression – sure, it’s low-budget and cheesy in a way and I deplore the killing of real animals by the filmmakers, but the film was well-done for its genre and the killings really were realistic and well-done. Kairo (Pulse), Japanese movie by kiyoshi Kurosawa (fave director) also really disturbed me and left me depressed as hell. Brilliant horror movie though, one of the best. No gore, but scary as all hell and some really dark, depressing concepts. I’ve heard of some disturbing stuff like Salo or A Serbian Film, but I think I’ll avoid them. What I’ve gleaned from the coverage, these films crossed the line (C’mon, there must be a line) Raping babies? Uh, no thanks.
Also, Michael Haneke’s Funny Games (original). Wow, it left me gazing at the screen stunned into zombie-like immobility while the end credits rolled. Not only disturbing in content (a young boy is mercilessly dispatched and the whole film just stops for a while as if it itself is in deep shock) but disturbing in how it implicates us, the viewers, for watching these depraved things. Why do we do it?, Michael Haneke asks. Where does this Schadenfraude comes from?
These games were definitely not funny.
Also, Audition by Takashi Miike. It’ll put you off dating FOREVER! Kiri, kiri, kiri!
I felt the need to hug a teddy bear after watching this nightmare from hell.
Meghan is Missing… O_O The beginning is pretty boring and you hate all the characters, but the ending is intense. I’ll admit I’m pretty faint of heart, but if that movie doesn’t leave you feeling perverted for just watching, you’ve either watched real snuff films or you’re a psychopath. Incredible themes, and even after how scarred it left me, it will definitely be in my bag of tricks should my children someday act like Meghan.
The human centipede. I got absolutely nothing out of watching that movie. No entertainment, it’s just a screwed up movie. I’m a 16 year old boy btw, not some middle aged Mum. I’d never recommend it to anyone, but that’s one disturbing film.
frontiers was awesome. better than hostel for sure.
why isnt a serbian film on here???
Lets hope the writer never watches V/H/S if he finds Martyrs had to be fast forwarded. These movies were good but I didn’t think they were that disturbing. I can think of better.
Nice call on Inside. I was going to be upset if that wasn’t on this list. Halfway through the movie you think it can’t possibly push the envelope any further. Then it does. Again. And again.
Yea to the non-paid critics…Kill yourself HA
TEETH: ”
Vaginal Dentate” should be “Vagina Dentata.” Don’t put up a post without making sure that you’re actually using a term, used in the movie, correctly. “Vaginal Dentate” makes me think of a Dental Dam. Vagina Dentata makes me think of a vagina with TEETH.
umm what about a serbian film? worst wretched movie ever
While A Serbian Film is quite graphic, I have to say I was somewhat disappointed. I think it was built up too much before I watched it. I was expecting more. It is very well done however, which was a pleasant surprise.
That’s not a horror film.
A Serbian film was soooo ridiculously over the top that I couldn’t really even find it scary or disturbing.
it was like a stupid porn with a bad storyline
I loved the new Last House on the Left <3 I enjoyed the 70's version, and really thought I would be disappointed [SPOILERS] by the fact that they let the character of Mari survive in the remake.. But it turned out to be incredible! They kept enough of the original story to satisfy me while also adding some truly awesome brutal scenes, such as Krug getting his head blown off in a microwave! xD I will agree with the writer of this article on this film being disturbing, just because of the head in the microwave.. That's just insanely disturbing. (:
Teeth wasn't disturbing =p I don't know… Maybe I'm a weirdo… But even though I enjoyed the film for it's originality I really don't think I would call it disturbing. Unless you're a male… Then it might freak you out a lot…And also I kinda liked Hard Candy. It took me three or four times to make it through, but there was something irresistible about the twist of the young girl turning on the older predator of a man. The ONLY reason she would call it disturbing is because the guy gets castrated =p I've got at least 5 movies in which men get castrated… Actually, all the ones I've commented on it this post have castration involved! Not the remake of Last House on the Left, but the 70's original 😉
Sorry, I love horror movies and had to put my take in. The only one I really agree with is Last House on the Left =p
Pan’s Labyrynth
@d462d89b2c502c5ed3b01991fe327a23:disqus Oh my god get over yourself. why can’t you just read the article and and go on to the next one like most people. who gives a fuck? well i guess obviously you do but there isn’t much i can do about that. i know your type. the sarcastic arrogant asshole type that says shit like “i’m just trying to be the best me that i can be.” even though its in written text i can still see you’re trying to be an asshole and use a condescending tone. you shouldn’t think so highly of yourself. i hope one of these days someone knocks you down a few pegs so you can see yourself as a person and not the god you seem to think you are. you should try getting off your high horse more often that way you can realize your not actually on a higher level than everyone else. try not being such a dick, then maybe more people could stand being around you and you wouldn’t be such an annoying bore
you’re welcome 😉
thank you, i am going to watch them.
I’ve seen the Last House on the Left remake, I can definitely say it deserves to be on this list, it disturbed me so much I could hardly watch the whole thing, and that never happens when I watch creepy movies!
mine is see no evil it is disgustin he kills his own mother and he pops eyeballs out and collects everything ewww gross and i cried coz the best person in it tried to save someone else and died
ummm, i wonder if “toofunny” realizes that he’s a critic for calling the person who wrote this article a critic. irony?
I’ll probably get laughed at, but “Event Horizon” disturbed me more than any other movie. The idea of a hell dimension is horrifying to me. Nice to see someone mention “In My Skin”. I own it–the French know how to do horror. Also “The Piano Teacher”–it’s a drama, but makes you sad in a way few other movies can. Salo was interesting, but the Fascism element is often overlooked, as is the fact that Passolini was murdered shortly after making the film, possibly FOR making the film.
Surprised to see no mention of “Men Behind the Sun”. I don’t think I can ever bring myself to watch that.
Also if we want to get a little more obscure “Little Otik”, “Cannibal”, “Repulsion”, “The Tenet”.
“Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer” deserves a mention too.
Furthermore, if we want to talk about just plain disturbing “Happiness” and “Sweet Movie” deserve to be mentioned.
Loving your suggestions!
You want disturbing? Try watching “Red, White and Blue”. Starts off as a really odd character study of some small-town lower middle class rednecks and veers into something so dark and violent that I almost couldn’t watch it…and I’ve been doing horror for five decades, so I’ve seen it all. The very last shot of the movie is a stunner, well worth a rental.
I found this to be a great, and very well written article. I don’t know what all you guys have a problem with…
Really nice selection. I agree that some of these are really disturbing. I had to fast-forward on Martyrs, too. Thanks for the reviews and don’t mind the “purists”. This is your page and us, the viewers should be thankful rather than checking your spelling and grammar. Be grateful folks, life is too short to be condescending of others. Be thankful for what is freely given. – M. Hauptman. Cardiff, Wales
I really liked Hostel 2, the Theater Bizarre and both Human Centipede movies.
Out of all of these I would have say “Dead Girl is the only one that is Truly Disturbing.
Martyrs was in no way intelligent, it was torture porn at it’s finest with an ending so ridiculous it tricks you into thinking it actually makes sense. Hard Candy was hardly disturbing especially when you bump the likes of A Serbian Film from the list which is possibly one of the most disturbing movies EVER… Don’t even let me start on some of the Japanese classic horrors. I vote to rename the list to ’10 Truly Disturbing Horror Films’ as it’s far from the Top of lot.
The Divide
Want to watch a disturbing movie? Watch “Salo, or The 120 Days of Sodom.”
Irreversible was hugely disturbing.
a serbian film was trying so hard to be disturbing, that it became ridiculous. throwing every sexual perversion and taboo into a pot and mixing it does not make a disturbing film…
I -LOVED- Hard Candy. So much so that I scared a few guy friends by saying I had no problems with doing exactly that should they be stupid.
you forgot “HIGH TENSION” a french horror movie from 2003
Definitely a good list. I have watched all of the movies and I concur with the selection. True, Martyrs and Frontieres are top choices, they definitely fit the definition of “excellent movies that nobody can possibly love”. I would possibly have added “The Devil’s Rejects” to this list, although it is slighlty off-centered, topic-wise. A “Serbian Movie” would belong to the list too.
Thank you for coming up with these great reviews. I enjoyed reading.
And what about Funny games?? It’s like Hard Candy…
Irreversible (2002)– You mentioned the French do not seem to have any boundaries when it comes to creating truly disturbing cinema. This movie has stayed with me, and I watched it months ago. It has two famous scenes (one with a fire extinguisher and one with a rape) that will be indelibly etched into your mind.
the collector was the best movie i had seen in awhile. it truely had me guessing to the end. then when i got to the end i was shocked! can’t wait for the next 1
not too much longer now
somebody has apparently not seen The Human Centipede
Martyrs was only good for the first 30 minutes or so. After that it bombed big time.
High Tension was better.
“Blindness” is about politics, its “horror factor” is not more disturbing than a flu-documentary from the discovery channel, better read the novel or go find a real disturbing film.
this is bullshit
This entire list was written by a woman wasn’t it??? I’m not a womanizer or anything like that, but i don’t believe he/she hasn’t seen enough horror to compile a list of this subject. What about “Seed” or the already mentioned “Serbian Film”? I do agree w/ “Teeth” as any male who’s seen the film will attest to. That shit’s just wrong
Seed did have 1 scene that I still remember, but it was a long time ago so it might not be 100% accurate **Death Scene Spoiler** A guy was tied to a chair and the main “villian” was bashing his face with a hammer **End Spoiler** I thought that scene was very well made
cool man! loved the vids you picked
all my faves!! but you left out, I saw the devil
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1588170/
Strange List, some good and interesting choices but some pretty poor ones as well…
the girl next door was FUCKED…..UP
saw it and felt horrible for weeks
My most disturbing movie was Cannabal Holocaust, which was like watching a snuff film, especially the senseless killing of animals, which HAD to be real, and one of the reasons it was banned. Made no sense, not scary, just made me nauseous.
Unfortunately, yes, the animal killings in Cannibal holocaust were real. From wikipedia :”Many of the censorship issues with Cannibal Holocaust concern the on-screen killings of animals, which remains a major issue today. Deodato himself has condemned his past actions,[9] saying “I was stupid to introduce animals.”[37] Seven animals were killed during the film’s production, six of which are seen on screen:[1]
A coatimundi (mistaken as a muskrat in the film) is killed with a knife.A large turtle is captured in the water and dragged to shore, where it is then decapitated and its limbs, shell, and entrails are removed. The actors proceed to cook and eat the turtle.A large spider is killed with a machete.A snake is killed with a machete.A squirrel monkey has the top of its skull chopped off with a machete.A pig is kicked twice and then shot in the head with a shotgun at close range.”
I rather liked Deadgirl, I find most horror movies have disappointing endings, at least for me, and i loved Deadgirl’s ending, because its predicated on the fact that the protagonist didnt learn his lesson, or rather, in a sick sort of way, he DID. Also loved Hard Candy, now my favorite Ellen Paige movie, mostly because I’ve always wanted to see her play a psychopath, and she did so very well.
If The Girl Next Door is an alternate version of An American Crime then it is in fact based on the true story of the torture and death of a young teen, Sylvia Likens. Highly emotional to watch when you realize that most of what is showed in American Crime actually happened in real life.
You should start watching Korean horror movies like I saw the Devil and Bedevilled.
An American Crime was a very disturbing movie because it is based on a true crime story. The Girl next door is a knockoff of that movie and less disturbing to me because it veers away from the true story line created in the actual crime committed.
Glad you included Martyrs on the list – One of the most disturbing films I’ve seen.
Ju On 2
Session 9
I hate to be that guy, but the phrase is ‘vagina dentata’. I don’t know where you got ‘vaginal dentate’ from.
If you’re in the mood for a great foreign film, there’s an awesome Korean film called “Old Boy”. It’s a story of loss, revenge, and a very interesting story. I can’t say anymore about this movie without revealing the REAL story going on (because that’s the whole mystery behind it), but when I took this movie to work a co-worker asked to borrow it, and then another, and then another, each one ranting and raving about how crazy and amazing the movie was! Needless to say, I didn’t get my DVD back for a whole month with it constantly being borrowed!! Definitely check this one out if you like action, gore, and an amazing story too!
Teeth was a horrible movie…in general and as a horror. just not scary and yes for males it was rather eerie to watch however i did not enjoy this film and it should not be on a list of top movies.
also movies are not disturbing if they leave the “jaw” effect…yes my imagination can take me place far beyond, but thats not why im watching the movie. im supposed to be disturbed, not disturb myself
FUNNY GAMES is not in this list? Damn.
After reading American Psycho, watching A Serbian Film was like watching the Care Bears.
You guys should check Antichrist. That is some sick film.
Due to this topic already being subjective, my views may differ. Anyway, this is just another list of Disturbance. That’s all.
10.) Human Centipede 2: Full Sequence.
09.) Cannibal Holocaust (based on true events)
08.) Saw (Original)
07.) Halloween II (Rob Zombie version)
06.) Ichi the Killer (Japanese Horror)
05.) Horseman (Australian movie)
04.):Tetsuo: The Iron Man
03.) Eraserhead (David Lynch film)
02.) [REC] (Spanish horror)
01.) Audition.(Japanese horror)
High Tension. It was originally French, but it is one of the best dubbed movies I have ever had the pleasure AND displeasure of watching! It’s quiet disturbing, but also beautiful in it’s own sick and demented way. You should definitely give it a try.
Teeth is one film that i have been wanting to see forever!!!! but i havent seen anything about it. That’d b a good movie to watch with someone holding you…
Most disturbing for me has to be either Happiness or Requiem for a Dream.
Totally agree with The Girl Next Door. That movie left me feeling incredibly…..icky, for lack of a better word. I can’t believe things like that actually happen.
Thanks for the list. I have one question; you mentioned “Martyrs is one of two movies in my entire life that I had to use the fast forward button during” – so what was the other one?
“Jack Ketchum’s The Girl Next Door” is based on the horrific murder of Sylvia Likens… The movie is far more tame in relation to what really happened to her; it was horrifying. Probably the most extreme torture since the Inquisition – that poor, poor girl. Look up her name in Google…
Deadgirl sounds intriguing. I am definitely going to check that one out. A great list, by the way. I’m a fan of the horror genre and it’s not all about spooks and scares. Aside from what goes bump in the night, a film that can incorporate moral and ethical views INTELLIGENTLY can really be frieghtening.
Martyrs!, Freaking disturbing film. Will never look at orphanages the same way
Good list. “Martyrs” is among the most brutal movies I’ve ever seen, and it’s not only disturbing, but excelent. “A Serbian Film” is even more brutal as other commenters correctly say, although for me it’s still below the first 15 minutes of “Irreversible” and the turtle scene in “Cannibal Holocaust”.
two movies that creeped me out were “BLUE VELVET” and “BUG” i two absolutely outstanding examples of what could actually happen when a person with serious mental issues self medicates with the wrong stuff, staring two great actors too
THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE
I agree Hard Candy is disturbing especially for a guy, but on the other hand the situation is quite different from “evil person inflicts horrible suffering”, as in most of these. I also think it was a good movie. My nominee for the list “Sick Girl”. In addition to the story as disturbing, I think a plus for it is the actress nailed the personality of a socio or psychopathic person as they really are, not always as movies portray them. Of course many such people are not even criminals, let alone what she does.
blindless is written by José Saramago, portuguese literature nobel price winner 1997. 😀
Lars Von Trier’s Antichrist.
the ending of Martyrs still creeps me out to this day. I haven’t been able to watch it again. I could stand Inside a bit more the second time around just because I was able to laugh at the absurdity. Great list.
Without a doubt or second thought-A Serbian Film. That film is probably the sickest, nastiest film that anyone will see…
1 thing I will say about A Serbian Film is that a lot of it was literally “lost in translation”
I’ve only seen a couple of these and will have to check them out. Two of the most disturbing movies I have ever seen are “Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer” and “Jacob”s Ladder”. The first had a really bad scene where they are video taping themselves killing and raping a women when her son walks in and once he realizes what is happening tries to run away but it caught before he can make it to the door. That scene stayed with me for years. Javob’s Ladder was more mainsteam and a great story, but some of the scenes, especially his hallucinations in a Brooklyn VA hospital are disturbing. I had to warn my room-mate at the time whenever I planned to watch it as she refused to be in the house when I did.
HUMAN CENTAPEDE
What about 8MM? Though not a “horror” movie, it was very disturbing.
I knew this would be a pretty accurate list when I saw the picture from the movie Martyrs on the link and on the first page. Martyrs still haunts me today both terrifyingly and intellectually.
If you actually just watch Hostel you’ll realise that Eli Roth is highlighting societies morbid fascination with death, terror and ”torture porn” as you call it for no other reason that power, money and entertainment. Alot of people heard people complain about it being just another meaningless gory film but I for one loved seeing someone do something in the backpacker genre. And as Eli Roth says in the making of the film, ”If you dont believe things like this are actually happening in the world, you are very, very wrong.”
check out the new film ‘Chained’. Vincent D’Onofrio is radical in it.
Wow … I just watched Blindness and I have to say that it’s a beautiful movie. It has absolutely everything love, betrayal, heartache, fear, and hope. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a movie that can show the true nature of humanity at it’s worst and at it’s finest. I highly recommend this movie.
Come on ppl…. August underground trilogy?
What about the August underground films??
I have never seen them. I hear they have no merits and gore for the sake of gore is just not my thing.
What films scarred you and left you feeling violated every steven speilberg film
lol
“Seven” the scene with gluttony especially…
So the Girl Next Door ISN’T torture porn to you?
For me its not because its a true story wrapped in a very dark disturbing story. its as much about the story as the brutal moments.
Gotta agree with you about Dead Girl. It was a good movie but damn was it disgusting and disturbing. It was also quite sad.
What about Man Bites Dog? I found that movie to be one of the most disturbing films I’ve ever seen. Because of the cavalier attitude of the lead role that prevails throughout, and the sense of doubt that it is “just a film” that seriously starts to hit you about two thirds of the way in, this movie will stick with me (and many others I know who have watched it) for years to come.
I do appreciate this list since I haven’t seen most of the films on it and I’m always looking for “disturbing” content to peruse. I also like all the suggestions given by the commenter’s although I’ve seen a lot of those films and do not find many of them all that disturbing even though they routinely land on “Most Disturbing” lists.
Blindness comes from a Book by José Saramago. The book is always better than the movie and this one is really worth-reading. I highly recomend it.
A serbian film is so over rated. Yeah it’s pretty gross, but the story is actually fantastic, and you don’t get bored with it.
As for Salo (120 days of sodom), if you enjoy your disturbing movies, this is totally for you. Truly shocking.
And also, Men behind the sun is pretty messed up.
You want “disturbing” movies? Watch anything from Michael Haneke, then you´ll know what this word really means.
To all the grammar Nazis out there who want to pick on the writer of the article (and so many of us posters also) because of his self proclaimed terrible grammar, as well as his admitted absence of writing qualifications, I say “FUCK STRAIGHT OFF!! Better luck passing your English class next semester you fucking losers. I truly hope you never make enough money to pay off your student loans and eventually go mad and kill yourself in ‘Grand Headline Fashion’ as a result of realizing that that alone will be the only way you will ever do anything good for humanity or society at large.” To the rest of you I say watch Man Bites Dog because of the way it kind of leaves you wondering if it’s just a film or if it’s real. I found it to be a film that will stick with you long after you watch it.
The ending to Inside sucked.
Visitor Q – Not a horror, but pretty horrific.
Have seen it ….sounds like the Sylvia Likens story.
Truly a nasty and vile true story.
Clive Barker’s “Dread” was a good one. Dark and disturbing (probably not on the same level as the ones in this list but still very much worth a watch.)
They sound so disturbingly good I wont see any. Well, except for Teeth. Been wanting to see that one since the trailer came out in 07, and Hard Candy I had already seen. I love that movie. But yeah, everything else I won’t see.I get nightmares so easily. So not cool.
The Human Centipede made me want to vomit my guts out, and It might be just me but I think Wrong Turn and The Hills have eyes are both utterly stomach churning.
o.O the fact that the person writing this found Hard Candy to be one of the most disturbing films, should be a sign to us all that they have no idea what they are talking about. Hard Candy is a great movie, well acted and well done, but to stay it is “disturbing” is a far, far stretch. Also TLHOTL remake, beautifully done remake but not all that disturbing. More or less, just a perfectly done horror movie. This person’s level of disturbing is pathetic and whimpy at best. Calling Hostel “torture porn”- obviously they missed the basic part of what made Hostel disturbing and terribly brilliant… the fact that yes, it COULD happen. Worst yet, it probably does.
I agree. Not many of these films are “disturbing.”
The Exorcist was the most disturbing film I’ve ever seen and I only saw the watered down version on regular TV. I can’t bring myself to watch the one that is uncut. I would never be able to sleep alone again!
Inland Empire, anyone?
“What films scarred you and left you feeling violated while still mesmerizing you with a powerful film making experience?”
The Wedding Planner, 27 Dresses, Monster-in-Law. All extremely frightening scenarios dealing with the worst thing that can happen to a man. These films and others like it are also typically told from the point of view not of the victim, but the villain, giving you a first-hand look into the mind of the deranged.
A Serbian Film was LAME.
If you really want dsturbing, watch Visitor Q. or “Salò o le 120 giornate di Sodoma”
Top two disturbing films in my book right there
blindness sucked… and was worse the second time around.
Gaspars Noé’s masterpieace “Irreversible”…
Maybe that rape scene will pleasure that sick little wannabe psychopath giggles who dosent bother babys being raped just after being concived because it’s just on film but hey, who am i to judge… but sorry giggles it’s no baby being raped as you like it, it’s Monica Bellucci and that is more epiclly disturbing! .gone
based on “Ensayo sobre la ceguera” a novel by Saramago, great book and very well made movie!
On “blindness”
“A House of a Thousand Corpses” …. the bad guys… the torture, their
behavior. It stayed with me…. not the best horror flix but for a
movie to replay in your mind. The movie is over and you still think
about certain scenes. Not all horror movies can do that. “The
Exorcist” too.
“The Girl Next Door” is horribly inaccurate to what the true story of Sylvia Likens. “An American Crime” is far more accurate and as a viewer, for me that is disturbing knowing how close that version is to the actual events.

There’s a little novel titled The Hurricane Party written by Chuck Morgue. If this were ever made into a movie, it would go on this pretty fast. Go read it, and just remember “eye socket” that’s all I will say LOL
Good list. Missing one of course, A Serbian Film
I Spit on Your Grave (1978) or Cannibal Holocaust
Dead Girl is ‘disturbing’? It’s just perverts fucking a corpse girl that moves. Depraved sure. Disturbing? Read a book for something truly disturbing.
The Poughkeepsie Tapes, I don’t know if you’d class it as a horror, or what, but that scared the shit out of me, knowing that it happened, and knowing that the murderer/kidnapper is still alive and out there.

Anyone labeling ‘A Serbian Film’ as a “horror” film is incorrect, and it does a disservice to the genre. It is social commentary disguised as a film with increasingly disturbing and depraved elements, but it is not a “horror” movie. “Martyrs” and “Inside” are disturbing horror films that will cause lack of sleep in most sane adults. I have seen every movie on this list and I could not agree more with each every position. Good job!
The Girl Next Door, Irreversible, The Last House on the Left (remake), regarding sexual assaults. Those films just sickened me, I still have nightmares about the rapes. The Saw films are pretty disturbing too.
THERE IS NO MOVIE WHO CAN BEAT BATMAN………………..
I have only seen a couple of these (I keep putting off Martyrs because of what I have heard). Dead Girl was definitely not disturbing (IMO of course). I gave that one a 4 on IMDb because it was so dull. One I found disturbing was “Megan is Missing.” The only movie I couldn’t finish due to the “final 22 minutes.” To each their own though
Eden Lake……that was one disturbing movie
I think, for me, it would have to be Human Centipede 2. That movie fu*ked me up
Antichrist, Life and death of a porno band, A Serbian Film, Irreversible
Loved the list and need to add The Lost & Dead Girl to my list. While I find Martyr’s to be the most vicious movie I’ve ever watched, I’d have to say Old Boy stayed with me longer than any movie. I know it’s not a horror movie, but neither is Blindness. MY list for just plain disturbing would have to include Wolf Creek. The final few minutes is awful to watch and the grittiness of he filming made it horrible. One could debate the horror merits, but the final ten minutes of Antichrist is horrific in ways I never thought imaginable in a mainnstream movie. Stayed with me for days
i think the horror movie MAMA deserves to be on this list because OH BOY !! that movie was disturbing and yet we do not see any blood !!
Don’t forget popular movies too. Maybe not disturbing throughout but who could forget the ending of “The Mist”. Who could say they didn’t view swimming in the ocean a little different after seeing “Jaws”?
I thought pretty much everything about Teeth stunk out loud, with the exception of the song over the credits, Chuck Prophet’s “You Did.” So, tho I hate the movie itself (maybe you have to be male to find it disturbing), I’ll be forever grateful to it for introducing me to the terrific & offbeat music of Chuck Prophet. Ya sometimes find gold nuggets in the weirdest piles of sewage….
Nothing. The french society simply isn’t muzzled by the uptight catholic moralists who are way too powerful in America.
Sorry, but I’m just finding the poor writing, grammar and punctuation too much to get over. I’d like to continue reading it, but I just can’t do it.
Hard Candy is amazing–extremely disturbing, and perfectly showcasing Ellen Page’s huge talent. Speaking of Ellen Page, An American Crime, which you mention in your description of The Girl Next Door, is also awesome. That it’s based on a true story (and having researched the true story itself, it appears the movie is spot-on) is mind-blowing enough, but Catherine Keener plays “coo-coo for cocoa puffs” extremely well, and Ellen Page is 100% convincing as her victim. A must-watch–you won’t be disappointed.
I would add The Strangers to this list–the final line from one of the killers is particularly chilling . . .
Says he has no admiration for gore-porn, yet praises films like “Dead Girl”? Word of truth: framing an intelligent story around useless sickness and evil does not make a piece of art.
LOVE french horror films!! Must see it. High Tension scared the ever loving crap out of me lol.
But…the REMAKE of Last House On The Left??? It doesn’t even hold a candle to the original, IMO. Brutal and intense, yes. But simply not as disturbing and effed up as the original.
You certainly missed “A Serbian Film”. Probably one of the most disturbing movie i have ever seen.
Watch “Haute tension” (High Tension), another French horror movie. It’s in my top five all time…
U people crack me up, with ur condescending arrogant responses. Who gives a s**t if someone messed up their spelling, or didn’t use BIG words? R u not smart enough to get the point? Who r u trying to impress? In my opinion, which at least I understand is minuscule, ur losers for taking this so seriously. I was bored, so I actually read some of the comments, n I was reminded y I usually skip them. Using big words, n criticizing other people’s faults by mocking them show just how pathetic u r. True, this is a stage for opinions, but some of u take it to another level. Get a life, or better yet, become professors of language arts, n stop trying to mock others on comment sections. Sad! move outta ur moms homes, n get jobs, ya bums. By the way, I have a phd in SYKALOGEE, so I don’t have to prove nutin, or SPELL nutin right….. Losers!!!
Hostel is the only movie that I have seen that has truly disturbed me to t one.he point that I will not and can not watch again. I couldn’t even make it through the second one.
